Rugby League fans will for the first time be able to watch matches live on mobile phones and tablets, regardless of their carrier, under a new five-year digital media and sponsorship agreement between Telstra and the Australian Rugby League Commission. Under the partnership, announced in Sydney today, Telstra will acquire the following properties:
• Exclusive broadcast rights of all NRL matches for mobile and tablet devices*, • Naming rights to the Premiership and Sunday Football, • Operation of the NRL website and related team sites, the official NRL app, and the official NRL fantasy games; • Extensive highlights packages during and after games • Exclusive post game access/press conferences to mobile and tablet devices • Extensive signage and marketing activation rights.
*Five matches per round live and three as per Nine Network broadcast times The National Rugby League and Telstra have cemented the most successful commercial partnership in Australian sport, extending the naming rights for the Telstra Premiership into a record seventeenth season. Telstra, in partnership with the NRL, will form NRL Digital Media, a unit dedicated to providing fans unprecedented online, mobile and tablet access to the latest in Rugby League action, debate and entertainment for the next five years. As part of a game-wide digital strategy committed to providing fans with the ultimate digital experience with the game:
• For the first time, Rugby League fans will be able to watch Telstra Premiership, State of Origin and Test matches live to-air on mobile phones and tablets via the Official NRL App on iPhone and Android, regardless of their carrier. Matches on Channel 9 will be simulcast and those on Fox Sports will be live; • A full-time NRL Digital Media production unit working out of Rugby League Central will be created that is dedicated to providing fans with the best digital content in Australian sport, including unprecedented levels of video, player interviews and special behind-the-scenes insights; • Rugby League’s technology platforms will be rebuilt from the ground up, with the NRL, NRL clubs, NSWRL, QRL and One Community all slated for new digital solutions that will give fans fun and easy interactive access to all the latest content; • Fans will have access to extensive highlights packages during and after games, access to an alternative camera angle during the broadcast and to exclusive post-game features and press conferences on their mobile and tablet devices.
Interim ARLC CEO, Shane Mattiske, said the new partnership between Telstra and the ARLC will jointly deliver more fans unprecedented coverage of the game and benefits that flowed through to the sport’s grassroots. “The renewal of our partnership with Telstra is great for the game and great for all fans," Mr Mattiske said. “Over twelve years Telstra has been a key partner at every level of the game and we are delighted they have extended their commitment to Rugby League. NRL Premiership International Broadcast Deal
Rabbitohs Members and supporters based outside of Australia will be able to watch South Sydney play every week through a new international broadcast rights deal finalised today. Rugby League has secured a new international television deal that will guarantee access to key markets including the UK, USA, Asia and the Pacific. The five-year agreement with IMG Media will ensure fans overseas have world-wide access to all Telstra Premiership matches as well as State of Origin, Test matches played in Australia, City-Country and the All Stars. The partnership covers free-to-air television, subscription television, IPTV, mobile, in-ship, in-flight and gaming rights, as well as access to the NRL Films archive, and will provide international fans with:
• Guaranteed television coverage in key markets including the UK, USA, Asia, and Pacific; • Access to all games in HD either through television or online platforms, as well as access to a 30-minute weekly highlights show; • A free digital NRL Channel for international fans featuring match vision and a mobile NRL app; • All NRL and State of Origin matches available on a live or near-live basis via television or online, mobile applications, smart TVs or other media platforms; • International fans in regions where there is no TV or IPTV rights deals in place will be able to access matches for free on a leading web destination, such as YouTube or USTREAM.
“What’s exciting for Rugby League fans around the world is that we now have in place a range of different options for them to watch matches across television and digital mediums,” NRL Interim Chief Executive, Mr Shane Mattiske, said. “To have guaranteed television exposure in key markets such as the UK, USA and Pacific is really significant for growing the game’s international exposure. “As IMG Media finalises deals in markets around the world we will be able to confirm the processes in which fans will be able to tune in to watch all the excitement of the Telstra Premiership and the best representative contests in sport, including State of Origin.” Mr Chris Guinness, Senior Vice-President, Head of Asia Pacific, IMG Media, said IMG Media was committed to increasing Rugby League coverage across international markets. “We are very excited about extending our relationship with the NRL over the next five years,” he said. “The relationship has evolved from traditional international TV distribution to a complete 360-degree involvement covering all aspects of the NRL’s international media assets and we look forward to working closely with the NRL in this new exciting era.” The international rights do not include NRL properties in Australia and New Zealand, nor do they include World Cup matches or Tests overseas. Most international rights deals will be in place before the start of the 2013 Telstra Premiership season.
