WIN 32-6
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have all but secured a finals appearance in 2012 with a conmmanding 32 points to 6 victory over the Wests Tigers at ANZ Stadium today (Sunday). The Rabbitohs scored five tries to one, but equallu as pleasing was their ability to hold out the flashy Tigers' attack, with the men from Wests only scoring one try which came from a kick. Amazingly, on Junior Appreciation Day, all of the Rabbitohs' points came from players who have played in, and devleoped their skills in, the South Juniors competition. The Rabbitohs were under pressure early from the Tigers but were able to sustain their defensive wall, denying the Tigers any points early on in the match. The Rabbitohs finally turned the tide and got themselves into an attacking position, enabling hooker and La Perouse junior Nathan Peats to cross the first of two first half tries from close range. Kensington United and Alexandria Rovers junior Adam Reynolds added the extras to give the Rabbitohs a six-nil lead after 17 minutes of play. Reynolds potted a penalty goal five minutes later from 40 metres out in front, extending the lead to eight. A long break from Chriss McQueen and two penalties from within ten metres of the Tigers' line lead to the next points, with Peats again diving over from dummy half despite the best efforts of Tigers fullback Beau Ryan. Reynolds' conversion extended the lead to 14 after 24 minutes. The Rabbitohs' defence held strong again when hulking Wests front rower Aaron Woods was held up over the line in the 32nd minute, and on the next set of six the Rabbitohs laid on their third try to the man destined to become the Rabbitohs' greatest ever try scorer. A huge bust was made up the middle by Kensington United and Coogee Wombats junior John Sutton. Sutton was in space and had support in the form of Alexandria Rovers junior Nathan Merritt. Merritt charged the 40 metres to score the try which started 70 metres out from the goal line by Sutton. Reynolds converted to take the scoreline to 20-nil in favour of the men in cardinal and myrtle. The 'Coal Train' was particularly destructive in the first half, toying with the Tigers' left side defence, and the backs were making the most of the work being done by the big men up front. The Rabbitohs were involved in an arm wrestle to start the second half, taking 16 minutes to register their next points. It was Dylan Farrell, who won an under 17s premiership with La Perouse, who scored following another play set up by a Souths Junior combination. Mascot Jets junior Eddy Pettybourne went the blind side right and got the ball away to Reynolds. Reynolds turned the Tigers inside out with a weaving run, before offloading to Farrell who touched down adjacent to the posts. Reynolds converted giving the Rabbitohs an unassailable 26-nil lead. South Sydney went straight back on the attack, scoring a try four minutes later through Coogee Randwick Wombats junior Jason Clark in the 60th minute of play. A solid run from second rower McQueen set up the field position and good, hard charge at the line from Clark gave him the four-pointer. Reynolds converted to take the scoreline to 32-nil with 20 minutes left on the clock. The Rabbitohs did not allow any points to be scored against them until the 67th minute when Benji Marshall followed through a Robbie Farah grubber kick, the video referee ruling a try. Marshall converted his own try to take the scoreline to 32-6. South Sydney fought hard right until the siren, sealing another solid win which has taken them to 30 competition points and outright second on the NRL Telstra Premiership ladder with only five rounds remaining in the competition.

NYC U20 Round 21
v Wests-Tigers
Sun Jul 29, 12:45pm
WIN 36-30
No changes to starting line up. Woulf dropped off the bench. The Rabbitohs Toyota cup side have recorded a superb come from behind 36-30 victory over the Wests Tigers. Luke Keary was excellent in leading South Sydney to a stirring second half performance bagging a personal double. There were danger signs early as big Tigers prop Sauaso Sue scored a double before 7 minutes had elapsed.. His first was a great individual effort and he crashed against the upright before planting the ball. Less than 2 minutes later he had his second as he was the beneficiary of a Tigers break in mid-field. Manaia Rudolph converted both tries for an early 12-0 lead. The Rabbitohs looked to be almost out of the contest when Joel Luani crashed over in the 14th minute. Luani was held by three Rabbitohs defenders but barged his way over, Rudolph missing the conversion as the Tigers extended their lead to 16 points. Wests Tigers winger Matt Evans was on the end of a sweeping right side move which resulted in another four-pointer and South Sydney were in deep trouble at 20-0. Needing some inspiration it was captain Luke Keary who stepped up. He darted through the Tigers defence from 45 metres out, beating several players before scoring under the posts. Dylan Walker converted to reduce the margin to 20-6. It was soon a double blow for the Rabbitohs when Jordan Tongahai finished off a left side move to power over from close to the line. Dylan Walker couldn't convert this time and with 14 minutes remaining in the first half the score was 20-10. It was a great period for the Rabbitohs as they clawed their way back into the game but ill discipline cost them just before half-time. Off the back of a penalty, Tigers winger Kurtis Rowe scored in the left corner to again extend the lead. Rudolph's kick was short and the Tigers led 24-10 at the break. It was an exciting opening to the second half with chances both ways. Luke Keary put Aaron Gray through a gap on halfway, he beat the fullback with pace but was chased down by winger Kurtis Rowe. With Tyrone Phillips looming on his outside he attempted the pass but it flew forward and a golden chance was missed. Dylan Walker was the first to cross in the second half as he easily strolled through the Tigers defence in the 53rd minute. He converted his own try and the Rabbitohs trailed 24-16. It was game on soon after when Jordan Tongahai completed his double. He looked to have been pulled down short but somehow managed to reach out and score an important try. Dylan Walker converted again and there was just two points between the sides at 22-24. Dylan Walker was in the action soon again when he burst through from 30 metres out, ran under the posts and scored his second try. He was hit late by Kurtis Rowe and he lay motionless on the ground for some time. Tempers temporarily frayed as Rowe was put on report before the referees awarded an eight point try. Walker was stretchered off the field in a neck brace but early reports are he has been cleared of any serious damage. The Rabbitohs were then awarded a penalty in front of the posts which Koroisau duly kicked for a 32-24 lead with less than ten minutes remaining, however the action was far from over. Brodie Munro was the next to score for the Tigers giving them a sniff with just eight minutes remaining but Keary soon put them out of their misery becoming the third Rabbitoh to bag a double.

