Late Changes

There was a late re-schuffle of the team. King replaced Corrigan in the center, and Talanoa came in on the wing. Geddes started at prop, with Sam Burgess dropping back to second row. Corrigan and Pettybourne started on the bench. Clark and Areaiiti dropped off the bench.

LOSS 10-24

The South Sydney Rabbitohs turned in a whole-hearted 80 minute performance at AAMI Park tonight (Sunday), but the Melbourne Storm were too good, winning 24 points to 10 in front of 15,872 Members and supporters. The scores were locked at 10-all at half time, but the old firm of Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater came to the fore in the second half to seal the win for the home side. The Storm shot out to a 10-nil lead after 16 minutes through tries to Dane Nielsen and Matt Duffie. Both tries came from errors by the Rabbitohs, putting themselves under pressure. The Rabbitohs struck back in the 29th minute when Chris McQueen scored the first of the Rabbitohs’ two tries. Issac Luke had just entered the field of play and it paid dividends. Sam Burgess made one of his trademark strong charges towards the line, offloading to Luke who shot the ball out to Dave Taylor. Taylor found Greg Inglis who saw space in front of McQueen, passing wide for McQueen to score. Three minutes later and the Rabbitohs continued to roll forward with Sam Burgess crossing for a four-pointer. Dave Tyrrell took the hard hit up, felled just metres short of the line. Issac Luke went left from dummy half, then turned the ball back inside to a rampaging Burgess who hit-and-spun to go over under the posts. Adam Reynolds converted to take the scores to 10-all. The Rabbitohs were holding on for dear life in the first 30 minutes, with errors at key times proving the difference between the teams. Once the Rabbitohs got some good ball in the final ten minutes of the half they were able to mount some pressure which led to points. Sam Burgess continued where he left off in the first round, turning in a big first 40 minutes. Issac Luke certainly raised the tempo when he came on and gave the Rabbitohs some strike around the rucks. The Rabbitohs controlled the ball well in the first 40 minutes, completing 17 of 19 sets-of-six. The opening 20 minutes of the second half were very tight and very tough. Reynolds went off in the 48th minute with what looked like a bad knee injury, but he came back on, only to see Dave Taylor leave the field five minutes later. Fetuli Talanoa was denied a try in the 49th minute when he was just pushed into touch in the act of scoring a try in the right hand corner. Billy Slater was able to go one better than Talanoa in the 58th minute, keeping his toes inside the touch line to score his first try, with Smith’s sideline conversion giving the home side a six-point advantage. The Rabbitohs muscled up and started to dish out some heavy defence, in particular one crunching hit from Burgess on Bryan Norrie which started to raise the tensions between the two sets of forwards. Six minutes later and Nielsen scored again giving the Storm a healthy 10-point lead with 15 minutes to play. The Rabbitohs threw everything they had at the Storm, getting some much needed field position and a few opportunities to threaten the Storm line. The Rabbitohs could not get across the goal line, with a final try to Slater in the 80th minute extending the final score line to 24 points to 10. The game was much closer than the final 14-point margin. The Rabbitohs played controlled and calculated football with Issac Luke really adding some spark around the rucks. Burgess was particularly strong in both attack and defence and was rewarded with a try. Greg Inglis was dangerous every time he saw the ball, making a long break with some of his individual brilliance in the second half, giving the Rabbitohs the field position to mount an attacking charge.
