LOSS 12-30
The South Sydney Rabbitohs sank to their fourth loss of the season in Townsville tonight (Saturday), going down to the North Queensland Cowboys 30-12. North Queensland put the Rabbitohs under immense pressure throughout the match, taking the score out to 30 points to nil before the men in red and green could put points on the board. The Cowboys drew first blood in the fifth minute, a long cut out pass catching the Rabbitohs short on the open side with debutant Kyle Feldt passing back on the inside for Brent Tate to score. Thurston sprayed the conversion attempt for the Cowboys to lead 4-0. The Rabbitohs were put under immense pressure in the first 20 minutes of the match, enduring a handful of repeat sets thanks to ill-discipline and handling errors, but the Cowboys were unable to convert the pressure into points. Reynolds finally relieved the pressure with a massive forty-twenty in the 22nd minute to put the Rabbitohs in attacking position for virtually the first time in the match. The men in red and green couldn’t convert the opportunity points though, with some strong Cowboys defence repelling each raid. Again placed under pressure, Rabbitohs front rower Jeff Lima was placed on report after a push and shove with Ashton Sims, allowing Thurston an opportunity to extend the lead in the 32nd minute with a penalty goal, bringing the score 6 nil. Souths’ woes continued just before the break with Captain John Sutton being taken from the field after the five eighths ankle was caught awkwardly in a tackle. Luke Keary went on for the Captain. Mere minutes after the replacement, the Cowboys extended their lead in the 39th minute with Tariq Sims slicing through the Rabbitohs defence to take the teams into the sheds with North Queensland leading 12-0. On the resumption, the Cowboys wasted no time in putting the Rabbitohs under pressure, with the video referee denying Lane Linnett a try four minutes in. Thurston was then denied one of his own just one minute later when Gavin Cooper was deemed to have impeded the defence close to the line. Souths fans had their hearts in their mouths just minutes later with Adam Reynolds going down and requiring treatment to his knee. Mercilessly, the young half regained his composure to re-take his place in the line. But another attacking raid from the Cowboys allowed Kane Linnett to bag another simple try, with Thurston again adding the extras. Just on the hour mark, the Cowboys managed to go 100 metres, playing hot potato before Robert Lui crossed next to the posts, to take North Queensland’s lead out to 24 nil. Linnett was at it again 10 minutes later with the Cowboys turning defence into attack. With the Rabbitohs looking to score, a Chris McQueen lost ball allowed the Linnett to clean up, racing 100 metres to touch down to make the score 30 nil. It took the Rabbitohs 75 minutes to finally cross the line, with Matt King sending the ball back inside to Bryson Goodwin near the touchline to open their account for the night. Reynolds added the extras from the sideline to bring the score to 30-6. Right on full-time, George Burgess strode through in typical style to bring the score to 30-12, marking the Rabbitohs’ fourth loss of the season. But of bigger concern is the injury to John Sutton's ankle. The match also showed a mark of respect to former Souths player Graham Murray and Cowboys coach who passed away during the week.

North Sydney made it four wins in a row when they came from behind to steal a win at North Sydney Oval. A late try from Darren Nicholls completed the comeback and all but secured the Bears a top 4 finish. A massive hit on Luke Burgess sent the big Englishmen on his back, and set the tone for the rest of the match. A big defensive set from the Mounties forced an error for the Bears and an early chance, however, Blake Ferguson’s kick bounced out of play. A penalty for an infringement in the ruck gave the visitors another chance to score but Jake Foster ran the ball from dummy half on the last tackle, despite the calls for the ball to be thrown wide. A massive fend from Sami Sauliuma sent Matt Evans flying and the Mounties continued to attack Evans on the right edge. A long, cutout ball from Mitch Cornish hit Bill Tupou on the chest, who then popped the ball back on the inside to Sauliuma to open the scoring. A towering bomb from former Bears captain and halfback, Ryan Carr, was put down from Hunt and went dead in-goal. However, the Mounties couldn’t capitalise on the error as Demtri Pelo lost the ball over the tryline. Scott Jones was penalised for holding on for too long, giving the Bears their first genuine attacking chance. Koroisau had the chance to force a repeat set but his touch was far too heavy and bounced dead in-goal. On the back of another penalty, this time for Pelo questioning the referees decision, Koroisau again had he chance to pile on the pressure but again he kicked dead on the last tackle. Ferguson and Carr’s big hit in Kyle Turner forced a slow play the ball from the backrower, which resulted in a poor kick under pressure. Fullback Pelo brilliantly return the kick and sliced through the defence to set up Bill Tupou who sprinted down the left edge before giving the ball back to Pelo who was wrapped up in a desperate, covering tackle from Greg Nichols. On the next play Cornish held up ball and Jake Forster forced his way through the Bears right edge defence to make it 10-0 Mitchell Buckett dropped the ball in an innocuous looking tackle, which forced a stoppage as the winger stayed down. Buckett played on and this seemed to spark the Bears into life as they went from one end of the field to the other. Koroisau went close when he took on the defence and on the next play Luke Burgess crashed over the tryline. Koroisau converted the try to reduce the lead to 6-10. Mounties threw the ball around and found themselves on the Bears 10 metre line on the first tackle, after a mistimed bomb from Darren Nicholls. Despite Shaune Corrigan swapping sides with Evans to cover the right side, the Mounties continued to attack down that edge and scored again through Bill Tupou. Blake Ferguson missed the conversion and the teams went into the interval with the visitors leading 14-6. Jesse Roberts had to be helped from the field on halftime with a leg injury and didn't return to the field of play. North Sydney started the second half brightly as Nicholls grubbered into the in-goal to force a repeat set. After back-to-back repeat sets on the Mounties line, Joey Matapuku broke through the defence to score under the posts. After consecutive errors from Mitchell Buckett, the winger redeemed himself when picked off a long ball from Carr and ran 90 metres to score and put his side in front for the first time in the game. Koroisau converted the try to push the lead to 18-14 with just over 20 minutes left. Dimitri Pelo again proved how dangerous he is in broken play with another great kick return. On the last tackle, Mounties chanced their arm and again attacked the Bears right edge and Buckett chose to come in off his wing and the ball was floated out to Bill Tupou who strolled over in the corner. Ferguson had the chance to put his side back in front and despite the strong protests of the crowd, Ferguson held his nerve to convert the try and then acknowledge the vocal fans. A break up the middle of the ruck from Justin Hunt, got the Bears into an attacking position. Peats tried his luck with a scoot from dummy half before Nicholls showed him how it's done by burrowing over after Peats was held up short. Koroisau converted the try as the Bears took back the lead 24-20 with just under 15 minutes left. Mounties hit back again soon after, as Shane Shackleton came up with the ball after a massive bomb from Mitch Cornish. Blake Ferguson again converted to sneak the Mounties in front 26-24. Ferguson had a chance to finish off the game after making a 70 metre break but was denied by a magnificent covering tackle by Justin Hunt to hold up the NSW Origin winger inches short of the try line. The miraculous tackle by Hunt inspired his troops as North Sydney made their way down the other end of the field and captain Darren Nicholls identified the Mounties tired, big men and busted through some weak defence to score the match winner much to the delight of the home fans. Koroisau converted to make the final score 30-26 and extend the Bears winning streak.
