LOSS 16-25

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down to the Wests Tigers by 25-16 in round three of the Telstra Premiership at ANZ Stadium in front of 20,061 Members and supporters. The Rabbitohs lost Greg Inglis early In a brutal encounter plagued by poor ball-control ill-discipline, sin-binnings and a handful of players placed on report on both sides – the Rabbitohs struggling to find their rhythm against a Tigers outfit keen to make a statement. With two minutes gone, the Rabbitohs got the first penalty to give them attacking position 31 metres out from the line – and it paid dividends immediately. A short pass from John Sutton to Ben Lowe opened up a gaping hole in the Tigers’ defence for Lowe to race the remaining 12 metres to open the scoring for the red and greens. Reynolds converted to make it 6-0 in Souths’ favour. Pat Richards’ towering kick-off saw Greg Inglis have to race to get under the pill. With Inglis getting in low to make the catch, Tim Simona collected the Rabbitohs fullback high with a shoulder to the head. Inglis left the field causing a shift in positions. Kyle Turner came on as a replacement for his first grade debut while Nathan Merritt reverted to fullback. Despite getting a penalty for the incident, it was the Tigers who looked to score through Keith Galloway. But the big prop lost control of the ball as he attempted to plant the ball down. An awkward tackle on George Burgess saw big brother Sam take exception, a penalty going the way of the Tigers as a result – the fiery opening to the match continuing. On the back of a number of repeat sets thanks to a string of penalty’s and drop balls on the Rabbitohs line, the Tigers’ Luke Brooks sent Bodene Thompson over from short-range to make it 6-4 in favour of Souths. After a torrid mid-section of the half, Tim Simona was in for the Tigers after Braith Anasta hoisted a towering bomb. The kicks ensuing contest cast considerable doubt over the try, but video refs Jared Maxwell and Andrew Dunemann were happy to give the four-pointer. Pat Richards converted from the sideline to give the Tigers the lead 10-6. Wests rode the momentum immediately when Pat Richards finished off a sleek backline movement to seemingly score out wide. The video ref disagreed, but the Tigers got a penalty as a result of Ben Lowe’s effort to stop the try was deemed to be too high. But Tim Simona made no mistake a minute later when he crossed for his second of the night on the back of the penalty. Anasta missed the conversion leaving the Tigers leading 14-6 to round out a brutal first half. The second half started poorly for Souths with the Tigers’ Pat Richards taking advantage of the smallest of overlaps to score right on the touchline. The winger failed to convert his own try, leaving the scores at 18-6 mere minutes into the second half. The Rabbitohs looked to score through Adam Reynolds, but the video referee called a knock on earlier in the play. But the Tigers were in again shortly after through James Tedesco, who picked up a well-placed grubber kick from Luke Brooks to score. Pat Richards converted to extend the Tigers’ lead to 24-6 with 26 minutes remaining. The Tigers’ Braith Anasta looked to seal the win early with 18 minutes left with a field goal to bring the score to 25-6. With the match raining high tackles, a general caution from the referee warning; ‘next player’s off’ eventually resulted in Luke Burgess being sin-binned for just that. A forty-twenty to Adam Reynolds briefly gave the Rabbitohs a look at the Tigers side of half-way, and Joel Reddy finally went over for the Rabbitohs in the corner with three minutes remaining. Reynolds missed the conversion leaving the score at 25-10. Luke Brooks was also sent to the sin-bin for a professional foul after another Reynolds forty-twenty with Reddy again going through to score off the back of a well-timed Reynolds pass to make it 25-16.

NYC Cup Round 3

5:15pm

LOSS 16-26

No Changes Souths were 1 to 17. The South Sydney Rabbitohs NYC side has gone down to the Wests Tigers in round three of the competition in a tight encounter. It didn’t take long for the Tigers to assert their authority on the match, with winger Tom Satterthwaite racing over in the corner inside the first two minutes. Halfback Mitchell Moses converted to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead. But the Rabbitohs hit back inside in the first eight minutes of the match – Cheyne Whitelaw steaming onto a short pass from hooker Aaron booth close to the line. Irae Simone converted to level the scores back up at six apiece. Right on the 20 minute mark, Simone snatched the lead for the red and greens by swooping on a well-wighted kick into the in-goal to touch down before converting to make it 12-6. Marion Seve added two quick tries of his own for the Tigers though, palming off a brace of Rabbitohs defenders on both occasions to cross the line out wide. Mitchell Moses converted Seve’s second try to make it 16-12 going into the sheds. On the resumption, Simone was at it again – pouncing onto another kick into the in-goal to grab his second of the night to level things up once more. Simone’s conversion attempt hit the upright leaving the scores locked at 16 apiece. The Tigers continued on with it mere minutes later when hooker Manaia Cherrington slid over from dummy-half to bring the scores to 20-16. Things got worse for the Rabbitohs when Mitchell Moses took a pass on the 40 metre line before racing away to touch down under the stick – the half converting his own four-pointer to make it 26-16 in favour of Wests. There would be no more points scored in the match – the Tigers running out 26-16 victors to end the Rabbitohs’ winning start to the season.

NSW Cup Round 3

v Newcastle, St Johns Oval Charlestown Sat Mar 22 3:00pm

LOSS 22-50

Late changes, Champion, Koroisau, Neale out. Toole starts center, Evans five-eighth, Areaiiti starts at prop, Jackson Williams at second row, Grevsmuhl bench and Steve Tivita bench. The North Sydney Bears went down to the Newcastle Knights by a disappointing 50-22 at St John Oval over the weekend in a result that said little about the match. With seven minutes left in the first half, the Bears led the home-side 18-4, but a succession of poor ball-control put the Knights in the box-seat to score two quick tries to bring the half-time score to 18-16. With the game in the balance after half time, the Knights slowly turned the tide on the brave Bears – battling until the 60th minute to stay in the game. But with the likes of first graders such as Chris Houston being added to the Knights line-up just before the match, the game was always going to prove tough for Norths’ cubs – who included the likes of Rabbitohs under 20’s players Cameron McInnes, Alex Johnston and Aaron Gray. Experience won out in the end as Newcastle scored four tries in 15 minutes to wrap up the match in convincing fashion – sinking the Bears to their first loss of the year after having won in round one and had the bye in round two. The loss was a tough pill to swallow for Coach Wayne Lambkin, who cited the final score-line as not being indicative of the match that took place. “It (the score) certainly doesn’t paint the right picture of the game,” said Lambkin. “But, against a side that had plenty of first grade experience, the boys showed plenty of skill and courage. Unfortunately we just made a few errors at key moments in the game that allowed them to run away with it.” But despite the loss, Lambkin sang the praises of his under 20’s contingent, including Cameron McInnes who bagged a try-scoring double. “I was exceptionally pleased with the 20’s boys – I thought Cameron was really good and probably among the best on the park,” enthused Lambkin.
