WIN 20-16
The Rabbitohs have prevailed 20-16 over the North Queensland Cowboys in from of 12,213 fans at ANZ Stadium. The Rabbitohs were ahead 20-0 after just 20 minutes but failed to score again as the Cowboys drew to within 4 points with 4 minutes remaining. It was a bright start for South Sydney, winning an early penalty which led to the first try of the game to Greg Inglis in just the 3rd minute. Inglis ghosted outside the Cowboys right side defence and took a couple of players over with him to take the Rabbitohs to a 6-0 lead. After some fantastic defence including a brilliant tackle by Andrew Everingham which forced the ball loose, the Rabbitohs won another penalty. The score was soon 12-0 as Issac Luke, in a typical scoot from dummy half just a metre out, miraculously dragged four Cowboys players over the line to score. With the Rabbitohs on attack again, Tariq Sims was put on report for a hit on John Sutton as he kicked. It was Issac Luke who kicked the penalty to stretch the lead to 14-0 after 13 minutes. South Sydney's 20 minute blitz was capped off when Issac Luke held the ball up superbly from dummy half for Dave Taylor to crash over under the posts. Adam Reynolds, who had a perfect 3 from 3 with the boot, converted to give the Rabbitohs a 20-0 lead. The remaining 20 minutes of the half were a real defensive scrap with South Sydney holding on several times after the Cowboys were awarded penalties deep in their attacking half. The Cowboys just couldn't find the final pass towards the end of the first half, wasting several opportunities. Dave Taylor and Greg Inglis, fresh off Kangaroo duties were the two best on the field in the first half, both looking dangerous with ball in hand. Taylor in particular seemed to pop up just about everywhere. The second half started in a lively fashion with the Cowboys determined not to give Inglis room to return the ball. Thurston repeatedly kicked long or pinned corners to deny the Rabbitohs fullback any space. After heaping pressure on with a couple of quick penalties, the Cowboys were the first to score after half-time. James Segeyaro scooted over the line and the video referee deemed that he had planted the ball for North Queensland's first points in the 48th minute. Minutes later Ash Graham crossed for the Cowboys second try after yet another penalty for offside had given them great field position. Thurston converted from the sideline to close the gap to 20-12. Ill-discipline was costing the Rabbitohs, a 5-0 penalty count in the second half not making for pretty reading. The Cowboys were throwing everything at the South Sydney line, Thurston's grubbers forcing Everingham and Inglis to concede a couple of line dropouts. With time ticking inside 15 minutes remaining, the Rabbitohs held out a number of attacks before Dave Taylor forced Matt Bowen in-goal off a Reynolds bomb. From the dropout he nearly pulled off a memorable try, gathering the ball himself before tiptoeing down the sideline. He was only denied by a desperate tackle by Matt Bowen and Johnathan Thurston who bumped him over the sideline. After another penalty and more field position for the Cowboys, Ash Graham was over for his second and Rabbitohs nerves frayed with just 4 minutes on the clock and a now slender lead. The quick kick was missed by Thurston and the Rabbitohs led 20-16. Just a couple of minutes remained as the Cowboys once again went on the attack but the game was effectively over when Tamou knocked on near halfway. The Rabbitohs soaked up the remaining time and pulled off a nail-biting 20-16 victory.

NYC U20 Round 8
v North Queensland
Sat Apr 28, 5:15pm
WIN 36-14
Late changes Artemi and Ha'angana were out. James Roberts started fullback, Tangionia on the wing and Hedley in the center. Heyer started fiveighth. Jarrett started prop and Matthews second row. Garlick dropped off the bench and Pollard was added. James Roberts was named for the Rabbitohs Toyota Cup side to tackle the Cowboys and he didn't fail to impress setting up a scintillating try. The Rabbitohs soaked up a tonne of early pressure with the Cowboys enjoying a weight of possession and several full sets at the line. Despite this it was the Rabbitohs who were to cross first in the 15th minute with the impressive Luke Keary scything through the Cowboys line on halfway to put Tanginoa into space. Five minutes later it was James Roberts who showed tremendous power and speed to force a break, he then fed winger David Sisifa who scored under the posts for a 10-0 lead. The Cowboys managed to cross under the posts, although a desperate Jesse Roberts held up Cowboys number 6 Clifford Beetham. North Queensland did manage to cross twice in quick succession through Nathan Norwood and Zac Santo before halftime to lock things up 10-10 and take some momentum into the break. It was a keen opening to the second half for the Rabbitohs and David Sisifa was the first to score, bumping off three would-be tacklers for a great 47th minute try in the corner. The Koroisau conversion pushed the lead out to 16-10. South Sydney were in again shortly after with some great lead up work from Keary who gave to Blake Matthews, he held the ball up superbly putting Jordan Tongahai over. Another super kick from Koroisau gave the Rabbitohs a 22-10 lead. Tongahai scored twice in quick succession to complete his hattrick and put the game beyond doubt. The Cowboys scored a consolation try with Zac Santo bagging his second before a great solo effort at the death from Luke Keary. Keary, who had been tremendous in attack and defence, regathered a charged down Cowboys kick to race 70 metres to score while in hot pursuit by several Cowboys. It capped off a fantastic 36-14 win by the Rabbitohs Toyota Cup side who showed tremendous commitment and discipline in defence and a willingness to throw the ball around.

