WIN 18-0
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have tonight (Monday) kept the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks scoreless in their 18-0 victory in the Shire – keeping a side scoreless for the first time in 15 years. The Rabbitohs last kept a side scoreless in round 18 of the 1999 season against the Penrith Panthers when they won 20-0. Missing Origin players Greg Inglis, Chris McQueen and Ben Te’o, the Rabbitohs turned on a brilliant defensive effort to record the historic win. Kyle Turner gave the Rabbitohs an early attacking opportunity when he charged down Cronulla’s final tackle kick attempt before regathering, but the side was unable to capitalise with points. The Rabbitohs dominated the opening exchanges in both attack and defence, but with just under 20 minutes gone in the first half, the Rabbitohs were still unable to score. Alex Johnston came close in an identical play that saw him score against the Broncos off an Adam Reynolds kick, but the young gun’s foot went over the touch-line. The Sharks looked to score after 19 minutes when Bryce Gibbs pounced on a grubber-kick into the in-goal, but the video-referee deemed that the Sharks forward was off-side. A massive tackle from Apisai Koroisau on the Sharks defence saw the ball spill loose inside their own ten metre line, with George Burgess picking up the loose ball, giving the Rabbits another chance to attack. The result was immediate, with Sam Burgess getting on the outside of the Cronulla defence and slamming the ball down to open the scoring right on the 20 minute mark. Adam Reynolds converted 15 metres in from touch to make it 6-0. With the clock winding down in the first half, the Sharks mounted pressure on the Rabbitohs in consecutive sets, but the Rabbits were about to turn defence into attack. With a cross-field kick going to the wing, the Sharks knocked on in the contest with Alex Johnston picking the ball up before racing 100 metres to seemingly score. The video referee ruled against the try, bringing the ball back to the 20 metre mark for a Rabbitohs re-start. From the ensuing set, Souths were awarded a penalty right in front of the sticks for Adam Reynolds to boot the side a further two points ahead – the team’s going into the sheds with the Rabbitohs leading 8-0. On the resumption, the two sides traded blows and opportunities with the likes of Nathan Merritt proving vital in diffusing a blitzkrieg of high-balls. Alex Johnston also managed create plenty of pressure for the home-side – forcing a mistake from the Sharks as they looked certain to score from a break. Just minutes later, a Joel Reddy offload allowed Dylan Walker to break through, drawing the last line Cronulla defence before passing on to fellow centre Kirisome Auva’a who streaked the remaining 40 metres to score. Adam Reynolds missed the conversion leaving the score at 12-0 with 23 minutes remaining. Cameron McInnes then added his name to the score-sheet with a sneaky run from dummy-half – catching the Sharks defence napping to score under the posts. Reynolds made no mistake with the conversion to make it 18-0. With the clock winding down, Cronulla threw everything they had at the men in red and green, receiving a string of back to back sets. But the Rabbitohs defence held strong to grab the 18-0 win.

