WIN 20-10
A courageous and defensively-solid South Sydney Rabbitohs line up scored their best win of the 2012 season to date, running out 20 points to 10 winners over the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at home at ANZ Stadium this afternoon (Friday). The Rabbitohs scored three tries to two in front of 35,221 Members and supporters, including a double to rookie winger Andrew Everingham, who has now racked up six tries in his first four games of his NRL career. Both sides threw everything at each other over the open exchanges of the match, with some bell-ringing defense sounding out around ANZ Stadium. However it was the Bulldogs that were the first to score when the ball was swung quickly to the right, with winger Steve Turner touching down in the corner. The Rabbitohs struck back seven minutes later when centre Matt King scored his first try in South Sydney colours. Adam Reynolds kicked a cross field bomb, finding no one with the ball bouncing towards the sideline. Everingham, with his boots just centimetres inside the touch line, flicked the ball back inside to King who ran around and scored close to the posts. Reynolds converted to give the home side a two point lead. The Bulldogs snatched the lead back in the 21st minutes when lock David Stagg dived over adjacent to the posts, with Turner's conversion restoring the 'Dogs four point advantage. The Rabbitohs fought back in the 38th of the half, when it was that man Everingham scoring his first try of the afternoon. It was another cross field bomb from Reynolds that again found the deck, hitting legs and ending up in the in-goal for Everingham to score. Reynolds converted to give the Rabbitohs a two-point lead at the break, 12-10. The Rabbitohs finished the half strongly, especially with the dominance the Bulldogs seemed to have early in the game. Josh Morris was particularly strong in the centres for the Bulldogs but the Rabbitohs did very well to end up in front at the half. Rabbitohs fullback Greg Inglis came into his own in the second half, and it started in the 45th minute when he took a bouncing ball in-goal and spin out of a number of tackles to get the Rabbitohs out of trouble. In the same set Michael Ennis caught Adam Reynolds with a high shot which was put on report, and from ensuing set Everingham scored his second try. Again it was an Adam Reynolds cross field kick that found an airborne Everingham who has now scored six tries in his first four NRL matches. Reynolds' conversion gave the Rabbitohs an 18-10 lead plus an enormous amount of confidence going into the final 30 minutes of the match. The Rabbitohs were taking control with their defense, strangling the Bulldogs out of the game, and some amazing efforts such as Inglis' 75 metre charge in the 56th minute from his own in-goal, and the Rabbitohs' stoic defensive display on their own line for at least ten minutes in the final quarter, help grow Suth Sydney's confidence as the clock ticked down. The Rabbitohs repelled wave after wave of Bulldogs attack on their line, and when the Rabbitohs finally got some ball they marched down the other end of the field and knocked over a 79th minute penalty goal to seal their third win of the season. Rabbitohs Head Coach Michael Maguire described the win as a courageous effort, and no one could doubt that.

WIN 26-24
Pollard and Place dropped off the bench. In the Toyota Cup game, the South Sydney Rabbitohs held off a fast finishing Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs to take out a tight 26 points to 24 victory at ANZ Stadium today (Friday). In an often spiteful affair, the Rabbitohs shot out to a 22-6 lead, then 26-12 midway through the second half, only to see the big Bulldogs pack mount a solid comeback. With ten minutes to go the Rabbitohs led by two points, and held on to that lead to register the two competition points.

NSW Cup Round 6
v Manly-Warringah, North Sydney Oval

WIN 26-18
Late changes, Vale, Hunt and Sue Paoe were out. Hawkins moved to fullback. Hyde started at 5/8. Clinton Sills started on the wing. Eddie Ah Kee and Sukkar added to the bench. The Bears got off to a dream start at North Sydney Oval when Manly fullback Scott Blanch fumbled the ball from the kick off. From the ensuing set the Bears spread the ball left and captain Bennett Leslie found himself some room and charged over the line. Replacement fullback Jack Hawkins converted from the sideline. It was a sign of things to come as the Bears attacked Manly down the middle and a slick offload to Nathan Peats almost resulted in another try but Peats was tackled close to the line. Manly’s first possession inside the Bears 20 almost led to a try but a miraculous intercept by McKinnon, after he attempted a tackle in the build up, snuffed out the attack. The Bears attacked Manly’s right side defence again which resulted in a great individual try to hooker Brendan McKinnon. 20 metres out Mckinnon shaped to pass and then put in a grubber kick which he chased and grounded the ball to give Hawkins another tough conversion attempt, which he narrowly missed. Manly again found themselves inside the Bears half with repeat sets but Fetuli Talanoa pulled off a great try saver to deny the Sea Eagles their first points. The Bears strong defence in their own half lifted the team and Peats again found himself in open territory with another bust down the middle of the opposition’s defence, two quick offloads found replacement Greg Nichols and he carried three defenders over the line to score under the sticks. Hawkins converted and made it 16 – 0. The Bears continued to defend resolutely but after another repeat set inside their own half, Manly finally capatalised as Gary Riccardi dummied and stepped inside to place the ball down under the posts. Blanch converted to make it 16-6 late in the first half. Manly finished the half strongly and almost came up with another try but Talanoa again saved his team with an intercept when the Sea Eagles seemed destined to score. In the dying minutes of the first half the Bears exposed Manly down the middle of the ruck yet again as winger Curtis Johnston showed great speed after a quick play the ball by George Burgess. The Bears were inside Manly’s 20 metres and Ryan Carr read the numbers and shifted the ball to the right and quick hands led to a deserved try to Fatuli Talanoa. At half time the teams went into the sheds with score at 20-6 to the impressive North Sydney Bears. The Bears started the second half the way they finished the first, with Hawkins throwing a cut out ball to Johnston in the corner only for the ball to be ruled forward by referee Jon Stone. Bears replacement Elias Sukkar made an immediate impact, running over the top of two Manly defenders with his first charge, including the big George Rose. Sukkar then touched down under the posts after halfback Carr again focused on Manly’s right side defence before the ball went back down the middle for big Elias to score. With the score at 26-6, errors started to creep into the Bears game. A crossfield kick led to a try to Manly centre Rhys Wollaghan which was converted by Blanch. A drop ball by Burgess gave Manly good field position and George Rose cut through the black and red defensive wall to let Manly back in the game at 26-18. Burgess was then sent off with 5 minutes remaining for a late hit on Manly kicker Ben Falcone that the referee deemed high. Manly needed to score immediately but the Bears defended their line stubbornly with 12 men, to give the Bears a determined win over their rival Manly. North Sydney coach Wayne Lambkin highlighted the defensive effort of his team and was pleased that they backed up their performance of last weeks big win. Wayne conceded that the team made a few errors in the second half after an impressive first half display and highlighted the performance of Nathan Peats, George Burgess and Fetuli Talanoa. After this great win over arch rivals Manly the Bears push themselves up too equal first on the VB NSW Cup ladder. George Burgess put on report for a lifting tackle. George Burgess then sent off in the 77 min for attacking the kicker with a raised elbow. He will miss 2 matches.