NSW Cup Round 9
v Cronulla, Henson Park
Sat Apr 28, 1:00pm
LOSS 24-34
Late Changes Peats, Haangana and Hawkins were out. Judd came into the center with Talanoa shifting to the wing. Areaiiti startd at prop, McKinnon started hooker, Matupuku and Nichols played second row, Molan started at lock. Vaiga was added to the bench. Cronulla halfback Chad Townsend made his return from injury against North Sydney at Henson Park and played a starring role in the Sharks 34-24 win. Townsend, playing his first game of the season after a sternum injury, got the Sharks on the scoreboard early when his midfield bomb led to a try to centre Ricky Leutele. Winger Sisa Waqa outlept Norths fullback Keiran Vale to knock the ball down to Leutele for a try which Townsend converted to give Sharks the lead. Sharks were in again on the very next set, and again it was off the boot of Townsend. A deft chip from the halfback into the North’s in goal, was met by a flying Waqa who beat Fetuli Talanoa to the ball. A 40/20 attempt by Townsend went out on the full and the Bears were in Cronulla’s territory for the first time in the match. A grubber by halfback Ryan Carr to his halves partner Justin Hunt gave North’s their first points. Hunt converted to cut Cronulla’s lead to 10-6. North’s were nearly in again after fullback Vale sent Curtis Johnston into space. The big winger chipped over the Sharks fullback to Vale, who fumbled the ball over the line. The Bears focused their attack down Cronulla’s right side defence and came up with points. The halves combined again after a Hunt long ball found Carr, who feined to throw long but gave a short ball to captain Bennett Leslie who charged over the line. Hunt converted despite some heckling from the Cronulla supporters, who Hunt acknowledged after the sideline conversion. Sharks five eighth Maurice Blair threw a miracle offload around the back of a Bears defender to winger Josh Lambert who crossed over the line 5 minutes from halftime. Townsend was left with a tough attempt but converted from the sideline to give the Sharks the lead at 16-12. Cronulla were in again on the stroke of halftime as replacement Tyrone Peachey broke through some tired defenders to extend the lead going into the break. Ryan Carr gave Norths the perfect start after the interval. An errant pass from Sharks hooker Jake Hawkins was met by Carr who toed the ball along the ground and score next to the posts. Hunt converted and North’s were back in the game at 22-18. Keiran Vale threw a cut out pass to Johnston who broke down the sideline but threw a wayward ball that was picked up by Greg Nichols who lobbed a pass to Hunt, who was met by a Townsend shoulder charge that flattened the North’s star. The Sharks began to dominate possession and field position but North’s defended resolutely. Norths found themselves in a rare attacking opportunity after a Cronulla penalty and nearly drew level. A Blake Judd offload found Talanoa who ran out of room and stepped out of bounds inside the Sharks in goal area. Cronulla charged down the field in the ensuing set and Chad Townsend capped off a brilliant return by scoring a try of his own. The halfback’s grubber came off a North’s defender and the ball popped up to the halfback who converted his own try to make the score 28-18 with 20 minutes to go. Bears front rower George Burgess looked to have had the ball stripped but was called for knock on 10m from his own line. Michael Greenfield charged over the line for a try in the next play and extended Cronulla’s lead. The Bear’s halves combined again to give the North Sydney team a chance with the clock winding down. A beautiful inside ball from Carr found Hunt who showed a great turn of speed to beat several defenders to the try line. Townsend’s restart went out on the full and the Bears were again on the attack in Cronulla’s half with just over 5 minutes left. However the Bears ran out of time and Cronulla defended strongly to finish the match at 34-24. North’s coach Wayne Lambkin found positives in the tough loss, “It was the best we’ve looked in attack all year”. Lambkin conceded that his team loss the battle down the middle and highlighted the experienced Cronulla front row, who got the better of his young but impressive front row pairing of Burgess and Neccrom Areaiiti. George Burgess, who returned from a 2 week suspension, was disappointed after the game, “They beat us in the wrestle today and were pretty sharp with the ball”. Burgess said he was happy to back in the black and red after 2 weeks on the sideline.
