WIN 28-10
In the 25th year anniversery match at the SFS South Sydney Rabbitohs have turned in a clinical performance to secure their first two competition points of the season, defeating arch rivals, the Sydney Roosters, 28 points to 10 at Allianz Stadium tonight. The Rabbitohs ran in five tries to two in front of 35,952 Members and supporters, with mercurial try scorer Nathan Merritt bagging another hat trick of four pointers. The Roosters were the first to strike through new recruit James Maloney in the third minute of play, finding a hole in the Rabbitohs' defensive line to score and give his side a four-nil lead. Centre Dylan Farrell put a big hit on Roosters captain Anthony Minichiello in the eighth minute which started to turn the tide for the Rabbitohs, who were under pressure from an enthusiastic Roosters outfit over the first 10 minutes. At the ten minute mark, Merritt scored his first try of the night courtesy of a shift to the left by the men in the red and green. Adam Reynolds found his halves partner John Sutton who shifted the ball to fullback Greg Inglis. Inglis threw the long ball to Merritt who scored in the corner. Reynolds converted from the western touch line to take a two point advantage. Both sides turned the ball over a few times in the next ten minutes, however this period of the game will be remembered for a big hit on Mitchell Pearce by Sam Burgess, as well as Inglis running over the top of Shaun Kenny-Dowell. Ben Lowe was denied a try by the video referee in the 24th minute, and the Rabbitohs were getting on top courtesy of their forward pack rolling forward and the kicking game of Reynolds. The Roosters were also assisting with some ill-discipline leading to penalties. Merritt would register his second four-pointer in the 29th minute, this time coming from a cross field kick by Reynolds. Second rower Chris McQueen flew high for the ball, taking the catch and getting it back to Inglis. Inglis flicked the ball on to Farrell who found Merritt, scoring in his customary left corner. Reynolds again converted from the left hand touch line to extend the lead to 12-4. The Rabbitohs were well and truly on top at this point and the Roosters' frustration was beginning to show. Michael Jennings was placed on report for a swinging arm which collected Beau Champion square in the face in the 36th minute of play. The Rabbitohs were earning repeat sets off the back of Reynolds' short kicking game, and the power of Sam Burgess was evident when knocked over Roosters recruit Sonny Bill Williams on a charge up field from a goal line drop out. The Rabbitohs had not finished scoring for the half, with Chris McQueen scoring in the final minute of play. Again, a cross field kick from Reynolds found it's mark, which just happened to be the head of Inglis, with the ball bouncing back to McQueen who picked up the loose ball and charged at Merritt's left corner. The conversion was unsuccessful and the Rabbitohs went into half time leading 16-4. The Rabbitohs were controlling the ball and the flow of play. The red and greens had 60% of possession and over 75% completion rate, compared to 55% for their opponents. Jeff Lima was strong in his first appearance for the Club, as was Sam Burgess and Ben Lowe. The Roosters' ill discipline helped the Rabbitohs get away to a cracking start in the second half, giving the side great field position. They made the most of it, with George Burgess crossing under the posts for his first NRL try in the 46th minute. John Sutton stood in an attempted tackle, off loading to George who carried three defenders over the line to score. Reynolds converted from in front to take the score line out to 22-4. The younger Burgess was full of confidence, continuing to bulldoze the Roosters' defenders. Adam Reynolds was split open by a loose elbow from Aiden Guerra in the 49th minute, and Sam Burgess was placed on report for a tackle on Pearce in the 58th minute. Merritt would register his third try in the 61st minute with what was becoming a very effective left side movement for the Rabbitohs. This time it was Sam Burgess getting the ball to Sutton who found Inglis. Inglis tipped the ball on to Farrell who again put Merritt away in the corner. Reynolds converted from the eastern touch line to take the score out to 28-4. The Roosters started to play catch up football, tossing the ball around, looking for holes in the Rabbitohs' defence. They eventually found one, in the 75th minute, when Sonny Bill Williams capped his return to Rugby League with a try. Maloney converted to take the final score line to South Sydney Rabbitohs 28 - Sydney Roosters 10. Reynolds needed to have his head gash stitched after the match, and Beau Champion will have his left shoulder examined tomorrow by the Rabbitohs' medical staff.

