The South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs will be playing for much more than two points come Friday night, with the two teams set to do battle for the Alcatel One Touch Special Olympics Cup. Special Olympics Australia is an organisation that currently provides over 7,500 athletes with an intellectual disability the chance to participate in sport in the process allowing them to reach their personal best, with both the Rabbitohs and Bulldogs supporting the initiative by playing for this weeks prize. According to Special Olympics Australia, every two hours, an Australian child is diagnosed with an intellectual disability. The organisation seeks to engage these people through sport, encouraging them to live healthier and happier lives. Come December, 400 Special Olympics athletes will don the green and gold to represent Australia at the Inaugural Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games in Newcastle. Athletes will compete against other athlete with intellectual disabilities from over 32 countries. Souths Cares General Manager Shannon Donato said that this Friday nights game will go a long way to help raise the profile of the Special Olympics, as well as providing an all-important opportunity for the organisation to raise funds for the Australian team. South Sydney use the Special Olympics Cup to raise the profile of the organisation, helping to raise funds for the Australian Special Olympics team, said Shannon. The Special Olympics is the largest sporting organisation for people with intellectual disabilities, including children and adults, and its function is to ensure that these people are respected and held in high esteem as athletes. It makes them really feel a part of the elite sporting landscape though as well, which at the end of the day is what its really about.
