LOSS 12-24

A regular round premiership record crowd of 59,708 witnessed the battle for the Minor primership at ANZ Stadium and Souths Sydney take out the Ron Coote Cup. South Sydney coach, Michael Maguire, says 'we just didn't build any pressure, we didn't get too many back-to-back sets. It's something we work on. Souths coach Michael Maguire says the Rabbitohs can bounce back from Friday night’s 24-12 defeat to the Sydney Roosters - and they will use losing the minor premiership as motivation for the bigger prize. Souths will more than likely back up next Friday night at ANZ Stadium against Manly if results go as expected over the weekend and the Sea Eagles remain in third place ahead of Melbourne, who will play the Roosters probably on Saturday. Although Friday night was rated the best and most physical game of the year there was no hiding Maguire’s disappointment and he conceded his players blew tremendous opportunities that could have turned the game in their favour. “It probably wasn’t one of our best games of the year. We just didn’t build any pressure,” Maguire said. “Areas of our game just let us down throughout the night.” The kicking game of Adam Reynolds was probably near the top of his list. Reynolds is known for having the best short kicking game in the NRL but Friday night it was off. There was plenty of talk in the build up about the match-up between the halves with the NSW and Roosters pairing of Mitchell Pearce and James Maloney finishing on top of the Reynolds-John Sutton combination. Maguire said: “We unfortunately didn’t get too many back-to-back sets and that provides pressure and we didn’t apply that tonight and we are normally very good at that so it is something we need to have a look at and I’m sure we will get back to it next week," he said. “There were opportunities and in these type of games you have to make sure you take those. We got a lot of lessons out of tonight. Obviously the season is now finished and now it is into the finals and we need to make sure we are spot on with our plays.” Asked if they could recover and turn it around next week, Maguire said: “Fore sure, yeah, without a doubt. “The boys obviously were very disappointed in there but we spoke about what we need to do. We need to just play our style and make sure we get back to our game.” Maguire pointed out that Souths' completion rates summed up the performance with the usually clinical Rabbitohs only completing 25 of 40 sets, way below their usual standards. “In that second half we completed eight out of about 17 sets so any game like that is always going to be a tough one,” he said. Maguire said missing out on the minor premiership was a small price if they learn from Friday night’s experience in the weeks ahead. “Obviously we saw the minor premiership as quite a major thing but unfortunately we missed that tonight,” he said. “But our main focus is obviously what happens in this next month. “That is what we have been working hard for and we have put ourselves in a great position to get that home final and we will obviously play whoever it is next Friday I think.”

The North Sydney Bears wrapped up their finals preparation with a commanding 48-6 win over the Auckland Vulcans in perfect conditions at North Sydney Oval last Saturday. It was the Bears’ third consecutive victory in a dominant period that has netted an aggregate 140 points and secured third position on the VB NSW Cup ladder. The loss continues Auckland’s indifferent form away from home and leaves them searching for ideas ahead of the finals. The opening exchanges were evenly shared as both sides played through the middle before kicking long. Norths opened the scoring in the 12th minute after great teamwork from Nathan Peats and five-eighth Darren Nicholls – Peats darted up the middle finding Nicholls on the inside who was dragged down short but managed to deliver Peats a clever ball to cross under the posts. Livewire half-back Apisai Koroisau did it all himself in the 21st minute when he questioned Auckland’s right edge with a dummy before accelerating through the line and racing 30 metres to score out wide. Koroisau’s touch line conversion extended the Bears lead to 12-0. The Vulcans’ pack soon found it tough going in the sunny conditions and prop Dave Tyrell opened them up down the middle on a 40 metre charge that ended with Matt King gapping the cover defence to score adjacent to the right post and a dominant 18-0 score line in the 27th minute. Auckland capitalised on back-to-back penalties to close the gap in the 32nd minute after a play down the left edge saw hulking centre Agnatius Paasi hold up defenders and offload to winger Esera Esera who showed dazzling footwork to touch down near the posts. Pita Godinet’s conversion edged Auckland closer and the score remained 18-6 at halftime. North Sydney extended the lead to 18 points nine minutes after the interval when a miraculous Koroisau one-handed offload behind an Auckland defended open the way for second-rower Ben Lowe to cross un-touched. Auckland’s intensity was questioned when Matt King surprisingly found himself in space after taking an uncontested mid-field bomb before linking with skipper Nicholls who bolted clear to finish the 30 metre movement near the uprights for a 30-6 margin in the 55th minute. The pain continued for Auckland as the Bears racked up another three tries between the 63rd and 75th minutes. Winger Andrew Everingham crossed for a doubled within seven minutes – both times finishing off back line spreads in the right corner. Koroisau completed his double with a cheeky grubber from five metres out - the beneficiary of a rebound off an unlucky Auckland defender – his conversion blowing out the score line to 44-6 and a personal tally of 20 points. Curtis Johnston showed a clean pair of heals scoring in the Ken Irvine Scoreboard corner to round out a 48-6 win two minutes before the final hooter.
