LOSS 22-44

The South Sydney Rabbitohs will need to improve their defence markedly before round eight of the competition, going down to the New Zealand Warriors 44 points to 22 at Mt Smart Stadium in front of a crowd of 15,378. The Warriors scored eight tries to four on home turf, and despite Dave Taylor and Andrew Everingham scoring doubles, the Warriors found some defensive lapses in the Rabbitohs' line, particularly on the left hand side, to register a solid win at their home ground. The Rabbitohs opened the scoring in the fourth minute when second rower Taylor pounced on a pin-point grubber kick by halfback Adam Reynolds. Reynolds converted to establish a six-nil lead. It did not take long for the Warriors to level the scores, with Lewis Brown scoring in the ninth minute after a bomb was put down close to the Rabbitohs' line. James Maloney converted to level the scores at six-all. The Warriors scored again four minutes later when Jerome Ropati collected a Shaun Johnson grubber kick behind the line to score. Tries to Bill Tupou and Simon Mannering in the 23rd and 33rd minutes respectively set up a healthy 20-6 lead for the home side, with Nathan Friend, Johnson and Maloney controlling the game. The Rabbitohs countered with a try to winger Andrew Everingham in the 37th minute. It was the rookie combination of Reynolds and Everingham striking again, Reynolds dropping in another accurate grubber for Everingham to scoot through and score. Reynolds converted to take the scores to 20-12 in favour of the Warriors at half time. The Warriors dominated field position and possession in the opening 40 minutes and it was showing on the scoreboard. When the Rabbitohs had some quality field position they were troubling the Warriors and posting points. Replacement debutant front rower Neccrom Areaiiti had his first touch of the ball in the 48th minute, and the Rabbitohs scored a couple of minutes later. In the 50th minute, Taylor scored his second try following a 60 metre bust made by Issac Luke and Greg Inglis. The Rabbitohs received a penalty and worked the ball close to the line through centre Matt King. Inglis moved into dummy half and popped a short ball to a steaming Taylor who scored his second try for the afternoon. Reynolds converted to reduce the deficit to just four points. The Rabbitohs were playing patient football and it seemed to be paying dividends. Luke was starting to run from dummy half and was making some good metres and creating opportunities for his outside backs. The momentum looked like it was starting to turn but the Warriors' captain Simon Mannering put a stop to that in the 55th minute when he scored his second try for the afternoon. Four minutes later Ben Henry would cross and the ensuing conversions gave the Warriors a 16-point lead with 20 minutes to go. Everingham pegged four points back in the 65th minute when he scored his second try for the game and his eighth try in the first five NRL games of his career. It was Taylor who set this one up, taking the ball to the line and attracting four defenders before offloading to Everingham who scored. Reynolds converted to take the scores to 32-22. The Rabbitohs were throwing everything they could at the Warriors but the New Zealanders held strong. Ukuma Ta'ai scored for the Warriors in the 71st minute after a miracle offload from Russell Packer, and the Warriors sealed the win with a try to Krisnan Inu in the 78th minute after some neat footwork from Johnson. The Rabbitohs struggled defensively at stages during the game, particularly on the left hand side. Matt King was strong in defence on the right, but the Warriors were able to find the gaps they sought through their right side attack and some raids up the middle. Everingham has continued his meteoric rise with another try-scoring double today, and Dave Taylor caused problems when running hard on the right edge. Issac Luke looked his usual dangerous self when he ran the ball and Greg Inglis was able to find some room to move in the second half.

NYC U20 Round 7

v Warriors

Sun Apr 1, 11:45am(NZT)

