LOSS 6-23
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have fallen to their first defeat in seven weeks, going down 23 points to six to the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles at Gosford's Bluetongue Stadium. A crowd of 17,947 braved atrocious weather conditions on the Central Coast tonight to see Manly run in five tries to one. The Rabbitohs struck first in just the fourth minute of play when prop forward Sam Burgess crashed over for the first four-pointer of the game. Running into a vicious headwind, halfback Adam Reynolds put in a crossfield kick which saw second rower Chris McQueen tap the ball back to safety. The ball ended up with Burgess who scored adjacent to the uprights. Reynolds converted to give the Rabbitohs a six-nil lead. The Sea Eagles struck back straight away when centre Dean Whare scored in the seventh minute. Five-eighth Kieran Foran found fullback Brett Stewart looping around the back, who turn put Whare away down the left hand touchline to score. The Rabbitohs were defending well and Manly were blowing some attacking opportunities with poor handling, but neither side could grab the game by the scruff of the neck. It was not until the 34th minute of the match that the next points would be posted when Manly winger Jorge Taufua scored in the left corner. The Sea Eagles seemed to have found an area which they could exploit and they would continue to do so throughout the match. Seconds from half time, Manly halfback Daly Cherry-Evans kicked a short range field goal to extend the lead to the unusual scoreline of 9-6 at the break. The Rabbitohs continued to defend desperately in the second half, with Manly continuing to make metres out wide and big second rower Tony Williams making metres on the fringes of the ruck. The pressure paid off when Jorge Taufua scored his second try for the night, again in the left hand corner. In the 71st minute the Sea Eagles scored in the opposite corner through David Williams after some good work from centre Jamie Lyon, taking the score out to 17-6 in favour of the visitors. Dropped ball was hurting the Rabbitohs in the second half, and despite having pulled off some amazing last minute comebacks in the past, the Rabbitosh did not seem to have it in them to trouble the Manly side's defence after the fourth minute of play. To rub salt into the wound, Manly hooker Matt Ballin scored in the final minute, with Jamie Lyon's only conversion taking the score to 23-6. The Rabbitohs fought hard throughout the entire 80 minutes, but the Sea Eagles played at an intensity that the men in red and green could not match for the entire match.

NYC U20 Round 23
v Manly-Warringah
Fri Aug 10, 5:15pm
WIN 18-14
Late Changes Jarrett started at hooker and McInnes started on the bench. The Rabbitohs Toyota Cup side have outlasted a brave Manly 18-14 in horrible conditions at Bluetongue Stadium. Centre Jordan Tongahai opened up the scoring when Luke Keary cleverly put him through a gap on the left side of the field. Koroisau converted for a 6-0 lead after just 5 minutes. Both teams battled in the wind in the first half and despite good handling from both sides, few decent attacking opportunities were created. Manly had the better of field position and the Rabbitohs scored off only their second time inside the Manly 20m through Hamish Bryant. With nothing much on in the 23rd minute, Bryant bulldozed his way over just right of the posts, Koroisau converted to extend the lead to 12-0. Manly struggled to put pressure on the Rabbitohs finding the conditions difficult to kick in and couldn't cross until the 32nd minute when xx was the beneficiary of a great longball from Josh Drinkwater. Drinkwater missed the conversion in the huge breeze and the score remained 12-4. As the rain and wind started to get heavier Manly capitalised and they soon had their second as Kayse Greer touched down in the shadows of half-time. Drinkwater was again given little chance of converted with a strong breeze blowing in his face and the scores remained 12-8 into the break. Manly made the best of the early stages of the second half and had a great chance when Kayne Greer scooted away but Tyrone Phillips chased him 70m and forced the ball loose. Manly failed to capitalise until the 63rd minute when Joseph Napoletano barged his way over to tie the scores. Drinkwater was again faced with a tough kick but put it over for a 14-12 lead. With the game creeping inside the final 10 minutes the Rabbitohs needed some heroics and it was Captain Luke Keary who provided just that. The halfback had been elusive in the wet all night and slipped through a couple of defenders to score out wide and regain the lead 16-14. Koroisau's conversion went at right angles in the wind and was waved away. With four minutes remaining Jesse Roberts, who was fantastic all night, nearly sprinted away to seal it but was eventually dragged down. The Rabbitohs shut Manly out for the remainder and with second remaining Apisai Koroisau slotted a penalty to extend the final margin out to 18-14. Penalty to rabbitohs 1 minute to go. game over.

