WIN 17-12

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have maintained their undefeated start to the 2013 Telstra Premiership with a gutsy 17 points to 12 victory over the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, away from home at ANZ Stadium, in front of a massive crowd of 51,686, the biggest crowd since 1969 for a regular premiership match. Returning Bulldogs fullback Ben Barba took the first run of the game and was met with a brick wall of defence from the Rabbitohs. The kick-chase of the Rabbitohs was a key feature of the opening exchanges, giving Barba little room to move. Both teams gave it to each other in defence in the opening exchanges, with the first points not coming until the 14 minute mark. Those points came through Bulldogs left winger Mitch Brown. After four sets of six in the Rabbitohs' half, the Bulldogs played some hot potato football, finding Brown out wide. Krisnan Inu converted from the western touchline to give the home side a six-nil advantage. The plan from the Rabbitohs was clearly to bomb the back three of the Bulldogs, giving the chasers time to get through and pin the Bulldogs near their line. The 'Dogs were doing a good job of making metres though, and the game was turning on some entertaining, end-to-end footy. The Rabbitohs mounted a heap of pressure on the defending shoulders of the Bulldogs, earning three repeat sets from Inglis charges and Reynolds short kicks. The persistance paid off when big George Burgess crashed over for a try in the 34th minute. From a Bulldogs' drop out, Roy Asotasi returned the ball with gusto, running over 'Dogs captain Michael Ennis, knocking him senseless in the process. Three plays later, John Sutton turned a ball inside to George, who spun out of a high tackle and bumped off four other defenders to barge over for a powerful try. Adam Reynolds' conversion levelled the score at six-all. The Rabbitohs were under pressure in the final minute of the half as the Bulldogs tried to make the most of a South Sydney error in their own half. Sam Burgess saved the day in the final stages, shovelling the ball over the dead ball line from a clever grubber kick in goal. The six-all scoreline told the story of the first half, with defence dominating the proceedings, but everyone in ANZ Stadium was on the edge of their seats for the whole 40 minutes. Both sides opened the half in gruelling fashion, throwing everything they could at each other in the early stages. Both sides were hitting hard in defence, and finding a little bit of room to move to make metres up field. The Rabbitohs were under pressure in the 52nd minute with the Bulldogs enjoying a repeat set deep in South Sydney territory. The Rabbitohs defended their line gloriously, with George Burgess pulling off a try saving tackle, and then on the next play the Rabbitohs forced an error, relieving the pressure valve. It was the 'Dogs turn to be under pressure when Martin Taupau coughed up the ball 40 metres out from his line. From the third play of the set, Adam Reynolds came to the left side of the ruck, putting in a perfect cross field kick to hit Nathan Merritt on the chest, on the full, at pace, who then charged into the left hand corner for the four-pointer. Reynolds' conversion attempt hit the left hand upright and bounced away, giving the Rabbitohs the lead for the first time in the game, ten points to six. The Rabbitohs continued to mount pressure, particularly following their first penalty of the game which came in the 68th minute when Inu lifted and dropped Inglis on the point of his head 40 metres out from the Rabbitohs line. The tackle was put on report with the Rabbitohs' crowd contingent calling for Inu to be sent from the field. From the next set, the Rabbitohs charged up field. The play came to the left to Inglis, who threw a perfect, looping cut out pass to Merritt on the left wing. He cut back inside to be wrapped up one metre short of the goal line, but got his left arm free and flicked a ball out to Bryson Goodwin who scored a try against his former club. Reynolds converted from the left hand, western touchline to take the scoreline to 16-6 in favour of South Sydney with less than ten minutes left on the clock. With time slipping away, the Bulldogs started to play catch up style football, throwing the ball around looking for gaps in the South Sydney defence. But those gaps were harder to find than a child without a showbag at the adjacent Sydney Royal Easter Show. The Rabbitohs put the icing on the cake with a field goal to Adam Reynolds from 30 metres out in front, winding down the clock, but Ben Barba went on to score a consolation try in the 80th minute, and Inu's conversion took the final score to Rabbitohs 17 - Bulldogs 12. The Rabbitohs haved maintained their unbeaten start to the season with their best defensive display of the season so far. Their kicking game was near perfect, with halves Reynolds and Sutton controlling the play beautifully throughout the 80 minutes.