LOSS 14-48

Late changes Toleafoa started with Artemi starting on th bench. Garlick dropped off the bench.rrrrr A stunning opening 30 minutes has set up the round seven win for the New Zealand Warriors over the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Mt Smart Stadium today (Sunday), with the Warriors running out 48 points to 14 winners. The Warriors led 24-nil after just 29 minutes, setting up the win over the visitors from Redfern. Two tries to Ngari Laumape and further four-pointers to Omar Slaimankhel, Mason Lino and Ngataua Hukatau set up the unassailable lead in the opening half hour. The Rabbitohs decided to play a more structured style with quality ball movement and it paid dividends over the final ten minutes of the half, with winger Nick Hedley scoring from a Luke keary cross-field grubber kick in the 36th minute, followed by a try to winger David Sisifa in the opposite corner three minutes later, taking the scores to 24-8 at the half time break. South Sydney was first to score in the second half with backrower Adrian Ha'angana bumping out of five tackles to score in the 44th minute. Apisai Koroisau converted to reduce the deficit to ten points. The Rabbitohs held the Warriors at bay for the next 15 minutes, but the final 20 minutes was all about the Warriors. Three tries to Siliva Havili in a 15 minute period, and a second try to Slaimankhel, put the final nails in the coffin and the Warriors ran out 48 points to 14 victors on home soil. Blake Matthews was strong for the Rabbitohs at five-eighth and Luke Keary put on some quality plays once his forward pack started moving forward. Poor handling and bad reads and efforts in defence hurt the Rabbitohs, particularly in the first half, with the men from South Sydney not able to peg back the big lead established by the Warriors in the first 40 minutes. When the Rabbitohs played more structured football with quality ball movement they troubled the Warriors, but it was too few and far between over the 80 minutes.

NSW Cup Round 7

v Wentworthville, North Sydney Oval

Sun Apr 15, 3:00pm

LOSS 22-40

Late changes. Johnston, Starling were late withdrawals. Hawkins started on the wing, Hyde at five-eigth. Vaiga and Matapuku were starting props, Nichols second row with Sua Poe starting on the bench. Aki dropped off the bench. It was a tough day at North Sydney Oval for the depleted Bears when they lined up against Wentworthville on Sunday. Missing regulars George Burgess, Josh Starling, Curtis Johnstone and Justin Hunt, the Bears were in for a hard afternoon against a side with vast NRL experience including Luke Burt, Shane Shackleton, Ryan Morgan, Jordan Atkins and Taulima Tautai. Norths started well enough with Ryan Carr’s kicking game earning repeat sets early and his passing was looking dangerous as he sent Bears forwards into holes. Winger Clinton Sills fumbled the ball out of bounds from a 40-20 attempt from Luke Burt. However, Wentworthville wasted their opportunity as the ball was turned over on the first play. A dropped ball from a Jake Mullaney bomb gave the away side the perfect chance to get on the scoreboard with a scrum 10 metres out. The opportunity wasn’t wasted this time as Mullaney crossed over from dummy half. Shane Shackleton looked dangerous with every run and charged through the Bears defensive line after yet another repeat set inside the Bears 20 metres. North Sydney continued to make simple errors inside their own half and gifted Wentworthville great field position which they took advantage of as winger Dylon Gilbert scored on the end of a set play from the scrum. Burt was left with a tough attempt on the sideline but converted to make it 18 – 0 after 28 minutes. Norths winger Sills pulled of a spectacular try saving tackle on Troy Savage and regained possession to keep from Wentworthville from blowing out the scoreline before halftime. It was then Carr’s turn to pull off a spectacular trysaving tackle to keep Norths in the game. North Sydney suffered another setback in the 35th minute when big Elias Sukkar limped off with a calf injury. Greg Nichols, who was elevated from the bench to start, finally got Norths on the board after a rare attacking chance inside the Wentworthville 20 metres to make the score 18 – 6. Norths created an overlap on the right and Brock Molan put through Nichols through a gap to score a much needed try before the break. Any hopes that were raised from Nichols’ try before halftime were quickly extinguished when Luke Burt raced away after a break down the middle of the park, shortly after the break. Norths again gave Wentworthville possession in good field position and they made the most of it as Ryan Morgan raced 30 metres to score on the back of yet another set play from the scrum. Clinton Sills crossed in the corner after some good build up by the impressive Greg Nichols to give the Bears some hope of a comeback at 28 – 10. Jack Hawkins looked to have North Sydney back in the game but was somehow held up over the line by winger come prop Tautai, after beating fullback Burt. Any hope of a comeback looked to be dashed when Wentworthville crossed the line after yet another try from a set play from the scrum. This time it was Troy Savage who crossed in the corner to take advantage of another turnover from the Bears. Jordan Atkins then broke away down the sideline to put replacement hooker Lancen Judo under the sticks, Burt converted to make the score 40 – 10. Norths never gave up and kept playing until the final whistle and Joey Matapuka was rewarded for a strong game after Peats got out of dummy half and sent the backrower over the tryline. Nichols bagged a double after good ball movement inside the Bears half. Winger Sills broke down the left and got the ball to Kieran Vale who threw a beautiful one handed flick pass to send Nichols into space and crossed over to bring some respectability to the scoreline. The match erupted in the final few minutes. As Luke Burt limped off the field, the scrum exploded with a flurry of punches from front rowers Shackleton and Leo Vaiga as they came together at the scrum. Both players were sin binned and ground staff had to get in between the players on the sideline to defuse the incident from escalating. It was a wild end to a frustrating day for the Bears as they finished the match 40-22. Coach Wayne Lambkin thought it was a game that Norths could have won but at times throughout the match, the team went away from the gamplan; “We didn’t make the most of our opportunities and didn’t punish their errors”. Lambkin highlighted Brock Molan’s disallowed try as a turning point for Norths, and Greg Nichols performance in a beaten side. When asked how the side will turn things around in time before next week’s game at Henson Park against the Western Suburbs Magpies, Captain Bennett Leslie responded, “We need to focus on what we done wrong today and get those things right for the next game”.