NSW Cup Round 21
v Western Suburbs, North Sydney Oval
Sun Jul 29, 3:00pm
WIN 58-6
Late Changes Starling started at lock with Molan dropping back to the bench. With Alley-Tovio dropping off the bench. North Sydney move into first place in the VB NSW Cup after a 58-6 win over the Western Suburbs Magpies. The win makes it three in a row for the Bears, whilst consigning the Magpies to their 19th straight defeat and face the prospect of a winless season. North Sydney got the scoring started early win Bennett Leslie crossing over in their second set of six. 40 metres out from the tryline, the Bears shifted the ball left and the smallest lapse in defence was all Leslie needed as he split through the gap and showed tremendous speed to race to the tryline. Hawkins missed the conversion and the score stayed at 4-0. Wests were enjoying a good spell of possession and field position and it looked as if they were going to back up from their good performance last week, however, the Bears’ defence held strong and Norths were the next to team to score points. A clever midfield chip to winger Chris Centrone from Ryan Carr, had the Magpies on the back-foot as Centrone was tackled metres short of the tryline. The ball went to Fetuli Talanoa from dummy half, who easily broke through the retreating defence to extend the lead. Hawkins slotted the sideline conversion to give the Bears a lead of 10-0 just over midway through the first half. Less than five minutes later and North Sydney crossed again. Ryan Carr received an offload and ran the ball before offloading to Blake Judd who held onto the ball before stepping past fullback Zoram Watene on his way to the tryline. Jack Hawkins converted from right in front to make the scoreline 16-0. Wests again found themselves in good field position on the back of a penalty but failed to capitalise. From there, Norths made their way down field and it was Kieran Vale who scored, after being called into the side to replace Justin Hunt, who was promoted back to the Rabbitohs’ NRL side. The ball went to Ryan Carr on the last tackle and Carr looked to kick to his winger Johnston but instead, grubbered down the centre of the field to Vale, who had no opposition in front of him as the Wests’ fullback rushed towards Johnston’s wing. Hawkins kicked another conversion from straight in from to extend the lead to 22-0 with less than 10 minutes left in the first half. With the halftime hooter sounding, Jack Hawkins put in a delicate chip to winger Chris Centrone who outleapt his opposing winger to score a great try. Hawkins nailed the conversion from the sideline to send his team in with a lead of 28-0. The second half started in similar fashion to how the first started, with Bennett Leslie charging through a hole in the defence and outsprinting the fullback to the corner. Leslie scored his second of the afternoon with just over five minutes gone in the second half. Hawkins missed the conversion and the score stayed at 32-0. After a strong charge from Josh Starling, fellow forward Matt Hyland crossed for a try. Starling had got the defence on the back foot and a quick play the ball allowed Matt Hyland to easily break through the defensive wall to further extend the lead. The Magpies hit back with a try of their own soon after, to give the Western Suburbs supporters something to cheer about. Michael Lekkas bounced off a tackle before an offload which created a gap in the defensive line which big prop Seffa Silafau charged through. Zoram Watene backed up Silafau’s effort and collected his pass to race 40 metres to score under the posts. Latu Fifita converted to make the score 38-6 with just under 20 minutes left in the game. North Sydney responded with a second try to Fetuli Talanoa soon after. With the Bears inside the Magpies 20 metre zone, Hawkins threw a long ball to a flat-footed Talanoa who stepped his way past some tired defence to grab his second of the afternoon. Norths piled on the points in the final 15 minutes with Josh Starling crossing over for a double and Chris Centrone completing his double. The highlight was Starling’s second with the big forward looking more like a fullback than a front rower as he charged through a hole in the defence at speed before fooling the fullback with a swerve to the right and than to the left before palming of the covering defenders to score a magnificent solo effort to finish off the game at 58-6.