NYC Cup Round 4

1:45pm

LOSS 32-36

Late Changes Hedley moved to center, Phillips fullback and Paterson onto the wing. Mourad started prop Woulf second row and Tangiona moved back to the bench. The Rabbitohs nearly pulled off an amazing comeback in today's (Friday's) Holden Cup match, going down 36-32 in the final five minutes of the match. The Rabbitohs trailed 18-nil after ten minutes, but fought back to lead 32-28 with less than 15 minutes left on the clock. But it wasn't to be for the Rabbitohs, with a length-of-the-field intercept ruining any hopes of a brave comeback victory. The Bulldogs started the match on fire, scoring three tries in the opening ten minutes. Pio Seci, Patrick Templeman and Moses Mbye all crossed for four-pointers, with three successful conversions by Templeman establishing the 18-nil early lead. The Rabbitohs finally secured some ball and camped themselves in Bulldogs' territory for the next ten minutes. The 'Dogs' line finally broke, with centre Nick Hedley crossing for his side's first try to the right side of the posts, taking the scoreline to 18-4. The Rabbitohs struck again six minutes later through five-eighth Christian Hazard, taking advantage of co-captain Cameron McInnes drawing the fullback and putting him away under the black dot. Will Paterson converted, taking the scoreline to 18-10. Two minutes later the Rabbitohs attacked up the right side of the field, with replacement hooker Jackson Garlick scoring with nine minutes left in the second half. Paterson converted to bring the Rabbitohs within two points of the home side. The 'Dogs extended their lead in the 37th and 39th minites through tries to wingers Costner Lamafa and a second try to Seci, taking the scores to 28-16 at the half time break. The Rabbitohs were the first to score in the second half, with replacement Siosaia Tanginoa scoring in the 54th minute. Paterson converted to reduce the deficit to six points. Centre Aaron Gray scored four minutes later, bringing the Rabbitohs within two points of the home side. The Rabbitohs made it a hat trick for the second half when co-captain Brad Croad scored in the 66th minute of play, with Paterson's conversion giving South Sydney a four-point lead for the first time in the game. That lead would only last four minutes before the Bulldogs would return serve, with Dylan Rintoul scoring to level the scores at 32-all with less than ten minutes to play. The Rabbitohs had a chance to snatch the win with five minutes left in the game, attacking deep in the Bulldogs' end. The Rabbitohs had two-on-one with only the fullback to beat, but that very fullback took the chance at an intercept, one which paid dividends, with Templeman racing 90 metres to score the winning try.

NSW Cup Round 4

v Illawarra Cutters, Woll Sat Mar 30 3:00pm

WIN 42-12

Late Changes Starling, Vale, Matapuku, Tuivaii were out. Hunt started fullback, Corrigan center, Roberts at prop, Clark second row, Crocker lock. With Portlock and Hyland sarting on the bench. The North Sydney Bears handed the Illawarra Cutters a 42-12 drubbing at WIN Stadium in Wollongong last Saturday. One of the highlights of the win was two tries to the Bears flying winger Mitchell Buckett. Buckett scored a spectacular sixty five intercept try to open the scoring for North Sydney. He backed it up with a superb finish in the second half to ensure it was a day to remember. The Bears attack was slick, particularly in the second half. Their defence was the cornerstone to their victory. Tough and uncompromising hitting from the likes of Tom Burgess created a spectacle. Burgess was supported by his solid pack which included former test back rower Michael Crocker. Crocker played the entire first half and was replaced about ten minutes into the second stanza. The game started with an epic arm wrestle between the two sides and no tries for the first twenty minutes. The Mitchell Buckett intercept try broke the ice in a scenario that may well have led to a Cutters try had the pass reached its intended target. Three minutes later, saw a recurrence of the first try. Another intercept, this time from Bears centre Dylan Walker who streaked seventy metres to score. Walker converted his own try. Walker had a day out with the boot landing all seven conversion attempts, many from out wide. The Bears continued the scoring when a slick passing movement led to a Chris Centrone try on the corner with eleven minutes remaining in the first half. The Cutters hit back via some quick thinking by their captain, Michael Lett on the stroke of half time. Lett saw an opportunity and took a quick tap, running thirty five metres to score. It appeared that the Illawarra side may have been unlucky not to be closer on the scoreboard at half time given the nature of the Bears first two tries. Norths were quick to debunk that notion in the second half, scoring four more tries to the Cutters one. Centre Shaune Corrigan opened the account for the Bears just eight minutes into the second half. The Bears second try of the half was sheer brilliance. After shifting the ball to the right, a speedy, fingertip inside ball from Aaron Groom sent Justin Hunt through a gaping hole. Hunt ran twenty metres to score and put the result beyond doubt at 30-6. Five minutes later, a nice movement to the left hand side saw Buckett cross for his second try of the match and the Bears were on a roll. The Cutters returned fire with a nice try. Some enterprising dummy half play from Damien Cook with decoy runners saw him eventually pass the ball to Blake Phillips who scored under the posts. But it was too little too late. The Bears put the icing on the cake with their last try in the 73rd minute. A dropped ball on the first tackle from the Cutters’ James Grehan was swooped upon by Shaune Corrigan. Corrigan beat two defenders before offloading to Jesse Roberts who crossed out wide. The conversion made the final score 42-12.