NSW Cup Round 8

v Western Suburbs, Henson Park

Sat Apr 21, 12:45pm

WIN 52-6

There were a volume of late changes. In the backs Vale and Sills dropped out of the team. Nathan Merritt started fullback and Nichols moved to the wing. In the Forwards Matapuku and McKinnon dropped to the bench. Areaiiti started at prop, Peats started at hooker, McQueen and Ha'angana were starting second rowers and Molan started lock. On the bench Luke Keary was added and Vaiga, Hawkins, Hyde and Wilson dropped off. South Sydney star Nathan Merritt has made a successful return from injury, scoring a try in North Sydney's 52-6 NSW Cup win over Western Suburbs. South Sydney mystery man Nathan Merritt admits he is unlikely to reclaim his No.1 jersey this season, despite scoring a try in a successful return from a toe injury for Rabbitohs feeder team North Sydney in the NSW Cup on Saturday. Merritt, who hasn't played since injuring his toe in the Indigenous All Stars game in February, said he felt ready to return to the NRL against North Queensland next weekend. The prolific tryscorer looked confident at Henson Park, lining up at fullback in North Sydney's 52-6 mauling of Western Suburbs with Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire, captain Michael Crocker and forward Jason Clark watching on from the stands. In Merritt's absence Test and Queensland star Greg Inglis has shifted to fullback for South Sydney and enjoyed immediate success in the role. As a result, Merritt admits he will find it hard to slot into his favoured No.1 jersey, and may have to revert to the wing where he has played the bulk of his NRL games. "Not too sure where I'm going to be playing. I don't think I'll be playing fullback," Merritt said. "I think my best chance is on the wing. But we'll see what Madge (Maguire) does and what he's got planned. Hopefully I'm back in the side and we'll go from there." As part of the comeback plan, the 28-year-old spent the second half sitting on the Bears' bench with his foot in a bucket of ice - but said it felt as good as it had all season. Merritt also revealed he will need to manage the injury carefully for the rest of the year with a view to getting surgery to correct it after the season. "Today was a bit of an indication to see where I'm at and just get some match fitness," Merritt told AAP. "I've pulled up pretty sweet. It was a tough 40 minutes but was good to get it out of the way. "Hopefully I'm ready for next week and hopefully I get selected. "This has probably been the best it's felt all season. "It's been pretty tricky and frustrating to manage. Sometimes you can't walk around too freely. "It's a bit annoying but hopefully I can get through the season with it and look after it at the end of the season." Merritt showed his trademark speed with a blistering 50-metre run to score a try, before setting up centre Bennett Leslie with a deft offload. "It was good to get the legs running again, and it was good to get a try and a win as well," he added.