Sam Burgess was placed on report for a high tackle in the 57th minute. The match review committee has since review the footage and charged Sam with a Grade 1 Careless High Tackle which has a 75 point charge. Sam however has a 50% loading for a similar charge last year and a 20% loading for a non-similar charge last year with 43 carry over points still in effect. That is 170 points. He has taken the early guilt plea which offers a 25% discount on the base yielding a final 138 point charge. So Sam will miss the round 2 clash with 38 carry over points.
NYC Cup Round 1
5:15pm
LOSS 24-26
Team was 1-17 no late changes. The Sydney Roosters have scored a highly controversial victory in the opening Holden Cup match of the season, defeating the South Sydney Rabbitohs 26 points to 24 after the final siren. The Roosters were tackled in front of the uprights, about 15 metres out from the Rabbitohs line when the game clock appeared to hit zero, yet the siren was not sounded, giving them the extra play in which they scored. Five-eighth Dylan Walker played a starring role for the Rabbitohs, scoring two tries and four goals for a personal tally of 16 points. The Rabbitohs opened the scoring in the fourth minute through second-rower Brad Croad who displayed good, hard, straight running close to the line to score. Walker converted to give the Rabbitohs an early six point lead. Ten minutes later the Roosters scored their first four-pointer through winger Graeme Su'a Poe in the left corner. The Roosters took the lead for the first time when replacement forward Jack Noble scored the first of three tries in the 23rd minute. The Rabbitohs were gifting the tricolours possession and field position with ill-discipline, leading to the points. Brendan Elliott converted to give the home side a 10-6 lead. Elliott kicked a penalty goal in the 27th minute to extend the lead to six before the Rabbitohs struck back. Walker scored his first try three minutes before half time, charging 40 metres down the left hand touch line to score a great individual try. Walker converted his own try to level the scores at 12-all at half time. It was Walker that gave the Rabbitohs back the lead in the second half, scoring again four minutes after the break. He slipped through the defence from close range, touching down adjacent to the left hand upright. He converted again to give the Rabbitohs an 18-12 lead. Noble scored again in the 62nd minute with Elliott's conversion levelling the scores at 18-all. Another Elliott penalty goal in the 71st minute would restore the Roosters' lead, before the Rabbitohs would snatch it back three minutes later. Centre Tyrone Phillips beat three defenders on the right side to score out wide, and Walker converted to give the Rabbitohs a 24-20 lead with less than five minutes left on the clock. One-on-one strips by both sides gave both sets of fans heart palpatations, and then the controversy began. With the clock on zero and the ball having not yet been played, the siren did not sound and the referee let play continue, clearly not realising the game was over. The Roosters put up a cross field kick on that play, which was bobbled backwards and forwards, with Noble ending up with the ball, touching down and being awarded a try. This levelled the scores at 24-all, before Elliott put a swinging conversion attempt through the posts to steal the win.

