Another great day out at the Return to Redfern clash. Great to see the boys in action gets some autographs and photos and see our fringe first graders get their opportunity to impress. Thanks to PNG in making the trip and putting up a good showing. Isn't it great football is back for 2013!
Congratulations to GI, Peats and Reynolds on being selected in the All Stars match. I though Peats was a standout on the night.
It was a mixed bag on the weekend for Curtis Johnston. First he scored 4 tries against NSW Cup debutants Wyong Roos in the NSW Cup trial only to be stood down by management on Monday while he is investigated for potential drugs link over some txt messages. Its either a practical joke badly timed or a desperate action of young adult trying to achieve in the highly competitive world that is the NRL.
It was confirmed that Chris Centrone and Greg Waddell have made the Souths Top 32 squad when they were presented with their Souths jumpers at the RTR match.
The All Stars match is a great vehicle for Rugby League to promote the game all allow the Aborginal community to celebrate RL in the same way Souths celebrate in the RTR match. But we need to make a few adjustments to make it grow. Firstly the Indigneous team needs to have a opposition that also wants to wear their cultural reprsentative jersey. In this I beleive the opposition should either be a NZ Maori or a Pacific Islands All Star team. The NRL All Stars while good in concept, as it is voted by teh fans is proving to be a issue again this year with around 5 players pulling out from the fans selected team. Secondly the match should be played on Saturday before the Grand Final rather than at the beginning of the season. A televised Pre-Season Cup should be played during Feb. Third, the match should be taken to expansion areas like Adelaide, Perth. If the opposition is a Maori team then over to NZ or Fiji if its a Pacific Islands team. This allows 2 cultural groups to celebrate their cultural heritage.