NSW Cup Round 23
v Newtown, North Sydney Oval
Fri Aug 10, 7:00pm
DRAW 16-16
Asotasi was a late inclusion with Areaiiti dropping to the bench. Hyde replaced Johnston on the wing. North Sydney won the Frank Hyde Shield despite the draw against Newtown. In cold, windy conditions both teams fought it out at North Sydney oval in a tough, even encounter. Newtown came out the more aggressive of the two and they were the first team to post points. Jack Littlejohn’s kick deflected off Roy Asotasi and went straight into the hands of Blake Williamson. The big backrower caught the ball in full flight and ran 30 metres, and over the top of fullback Kieran Vale, on his way to the tryline. Mark Kheirallah converted the try from a tough angle and Newtown had a 6-0 lead after just 5 minutes. The big North Sydney crowd thought the Bears had leveled, only for the touch judge to disallow the try. Chris Hyde got underneath a towering Ryan Carr bomb, and the ball went through three sets of hands to Jack Hawkins who raced for the corner, only to be adjudged to have been pushed into touch by Daniel Tupou, before grounding the ball. The home fans soon had something to cheer about as Kieran Vale leveled the scores in brilliant fashion. Chris Centrone had got his team on the attack after making a break down the wing, on the last play the ball Ryan Carr went down the short side but put in a kick back down the middle of the field, Vale chased and got the perfect bounce and the Bears had their first points of the evening. Jack Hawkins conversion attempt, adjacent to the uprights, smashed into the posts and the score stayed at 6-4. In a bruising first half, the Bears lost early hooker Brendan McKinnon early on. With the Frank Hyde Shield up for grabs, both teams were aggressive and the first half was an arm wrestle, with neither team capatlising on attacking forays but both going close on a number of occasions. The two teams went into half time at 6-4 with it all to play for in the second half. North Sydney came out firing in the second half and posted the first points. After bundling the opposition out of play, and after some strong hitups from Neccrom Areaiiti and Bennett Leslie, the Bears were attacking Newtown’s on-goal defence. North Sydney ran the ball on the last and Fetuli Talanoa somehow got an offload away, despite 5 defenders trying to tackle him, to Kieran Vale who crossed in the corner for his second of the afternoon. Jack Hawkins missed the sideline conversion to keep the score at 8-6 five minutes into the second half. Minutes later Newtown was attacking the Bears line only for Littlejohn’s kick to roll dead. Kieran Vale collected the ball and raced back to the 20 metre line for the restart. Vale caught the defenders napping and ran the ball quickly before passing to Chris Centrone who burst through a gap and flew 70 metres to plant the ball under the posts, outsprinting Glenn Dumbrell to the line. Hawkins made no mistake with this attempt and converted the try to give his side a 14-6 lead. Centrone’s try sparked Newtown into life, and the Jet’s looked the more dangerous side and had North Sydney under the pump. After numerous attacking raids in North Sydney’s half, Newtown finally got the try they needed. Josh Ailaomai proved too big and too strong as he barged his way over the tryline. Kheirallah slotted the conversion from in front and Newtown were back in the game at 14-12. On the very next set, Newtown made their way 100 metres down the field to score after the restart. North Sydney’s defence looked tired and the Jet’s took full advantage as Daniel Tupou easily beat Vale to cross over in the corner. Newtown elected to run the ball on the last and Nafe Seluini bolted out of dummy half before passing to Kheirallah, and despite Francis Vaiotu slipping over, the Jet’s still had enough numbers to take advantage of retreating Bear’s defence to score level the scores. Kheirallah missed the chance to extend his side’s lead and the score was locked at 14-16. With 5 minutes remaining, Blake Judd pounced on a Blake Lazarus grubber and raced downfield. Judd didn’t have the legs to make it to the tryline as he was caught and tackled 15 metres short of the line. The Bears were awarded a penalty soon after and Jack Hawkins leveled the score at 16-16. Neither team was able to land the field goal needed to win the game and the match ended in a draw. North Sydney’s win in the Frank Hyde Shield match earlier in the season meant North Sydney were awarded the Frank Hyde Shield
