WIN 38-20
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have retained the Charity Shield tonight (Saturday) after accounting for the St George Illawarra Dragons by 38-20. In the first Charity Shield to ever be played outside of Sydney, the Rabitohs put in a polished performance to come away with the victory, despite missing regular halfback Adam Reynolds, while also not having the services of Greg Inglis for much of the game. The game started poorly for the Rabbitohs when Dylan Walker sailed the kick-off over the dead-ball line on the full, giving the Dragons early possession. But despite four repeat sets on the Rabbitohs line, the men in red and green held strong to keep the Saints at bay. The defence proved to be vital when Souths were able to score off their first real attacking opportunity of the match – Beau Champion finishing off a bizarre movement after a Sam Burgess kick. Bryson Goodwin added the extras from out wide to give the Rabbitohs an early 6-0 lead. Saints’ promise in the early stages of the match began to seem a distant memory after former Rabbitoh Dylan Farrell’s kick-off also sailed over the dead-ball line, gifting Souths field position. Souths capitalised immediately through Bryson Goodwin who bagged a converted try off the back of some great lead-up work from Sutton and Dylan Walker. The Dragons then bombed an opportunity when Gareth Widdop threw a bullet-like pass to an unmarked Brett Morris for a certain try, but the winger couldn’t hold onto the pill. But the poor execution wasn’t confined to the Saints. Dylan Walker failing to find touch from a penalty again gifted the Dragons field position, but this time they made no mistake – Jason Nightingale finishing off a backline movement to score in the corner. With just under 15 minutes remaining in the first half, Greg Inglis kicked into gear to link up with Lote Tuqiri, who raced 30 metres to score in the corner. Goodwin failed to convert the try leaving the score at 16-4. Shortly after, John Sutton showed his halfback skills with a double-pump and a short ball to Joe Picker at close range for the former Raider to race in under the posts. Goodwin added the extras to make it 22-4 going into half-time. After the break, Rabbitohs fans held their breath as Greg Inglis stayed down after a head-clash with Dragons playe Dan Huntr. Inglis left the field, but from the very next play, John Sutton put in a cross-field kick for Chris McQueen to touch down in the in-goal to make it 26-4. Souths went on with the job when Issac Luke scored a sneaky try from dummy-half under the sticks. Goodwin converted to make it 32-4 in the red and green’s favour. With just over 22 minutes in the match remaining, George Burgess added his name to the score-card in typical fashion under the sticks, taking Josh Dugan out of the match in the process with a knee injury when the larger George hit his head against Dugan's knee. Goodwin converted to make the score 38-4. The Dragons weren’t dead yet though, with a sharp backline movement splitting the Rabbitohs’ defence to allow Peter Mata’utia to score virtually untouched. They backed it up with another try to Adam Quinlan, who took a beautiful pass from Jack de Belin to score. Gareth Widdop converted to make it 38-14. Mata’utia bagged his second of the match with just two minutes remaining for the Dragons with Gareth Widdop converting to bring the final score to 38-20.

LOSS 16-34
No changes team was as named. The South Sydney Rabbitohs’ NYC side has gone down to the St George Illawarra Dragons in the curtain raiser to the 31st annual Charity Shield by 34-16 this afternoon (Saturday). The Rabbitohs were the first to go in mere minutes into the match, with fullback Alex Johnston showing great speed and strength to run 40 metres while fending Dragons defenders from all angles to score. Five-eighth Irae Simone converted to give Souths an early 6-0 lead. Saints hit back mid-way through the half through Brent Anderson who planted the ball over the stripe out wide. Hayden McRae converted to level it all up at six apiece. Souths broke the deadlock just minutes later when Sam Young finished off a slick backline movement by diving over the line in impressive fashion. Dragons centre Sitiveni Moceidreke then took full advantage of a break from halfback Adam Clune when he strode over next to the sticks to make it 12-10 in the Saints’ favour going into the break. It took just 10 minutes to get the scoring going after the break, with the Dragons’ Issac Thompson scoring out wide off the back of a perfectly weighted kick. Thompson backed the effort up just 5 minutes later when he scored his second of the day, making the score 20-10. Thompson was at it again with 19 minutes remaining when he bagged his hat-trick out wide to bring the score to 24-10. Things got worse for the Rabbitohs when Luciano Leilua went in for the Dragons, with Hayden McRae slotting the conversion to all but sink the Rabbitohs with 13 minutes left at 28-10. The men in red and green weren’t quite done yet though, with lock Cheyne Whitelaw split the Dragons defence to race over for a try from close range. Irae Simone converted to make it 28-16. Issac Thompson’s day got even better when he went over for his fourth try of the day to make it 34-16 in the Dragons’ favour to round out the match.

LOSS 12-50
There were a number of late additions with 16 people sitting on the bench. Nick Hedley also trialed this week. The match was played as 3 x 26.5 thirds. The North Sydney Bears have gone down to the Illawarra Cutters in the first game of the day at WIN Stadium in Wollongong by a score-line of 50-12. The two sides tested each other in the early stages and it didn’t take long before the Cutters were within striking distance. A short-ball to lock Matt Groat near the line saw the big forward power over next to the sticks for opening points. Michael Witt converted to give the home-side a 6-0 lead. The Cutters backed it up five minutes later when Peter Mata’utia spun out of two tackles at close range before planting the ball down for a try. Michael Witt converted to make it 12-0. Norths put themselves under pressure with a string of drop-balls, and it wasn’t long before the Cutters were in again to make it 16-0. Despite a promising attacking raid from the Bears with 15 minutes left in the first half, the visitors found themselves down another try when the Cutters’ Nathan Green raced over to score out wide. Michael Witt converted to make it 22-0. The Bears finally mounted an attacking raid that ended with Kirisome Auva’a hitting the ball at speed to cross out wide. Brayden Wiliame converted to bring the score to 22-6. The revival was short-lived though with the Cutters’ Willie Mataka grabbing a four-pointer of his own out wide. Michael Witt’s conversion made it 28-6 to take the teams into the break. It took an age for points to be scored again, with the Cutters’ Ryan Carr breaking the drought with a converted try to make it 34-6. The Cutters’ Charlie Runciman was next to score out wide with Carr adding the extras with a brilliant kick from the touchline to make it 40-6, and it didn’t stop there. Kilifi Tia-Kilifi added put his stamp on Illawarra’s scorecard before fullback Kyle Eather added the extras to make it 46-6. North Sydney needed something in order to lift, and they got it in the form of a barnstorming run from Neccrom Areaiiti, who raced through for a try. But Nathan Smith from the Cutters had other ideas, racing down the touch line before crossing the line for yet another four-pointer to make it 50-12 to round out the match. But right on the stroke of full time, a vicious high shot from a Cutter on a Nick Hedley player saw the Illawarra player sent off, while the Hedley was stretchered from the pitch.