NYC Cup Round 11

WIN 28-26
Late Changes Souths were 1-17. Kavanagh, Khory and Preece dropped off the bench. The South Sydney Rabbitohs have hung on to beat the Cronulla Sharks by 28-26 at Cronulla this evening (Monday) in a see-sawing affair. Both forward packs ripped in to each other with hurricane fury throughout the match, resulting in some massive breaks up the middle. Just four minutes into the match, the Sharks were on the front foot, forcing the Rabbitohs in-goal before running a simple draw and pass play for winger Joshua Addo-Carr to score out wide. The Rabbitohs hit back though through back-rower Ede Syme, who punched a hole through the Cronulla defence 20 metres out from the try-line before beating the fullback to cross right next to the posts. Irae Simone converted to give Souths the lead 6-4. Souths continued to pressure the Cronulla line with waves of slick attack. But it was the nuggetty Aaron Booth who surprised the Sharks defence when the hooker went himself from dummy-half to plant the ball over the line. Simone sprayed the conversion attempt leaving the score in the Rabbitohs’ favour 10-4. Just under half-way through the first stanza, the Rabbitohs began to pick up steam with the forwards making good yards up the middle. The red and greens skilfully drew in the Cronulla defence before halfback Wallace Tangiiti kicked for the wing of Tom Hughes, who caught the ball on the fly before scoring in the corner. Simone made no mistake with the conversion to make it 16-4. Fa’amanu Brown hit back for Cronulla not long after by stepping inside the Rabbitohs defence from close range. Valentine Holmes converted to make the difference a converted try before Brown ran over for a second off the ensuing in near identical fashion. Holmes again added the extras to level the scores 16 apiece to round out the first half. Five minutes into the second stanza, the Rabbitohs raced in through Irae Simone who hit the ball at speed from short-range to break the dead-lock. Simone converted his own try to make it 22-16. Fa’amanu Brown was at it again in the 60th minute, steaming onto a short-ball before crossing the stripe adjacent to the posts. Holmes converted to lock it all up again at 22-all before another try shortly after to the Sharks extended their lead to 26-22. The Rabbitohs weren’t done and dusted though, with five-eighth Brad Wall breaking through the Sharks’ defence before racing 25 metres to score next to the posts, levelling it up again at 26 apiece. Simone’s kick re-took the lead for the Rabbitohs at 28-26 to clinch victory.

NSW Cup Round 12
v NZ Warriors, NSO Sat May 24 3:00pm
LOSS 22-36
Late changes Tom Burgess and Picker were out. Hyland started hooker, Lupi prop, Roberts second row, Low lock, J.Garlick and J.Williams started on the bench. The New Zealand Warriors have made it two wins in as many weeks north of the Harbour Bridge, knocking off the North Sydney Bears 36-22 at North Sydney Oval. Despite losing David Fusitua and Tuimoala Lolohea to first grade, the Warriors attack looked sharp, with Sam Cook and Mason Lino laying the platform for a dominant performance by the New Zealand forwards. Having just held the Bears out for back to back sets on their own line, the Warriors turned defence into attack, with Agnatius Paasi using his footwork to get around some sloppy marker defence, before putting away an unmarked Carlos Tuimavave for his first try of the afternoon. From directly in front, Mason Lino had no issues with the conversion, putting the visitors up 6-0 after 14 minutes. North Sydney hit back just three minutes later, when a series of offloads had the Warriors defence in all sorts of trouble, before a Jordan Worboys flick pass to a waiting Duncan Lowe led to points. Kurt Aldridge made light work of the conversion, locking up the scores at 6 a piece after 18 minutes. The Warriors capitalised on possession late in the first half, with converted tries to Sam Cook and Agnatius Paasi in the space of eight minutes, giving New Zealand a 24-6 lead with four minutes remaining in the half. Just as the half time siren was about to sound, North Sydney halfback Jordan Worboys threw a magic cut-out pass to Curtis Johnston out wide, with the winger somehow able to get the ball down despite heavy pressure from the Warriors, snapping the corner post in the process. Aldridge slotted the conversion from the sideline, sending the Warriors into half time with a 24-12 lead. North Sydney came out firing in the second half, scoring the opening two tries, with one each to Curtis Johnston and Chris Grevsmuhl, leaving the Bears just two points in arrears at 24-22 with 15 minutes remaining. Unfortunately for the Bears faithful, that would be the last opportunity they would have to wave their banners, with errors gifting the Warriors two tries in the final 10 minutes. Charlie Gubb was the next to score for New Zealand, with the menacing front rower capping off a terrific second half, shrugging off Norths fullback Kane Morgan with ease to score his first try of the year. Once again Mason Lino made the conversion, to give the Warriors a 30-22 lead with eight minutes remaining. To further add insult to injury, New Zealand managed to cross for a try with only seconds remaining in the game, with Sam Cook capping off a stellar game with a double, before Lino kept his perfect record with the boot intact.
