LOSS 8-26

Melbourne have marked their turf as defending NRL champions by seeing off fellow competition heavyweights South Sydney 26-8 at AAMI Park. A few minutes of Melbourne magic which produced two tries early in the first half set up the grinding victory on Friday night. Souths superstar and former Storm boy Greg Inglis didn’t play, still troubled by the knee injury suffered during State of Origin last month. The Rabbitohs were also missing injured five-eighth John Sutton although his replacement Luke Keary impressed in his first NRL start. Last round Melbourne crushed Canberra 68-4 and they began this match similarly threatening fashion. In the fifth minute halfback Cooper Cronk flung a wild ball that was batted twice across field, ending up in the arms of Will Chambers, who raced through a gaping hole in the stunned defence. Three minutes later Melbourne scored again after Rabbitohs winger Dylan Farrell tried to work the ball from his own line but was barrelled back across by a wall of Storm defence. He spilt the ball which was pounced on by prop Jesse Bromwich. Farrell later saved a certain try by Sisa Waqa but his night finished on a sour note, stretchered from the field in a neck brace after his head collided with teammate Andrew Everingham’s knee while going up to take a high ball. Apart from those opening minutes the match was fairly even, with Souths scoring late in the first half through Ben Te’o off an Adam Reynolds bomb. The difference was that Melbourne made the most of their opportunities and the Rabbitohs didn’t. They weren’t helped by an erratic performance by halfback Reynolds. Two dubious refereeing decisions also stalled their momentum as prop Sam Burgess was penalised for taking out Billy Slater in the air, although it appeared the fullback had landed. On the back of that penalty the Storm scored down the other end but it looked like Waqa failed to ground the ball over the line. Melbourne put the result beyond doubt with eight minutes remaining when Justin O’Neill ran at pace on to a Slater ball and beat Nathan Merritt to touch down. Souths coach Michael Maguire said he could take confidence out of the way his team responded after a poor start. “We’ll take plenty of positives, I thought the effort from our players was great,” he said. “It was just unfortunate, a bit of polish at times. “We built pressure but it was our finishes and a few different things at the back-end of our sets. “We’ll get a lot out of that game.” Inglis and Sutton (ankle) are both rated a strong chance to return for another big clash against Manly next Friday night. Maguire said Farrell was initially “in a bad way” but had recovered well in the change rooms. Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy praised his side’s defence, which was the key to their win. He thought they did a good job containing the three bustling Burgess boys – Sam, George and Thomas. “I liked the start but I thought we made it really hard on ourselves in the last 15 minutes of the first half when we didn’t complete our sets,” he said. “You start giving Souths some ball somewhere near your tryline, at some stage they’re going to bust you. “Our attack wasn’t as sharp as I would have liked but they’re obviously a good defensive side and they’ve led the comp for most of the year.”

North Sydney have moved into second place in the NSW Cup, knocking Newcastle back to third position with a gritty 23-10 win in perfect conditions at North Sydney Oval. A field goal from Darren Nicholls and a late try from Kyle Turner sealed the victory in an error-riddled match. Newcastle were forced to play the second half with 16 men after Timana Tahu injured his ankle. The Knights had the first chance of the afternoon on the back of a penalty, but Adrian Davis coughed up possession whilst trying to spread the ball wide. Apisai Koroisau has improved with every game in the number 7 jersey, and he earned his side a repeat set with a clever kick into the in-goal area. Daniel Fepuleai then went down the short side, late in the tackle count, to Darren Nicholls who threw a cut out ball to a flat footed Mitchell Buckett, but the winger showed great strength and acceleration in forcing his way over for the first try of the afternoon. Koroisau’s conversion went in off the post to give the Bears a 6-0 lead. Both teams looked threatening early in the first half, Korbin Sims’ offload put Will Smith into a hole and the five-eight was dragged down short of the line. While Justin Hunt combined well with Darren Nicholls, as the fullback made a break up the centre of the ruck after an inside ball from the captain. Despite the chances being created, simple errors were costing both sides. Matt Hilder dropped the ball after a repeat set on the Bears tryline. Josh Starling turned over possession inside his own half after a poor pass. Newcastle failed to capatilise as Smith kicked the ball dead. Newcastle gifted the Bears an opportunity after turning over possession, whilst working their way out of their own half. Curtis Johnston tried his hand when he kicked ahead for himself early in the tackle count but his kick trickled out of play. From the turnover from Johnston, Newcastle threw the ball out to the left on the second tackle to Timana Tahu, who stepped inside two players and beat the fullback in a brilliant 50 metre solo effort. Norths hit back soon after when a perfectly weighted cross-field kick from Koroisau was plucked out of the air by Bennett Leslie. Leslie out leapt three Knights defenders to score and extend the lead. Koroisau nailed the conversion and it was 12-4 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half. Newcastle was building pressure inside North Sydney’s half but Adrian Davis threw an intercept pass to Bennet Leslie, who was tackled on the 20 metre line. Despite the numbers advantage on the right, Jason Clark elected to run the ball on the last and the Knights defenders scrambled to hold him up just short of the try line to run out the first half. Timana Tahu didn't return to the field in the second half after limping off late in the first stanza. North Sydney immediately attacked the side that Newcastle had to cover for Tahu's absence. Mitchell Buckett stretched out to score his second of the afternoon after great build-up play left the winger with plenty of room. Newcastle looked to have hit back when Mantellato crossed in the left corner but the try was disallowed for a forward pass in the build up. From that error, North Sydney went from one end of the field to the other and forced a repeat set. However, a knock on turned over possession when the Bears had a great chance to extend the lead. On the back of a penalty, Newcastle had North's on the back foot and Rodney Mason charged onto a short ball and was always going to be hard to stop close to the line. Mantellato converted to get the visitors back in the game at 16-10 with 20 minutes left in the game. Soon after, Buckett was denied his hat trick when he was adjudged to have lost the ball in the act of scoring a try in the corner. Korbin Sims was placed on report for an ugly lifting tackle in Josh Starling. The Bears turned over possession when Clark threw a pass from dummy half to no-one. Newcastle turned the ball straight back over to the home side with an error from front rower Mitchell Frei. Newcastle were struggling to complete a set and it was Paterika Vaivai’s turn to hand the ball over with a poor pass that went over the sideline. From that error, the Bears worked their way downfield and Nicholls successfully nailed a field goal, to put the Bears ahead by more than a converted try at 17-10 with 5 minutes remaining. Newcastle attempted a short restart that was regathered by Jason Clark that had his side in good field position. The Bears finished off the game with a try to Kyle Turner who was put into a hole from a great ball from Clark to make the final scoreline 23-10.