NSW Cup Round 1
v Canterbury-Bankstown, Belm Sat Mar 8 3:00pm
WIN 38-16
Late Changes Clark started lock and Tyrrell in the second row. Leslie and Roberts dropped back to the bench. Hyland and Fepuleia dropped off the bench. North Sydney started the 2013 VB NSW Cup with an impressive victory, after a big second half at Belmore Sports Ground. The Bears fielded a strong team against Canterbury with Justin Hunt, Jason Clark and Dave Tyrell and Tom Burgess all wearing the black and red in the 38-16 victory over the Bulldogs. Tom Burgess didn’t make the initial impact he was hoping for, dropping the ball with his first touch of the game. The Bears weren’t made to pay for the error, as the Bulldogs knocked on soon after. Canterbury fullback Gerard McCallum didn’t last long after a late hit forced him off the field, with Nathan Massey deputising in his absence. The Bulldog’s weren’t deterred by the early reshuffle as Tim Lafai drew three defenders and threw a one handed offload to Brett Lane, who crossed in the corner for the opening try. Halfback Trent Hodkinson missed the conversion and the score stayed at 4-0. Josh Starling’s chargedown handed Bears possession inside Bulldogs half, after a good defensive set. Bears halfback Luke Keary’s great high kick, in between two Bulldogs defenders, bounced perfectly for new centre Greg Waddell, who stepped inside Massey to post the first points for the Bears season. Apisai Koroisau, graduating from the Rabbitoh’s under 20’s, missed the conversion and the scores remained level. The Bears made in two tries in two minutes after the Bulldogs gave away a penalty. Keary went down the short side from dummy half and gave the ball to hooker Koroisau who cut out two players with a bullet pass to Chris Centrone, who done well near the sideline, to spin out of Massey’s tackle and score. Koroisau couldn’t convert and the score stayed at 8-4 to the Bears. Tim Lafai looked impossible to tackle after he broke six tackles in a 40 metre run, before being held up inches short of the line. The Bulldogs had the visitors on the back foot and had a massive overlap to the right, which Hodkinson exploited with a pinpoint kick hitting winger Brett Lane on the chest, but Lane somehow fumbled with no-one around him as he tried to plant the ball down. The Bears were again on the attack inside the Bulldogs half after a Hodkinson drop ball from a scrum feed. Koroisau was once more in the action as he elected to pass on the last tackle to Josh Starling, who looked to be held up by five defenders, but got an arm free to score between the posts. Koroisau made no mistake with the conversion and extended the lead to 14-4. However, the Bulldogs hit back in the final minutes of the first half. Hodkinson sent centre Ed Murphy through a gap and drew the fullback but Starling dragged down his support player, Josh Gill. Hodkinson was looking dangerous as his pass put Lachlan Burr in a hole and the backrower stretched out to score. Hodkinson’s conversion made it 10-14 going into halftime. The Bears came out firing in the second half and regained the advantage through a smart set play. Koroisau passed to Keary who gave a quick inside ball to a flying Justin Hunt who busted the defense down the middle of the park, Hunt drew the fullback and Luke Keary backed up well and a strong fend saw the halfback on his way to the tryline. Keary again showed his speed and agility minutes later, as he stepped his way through three Canterbury defenders to score back to back tries. Koroisau’s third conversion in a row shot the Bears out to a 26-10 lead. The Bears were looking confident as the attacked the Bulldogs, they threw the ball out to the right before shifting the ball sideline to sideline, which created an overlap for Chris Centrone to score his second of the afternoon. Koroisau slotted the conversion from the touchline to make it 32-10 with just over 15 minutes left in the game. It wasn’t all smiles for North Sydney as Jason Clark hobbled off the field soon after with an ankle injury. However, Keary’s no-look inside ball had Bears fans cheering as he found Hunt, who crossed over the line untouched. Koroisau’s conversion extended the lead to 38-10 with 5 minutes remaining. Bulldogs scored a late consolation try after a bust from impressive backrower, Lachlan Burr. Burr’s break and offload led to five-eighth Joel Romelo’s try to end the game. Trent Hodkinson converted to make the final score 38-16 to the North Sydney Bears. Coach Wayne Lambkin was happy with his sides first hit out of the season, “We talked at halftime about keeping out down the middle, keeping in control and the breaks will come eventually and that’s what happened straight after halftime, which was really pleasing. Luke Keary really showed his ability in the second half and what he is capable of, Justin Hunt was good at the back, Starling’s first half was outstanding and Api ( Apasai Koroisau) playing 80 minutes in the heat, first game out of the under 20’s was good as well.” Wayne was optimistic despite the potential loss of players through injury, “We’ve got Tom Burgess and Jason Clark carrying ankle injuries. We may have to introduce a few new forwards next week and I look forward to that”.
