LOSS 10-22
The final make up of the NRL Premierships top eight will be decided next Friday night when the Rabbitohs take on the Knights, after the Rabbitohs fell to the Brisbane Broncos 22 points to 10 at Suncorp Stadium this afternoon (Sunday). 40,094 supporters saw the Broncos score four tries to two, in a match that did not reach any great heights with the loss not affecting the Rabbitohs ability to finish in the top eight at the completion of the regular season. The Rabbitohs remain in ninth position on the ladder on for-and-against behind the Knights, their opponents in next Friday nights blockbuster match-up in Newcastle. The Broncos cannot finish anywhere other than third position. The Rabbitohs got away to a terrific start when rookie fullback James Roberts scored in the second minute of play. From a repeat set of six, the Rabbitohs swung the ball to the right through halfback Chris Sandow, with Roberts using his speed to get outside of Broncos number seven Peter Wallace. Sandow converted to give the red and greens an early six-nil lead. The Broncos were denied a try by the video referee four minutes later, and had to wait until the 14th minute to post their first points through Alex Glenn. Glenn scored a soft try, piercing the Rabbitohs defence from close range. Corey Parker converted to lock up the scores at six-all. The Rabbitohs line was under attack for a 15 minute period in the middle of the first half, but they held strong until the 28th minute when Brisbane centre Jack Reed out-leapt his opponents to score. Parker converted to give the home side a six point advantage. South Sydney countered immediately with Chris McQueen scoring in the 29th minute of play. Sandow was involved twice as he put on a run-around play with Nathan Peats, throwing the long ball to McQueen who fought off four defenders to score in the corner, reducing the deficit to two points. The Broncos scored once more before the break when Sam Thaiday scored in the right hand corner after the video referee checked an obstruction by centre Ben Teo. Parker converted to give the home side an eight-point break at the end of the first half. The Broncos seemed to have dominated possession and field position in the first forty minutes, with the Rabbitohs handing the ball over too often to mount consistent pressure. And that story continued in the second half. The Rabbitohs had a chance to score through Issac Luke in the 49th minute but replays showed he got a slight touch to a bomb that allowed the video referee to rule a knock on. Rabbitohs centre Greg Inglis went down with an injury in the 55th minute of play. Inglis looked to have hurt his ankle and will be assessed in the lead up to the Knights match. Four minutes later the Broncos scored where Inglis would have been defending, when Ben Teo split two Rabbitohs defenders to score. Parker missed the conversion attempt, giving the Broncos a 22-10 lead. Over the final 20 minutes of play, the Broncos played fairly composed football, with the Rabbitohs chancing their arm to try and peg back the Broncos lead. Both sides were making handling errors and the game seemed to coast along to the full time siren. The Rabbitohs had one last chance to score in the 75th minute when captain Michael Crocker was brought down short of the line, and the Broncos were denied a try in the final minute after Reed knocked on in the air from cross field bomb. The loss has not affected the Rabbitohs ability to make the top eight this season. The Rabbitohs need to defeat the Newcastle Knights on Friday night at Ausgrid Stadium at 7:35pm to secure a spot in the top eight. The Bulldogs could also snatch a spot in the top eight, but would need to overcome a massive deficit in their for-and-against to jump either the Rabbitohs or the Knights.
