South Sydney Rabbitohs have released promising young rugby league player Kurt French after he refused to have a heart condition addressed. Souths have paid out the remainder of his contract. Only weeks after setting a National Youth Competition record with a 30-point haul against Brisbane in round four, Kurt French was cut by the Rabbitohs. French, the son of Queensland Origin representative Ian, suffered irregularly fast heartbeat following his heroics against the Broncos. He complied with the club's instruction to see a specialist. However, he wasn't prepared to comply with the request to have a catheter ablation, an invasive procedure used to rectify a faulty electrical pathway from the heart. "It was all fine at the club and then a week later against Wests Tigers I got palpitations," French said. Rabbitohs chief executive Shane Richardson said his parents wanted French to go home to risabne and he regretted having to release him. "He's actually a very good player and he played in a first-grade trial against the Warriors at Coffs Harbour at fullback," he said. "But medically we couldn't take the risk of him playing and training. We're still paying the medical bills. "The last time it happened at the football stadium, he nearly collapsed, so we've had all the tests done and I think there is more to be done. But the bottom line is we can't let him play if there is the risk of him suffering a heart attack. Aganst the Broncos his heart would be pounding so much he couldn't breathe." The Queensland under-18 representative said he was disappointed after he had done some training with the NRL squad in the preseason and even played in some trials. Souths wish him well in his future.
