Souths joined Melbourne in equal first with a rare victory up at Lang Park Brisbane against the Broncos. It was a game where Souths powered over the top the Broncos in a 15 min spell just after half time. It was a game where Souths made too many errors and put themselves behind at halftime. Two great charges by George Burgess set up two of the 4 tries scored. Souths dropped their intensity after the big game the week before against Manly. But were good enough to regain their composure and storm home to a well desrved victory. Thats now 6 from 6 away wins in season 2013.
John Sutton had a great game as leader of the team. He is getting more vocal on the park and directing the team towards each victory every week while Crocker is out injured.
Congrautlations our our brave U16 Harold Matts team who went down in the Grand Final to Parramatta on the weekend. It was a great season for them and I expect to see many of those players progress up the ranks as the years go by.
Injuries are starting to hit clubs and once again it is becoming apparant that clubs need more than just 25 players in their squad. Squads need to be 32 players so that each position is covered. Then those 26-32 ranked players need somewhere to play and that should be National Reserve Grade as NYC (u20's) is still too young to blood players into first grade. U20 players bodies are still not developed in most cases for the extra physical demands of First Grade. While QLD and NSW Cup's are are step in the right direction, there is step down as a U20's player reverts to a shoe string budget club that do not train at the high quality standards being set by each club in their First Grade or U20's camps.
Statistically it was a rocks and diamonds game by Souths with a much improved second half. Souths gifted field position on the back of 17 errors. But to Souths credit their goal line defence was great once again. Completion rates was very poor at 66%. Souths Effective 1st tackle for the match improved but was still poor at 38.7m on the back of a horrid 42.8m in the first half. 17 missed tackles was good but 18 opposition offloads meant we had to deal with a lot of second phase play.
Looking at our left side defence - Merritt-Goodwin-Sutton-McQueen (1-1-0-1) was great at 3 from 7 missed tackles last week. On the right side Everingham-Champion-Reynolds-Teo (3-1-1-0) was steady at 5 from 5 missed tackles last week.
Our go forward was great this week was much improved at 1587m for the match. Jason Clark lead the way in the forwards was the best making 13+m per hitup. With Sam Burgess, George Burgess and Clark making more that 100+m in the match. Defensively Sam Burgess was our best in the tackling raking up 39 tackles. With Te'o, Peats, Clark, George Burgess, Sutton and Inglis not missing a tackle.
