LOSS 12-26
The South Sydney Rabbitohs did almost twice the amount of defence as the Broncos in their 26 points to 12 defeat at Suncorp Stadium tonight. 33,602 spectators saw the Rabbitohs hold a slender 6-4 lead at the half time break, but the pressure built by the Broncos through sheer weight of possession and field position was too much for the Rabbitohs to repel for the full 80 minutes. A spate of errors from both teams to open the match marred the first 15 minutes of the game. Rabbitohs centre Andrew Everingham had an opportunity to put the red and greens out in front in the 15th minute but a poor option in attack thwarted the scoring chance. The Broncos were first to score when Justin Hodges was awarded a try in the 21st minute, Rabbitohs winger Justin Hunt failing to ground the ball in-goal which provided the chance for Hodges to pounce. The Rabbitohs defence was strong and it took a lucky kick to put them behind on the scoreboard. The defence continued to be string for the remainder of the half, with the Broncos camped in the Rabbitohs’ end of the field. A couple of bell ringers from fullback Greg Inglis on his opposite number Josh Hoffman told the story of the defensive attitude of the Rabbitohs, with the Broncos continually being met by a wall of the red and green. South Sydney second rower Chris McQueen managed to make the most of two repeat sets in Broncos’ territory, scoring his side’s first points in the 38th minute of the game. Five-eighth John Sutton turned McQueen underneath where he stepped twice and beat three defenders on sensational charge under the posts. Adam Reynolds converted to give the visitors a 6-4 lead at the break. The Rabbitohs had a lot of defensive work to do in the first 40 minutes, with the home side enjoying a 60-40 split of possession, much of which was inside the Rabbitohs 20 metre zone. The Rabbitohs defended stoutly, but there was a mountain of defensive in front of them to complete in the second half too. The Rabbitohs gave away a penalty just 17 seconds into the second half, immediately putting themselves under pressure. That pressure paid dividends for the Broncos when Alex Glenn took control of a Peter Wallace cross field kick to score and restore the Broncos’ lead. Corey Parker converted to give the home side a 10-6 lead early in the second stanza. It didn’t take long for the Rabbitohs to strike back, just four minutes in fact, when flyer Nathan Merritt snatched an intercept 12 metres from his own line, showing great speed to score under the posts. Reynolds converted to restore the two-point lead for South Sydney. From that point on the Rabbitohs were tacking, tackling, and then there was some more tackling. They put themselves under pressure with some ill-discipline and the Broncos were good enough to take advantage. Tries to Dale Copley in the 60th minute, Corey Norman in the 65th minute and 2013 Rabbitohs recruit Ben Te’o in the 79th minute sealed the win for the hosts, with 300 game veteran Petero Civoniceva missing the final attempt at conversion after the final siren. The Rabbitohs defended very well but a combination of possession against them and field position meant they could not hold on to the slim lead they held at two points during the match.

NYC U20 Round 16
v Brisbane
Fri Jun 22, 5:15pm
LOSS 32-34
Late Changes James Roberts and Bryant started in place of Keary and Turner. Cameron McInnes was added to the bench and Heyer dropped off the bench. The South Sydney Rabbitohs under 20s side threw away a 26-point lead to go down to the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium 34 points to 32 tonight (Friday). James Roberts joined the under 20s outfit following a stint with the North Sydney Bears in the NSW Cup in recent weeks, giving them a lift considering captain Luke Keary was missing from the team tonight. Kyle Turner was also ruled out through injury, giving SG Ball hooker Cameron McInnes the opportunity to make his Toyota Cup debut. The Rabbitohs shot out to a very comfortable lead at the half time break, scoring five first half tries to lead 26-nil after 26 minutes, carrying that lead into the break. A first half double to Aaron Gray with consecutive tries in the 12th and 21st minutes, was accompanied by four-pointers to Tyrone Phillips (3rd minute), Blake Matthews (12th minute) and Siosaia Tanginoa (26th minute). Apisai Koroisau kicked three from five in the first half to take the score out to 26-nil. The Broncos scored four quickfire tries within ten minutes in the second half through Matthew Berwick, Francis Molo, Bryce Hegarty and Tristan Lumley to take the score to 26-22 after 61 minutes. The Rabbitohs stemmed the bleeding with a try to lock Jesse Roberts, establishing a ten-point lead with 14 minutes left on the clock. The Broncos scored again through their winger Soape Palau to reduce the deficit to just four points with less than ten minutes remaining, then leveling the scores with a try to centre Aaron Whitchurch in the penultimate minute of the game. Hegarty kicked the final conversion to give the home side the win following a massive second half comeback. The Rabbitohs threw this game away after establishing a strong lead at the half time break, as well as edging out in front deep into the second half.

