The match was a game of three periods. First period Souths were on fire and unstoppable leading 14-0 with two diallowed tries. Then second period we fell into a heap and let the Broncos in for 22 unanswered points. Followed by a period were both side struggled to wrap up the match. It was what I call a real rocks and diamonds game, highly entertaining in front of Souths second biggest crowd in Brisbane in what is now becoming a new ANZAC tradition up in brisbane But in teh end it ended up being two dropped balls and a poor setup for field goal that cost us the game. Time for some field goal practice sessions.
It was a night for one of the greatest solo tries ever. GI fielded a kick out on his 15m line and ran through the Broncos team bumping off player after player and including the referee and using his pace to score a try that will go down in ANZAC folklore.
Bears have picked up a mid year signing in Mark O'Dare who hails from Sydney University Rugby Union. He debuted two weeks ago and then was on then end of 3 tries using his speed and ability to find the try line. It was a performance that has made people standup and take notice.
Congratulations on our U16 and U18 who both won through to the Preliminary Finals. This is the first time we have both joinor teams this far through in over 10 years.
I love test football, but the timing of the Trans-Tasman test really needs to be moved. It needs to occur after SOO. We should be progressively build up our representative season starting with City v Country in both NSW and QLD, then the SOO series and culminating in the Australian international fixtures. At the moment we are seeing players being rested, pulling out and making what should be a great start to the representative season, has become a farce this year.
Statistically it was strange game. Completion rates were improved at 76% but we made a poor 12 errors and only conceeded 5 penalties. But errors cost matches against Top 4 teams and a huge error by GI resulted in a major momentum change in the game. Souths Effective 1st tackle for the match good at 31.9m. But missed tackles were very poor at 30 tackles this week. We allowed 7 opposition offloads.
Looking at our left side defence - Goodwin-Auva'a-Sutton-Turner (2-2-2-3) was poor with 9 missed tackles. On the right side Johnston-Walker-Reynolds-Teo (1-2-1-3) was dropped to 7 missed tackles this week.
Our go forward was good at 1350m. George Burgess lead the way in the forwards was the best making 10+m per run. With George and Sam Burgess making more that 100+m in the match. Defensively Turner was our best in the tackling raking up 29 tackles. With only Luke Burgess not missing a tackle.