NSW Cup Round 17
v Windsor, North Sydney Oval
Sun Jun 17, 3:00pm
LOSS 26-33
Late Changes Keary replaced Hawkins. George Burgess started at prop and replaced Matapuku how dropped to the bench. Wilson dropped off the bench. It was a tale of two halves as Windsor beat the Bears in a top of the table clash at North Sydney Oval. The Wolves dominated the first half but the Bears clawed back in the second to make it a tight finish in a game that was dominated by Arana Taumata. After a bruising few minutes to start the game, Windsor were penalised for holding on for too long. From there hooker Brendan McKinnnon got out of dummy half and the ball went to fullback Fetuli Talanoa who held the ball up for just long enough for the defenders to make an error in judgement as he gave a short ball to Blake Judd who sprinted into the gap created by Talanoa and score the first try of the afternoon. Halfback Luke Keary missed the conversion and the Bears were off to an early lead, 4-nil up less than 5 minutes into the game. Windsor, after repelling the Bears attack, were quick to respond with a try of their own 5 minutes later. After earning a penalty, Matt Mundine gave a ball to fullback Matt Moylan who sped past Ryan Carr before stepping past Curtis Johnston and Talanoa couldn’t stop his opposite number from scoring a great try. Moylan converted his own try to give Windsor a 6-4 lead. Windsor were in again 5 minutes later through winger !!14!!. Arana Taumata through a flat cutout ball to Junior Vaivai who drew Bears winger Chris Centrone infield before shifting the ball to !!!14!!, who beat Luke Keary to the tryline. Moylan missed the sideline conversion and the scores stayed at 10-4. Windsor were bound to score again through weight of possession after 3 repeat sets inside the Bears half. Halfback Arana Taumata, who was controlling the match, continued to target the Bears right side defence and put in a big left foot step to beat 3 Bears defenders to line and extend the Wolves lead. Matt Moylan converted from the sideline to give Windsor a 16-4 lead with 15 minutes left in the first half. The Wolves continues the first half rout with a try to Sandor Earl with 8 minutes left. Windsor started their attack down North Sydney’s right side before moving the ball right across to the other sideline with slick ball movement and offloads. Brad Tighe drew Curtis Johnston in off his wing and the big winger couldn’t retreat quick enough to stop Earl from scoring as he dove to the tryline. Moylan missed a tough conversion but Windsor were still leading 20-4 after scoring 20 unanswered points. Windsor continued to pile on the pressure and the points as Arana Taumata scored his second of the afternoon. The ball went to Taumata on the last and as the defence rushed up the half feigned to kick but instead ran the ball and stepped past defender after defender to score an amazing solo try. Moylan converted to give Windsor, what looked to be, an unassailable lead at 26-4 with less than 5 minutes left in the first half. After an error in the play the ball by a Wolves player, North Sydney finally had possession in their opponents half. The Bears made the most of their rare field position with Ryan Carr throwing a flat ball to replacement Greg Nichols who split the defence 15 metres out to get the ball down on the line. Talanoa converted on the stroke of halftime to give the Bears some hope at 26-10. A strong first set after the restart, followed by a penalty, got the Bears on the front foot and a quick play the ball by Josh Starling had the defenders scrambling and Chris Hyde got out of dummy half and dived over the line through a gaping hole in the Wolves defence around the play the ball. Talanoa converted and gave the Bears the ideal start after a tough first half. The Bears came out of the half time interval a completely different side and started to throw the ball around and were finding space in the opposition’s defence. North Sydney thought they were in again in the following set after Hyde’s try, but Hyde went from hero to villain as he got involved in the play after being offside from Ryan Carr’s bomb, which would have been a try to Nichols if Hyde didn’t get involved. The Bears didn’t have to wait long for points however, a break inside their own half courtesy of a cutout ball from Nichols to Curtis Johnstone got the home side in good field position and Nichols wouldn’t be denied this time as he ran onto an inside ball from Carr to carry some defenders over the line. Talanoa converted the try and the Bears were right back in the match at 22-26. The comeback was going to be a little more difficult after losing impact player Joey Matapuku to what looked to be a serious knee injury. Matapuku was carried off 10 minutes into the second half and didn’t return to the field. 5 minutes later and the Bears were in again. Hyde got out of dummy half and ran the ball down the short side before giving the ball to captain Bennett Leslie who broke through the defence and drew the fullback, the ball went to Curtis Johnstone who sprinted to the corner and got the ball down. Talanoa missed the conversion and the score was level at 26 all with 25 minutes left in the game. The deadlock was broken by Sandor Earl who crossed over in the corner for his second, with 15 minutes left to play. Matt Mundine threw a lovely ball to Sarafu Fatiaki who quickly shifted the ball to Earl who beat Johnstone to the corner to give the Wolves the lead once again. Moylan nailed a crucial conversion from the sideline to give Windsor a 32-26 lead. A Matt Mundine field goal finished the Bears off and the Wolves cemented their spot at the top of the ladder with a 33-26 win at North Sydney Oval.
