WIN 29-10
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have slayed the Dragons by 29-10 at ANZ Stadium tonight (Monday) in the Rabbitohs’ seventh win of the season – their second win over the Dragons in 2014 to place the red and greens fourth on the NRL Ladder. The match saw the successful return of Issac Luke at hooker, with the Kiwi international making his presence felt with his opportunism from dummy-half. Both sides traded blows in the opening 10 minutes with neither able to convert their opportunities to points. Neither side was taking chances though – both kicking for the side-lines to control the pace of the game. But a final tackle kick from Benji Marshall that went out on the full placed the Rabbitohs within striking distance of the line for the best opportunity in the game yet, but the Dragons defence held strong. With 18 minutes gone, George Burgess looked to break the dead-lock by carrying two defenders toward the try-line before reaching out. But the video referee deemed that Burgess lost the ball short of the line. In his first game back from a lengthy injury, Issac Luke’s enthusiasm from dummy-half sparked an opportunity by getting a roll on before the Kiwi international threw the ball out the back-line for Joel Reddy to eventually draw first blood out wide. Adam Reynolds converted to make it 6-0 – the halfback racking up his 500th career point. The Dragons almost hit back immediately through Peter Mata’utia who dived on a kick into the in-goal to seemingly score. But the Dragons’ winger was unable to ground the ball in the in-goal. Sam Burgess extended the Rabbitohs’ lead when he went in search of the ball out in the centres – the big Englishman carrying three defenders over the try-line before Reynolds added the extras with 10 minutes in the half remaining. Joel Reddy then grabbed his second of the night when Issac Luke again set off a slick back-line movement that drew in the Dragons defence, allowing Greg Inglis to draw and pass to an unmarked Reddy out wide. Reynolds made it three from three with the boot to make it 18-0 with five minutes until the break. Gerard Beale finally opened the Dragons’ account with one minute left on the clock when he raced over untouched in the corner. Gareth Widdop failed to convert, taking both teams to the break with the Rabbitohs leading 18-4. A sloppy start to the second half saw both teams drop ball in the dewy conditions. But it was Souths who looked to have the upper-hand – forcing the Dragons deep in their own territory as the sides traded blows in the opening 22 minutes of the second half. With the red and greens pressuring the Saints line, Adam Reynolds put boot to ball before regathering off a ricochet of a Dragons defender and scoring out wide to extend his sides lead, making it 22-4 with 17 minutes remaining. On the re-start, the Dragons’ Mitch Rein was placed on report for a dangerous tackle on Thomas Burgess, allowing Souths to kick themselves into attacking position. Dylan Walker took full advantage of the opportunity by muscling his way over the stripe out wide. Walker converted his own try from just inside the touch-line to make it 28-4. The Dragons went over for their first of the second half through Tyson Frizell on the back of a Benji Marshall chip. Gareth Widdop converted to make it 28-10 with ten minutes remaining. With the clock winding down, Adam Reynolds booted a low trajectory field goal from 25 metres out to make the score an unusual 29-10 in favour of the men in red and green.

NYC Cup Round 12
4:45pm
LOSS 24-36
Late Changes Cottrell out, Makorare-Boyce started fullback, Simone center, McInnes hooker and Booth on the bench. The South Sydney Rabbitohs’ under 20s NYC side has gone down to the St George Illawarra Dragons by 36-24 at ANZ Stadium in round 12. The Dragons opened the scoring inside the first five minutes when front rower Dylan Lauri steamed onto a short-ball at close-range to score under the sticks. Halfback Adam Clune converted to give the Dragons an early six point lead. Souths hit back just five minutes later when a cross-field kick from Wallace Tangiiti found winger, Tom Hughes on the fly to score in the corner. Irae Simone was unable to convert, leaving the score at 6-4. The Rabbitohs went on the front foot, attacking the Dragons line with purpose. But it was big prop PJ Lose who showed the most intent by powering over the Saints defence to score. Simone made no mistake to make it 10-6 with 15 minutes gone. The two sides traded blows until 15 minutes before half-time when Dragons replacement winger Rowland Kotobalau scored in the corner, with Hayden McCrae converting to re-take the lead at 12-10. Dragons fullback Matt Duffy backed the effort up mere minutes later when he raced through some disjointed Rabbitohs defence to score adjacent to the posts. McCrae converted to make it 18-10 in the Dragons’ favour. Rabbitohs hooker Aaron Booth took matters into his own hands when he dived over from dummy half under the sticks. Simone added the extras to make it a two point ball-game at 18-16, before Dragons front-rower Addin Fonua-Blake scored one of his own. McCrae converted to take the teams to the break with Saints leading 24-16. On the resumption, Cameron McInnes celebrated his return to the NYC by scoring a try from dummy-half in characteristic fashion to make it 24-20. The Dragons hit back again though with Fonua-Blake bagging his second of the night by showing great strength to power over out wide. McCrae converted to make it 30-20. With just under seven minutes in the match remaining, the Dragons were back in through winger William Tom, who raced 30 metres to cross in the corner. McCrae again added the extras to make it 36-20 in the Dragons’ favour. With the clock winding down, the Rabbitohs scored a consolation try through Irae Simone to make the final score 36-24 in the Dragons’ favour to round out the match.

NSW Cup Round 13
v Cronulla, Ende Sat May 31 3:00pm
LOSS 18-25
Late changes Merritt, Tuqiri, Goodwin, L.Burgess, Lowe were out. Morgan started fullback, Roberts center, Uluibau center, Lupi prop, Low lock, J.Williams and Tavita were added to the bench. Cronulla Sharks picked up an important 25-18 against the North Sydney Bears at home to keep them inside the top eight. With both sides heavily depleted due to injuries and NRL commitments, the Sharks started strong early, taking the game away from the Bears. Early tries through Suliasi Vunivalu, Valentine Holmes and Penani Manumalealii had the Cronulla side up 18-0 after just 12 minutes. With the first 20 minutes played predominantly in North Sydney’s half, the Bears took their first shot at the Sharks line with open arms when Joe Picker busted over to make the score 18-6. The rest of the half flowed back and forth with each side having the chance to claim points however neither could capitalize going into the break still at 18-6. In the second half the Bears came out of the gates strongly creating pressure with repeat sets on the Sharks line. The pressure Bears applied paid off with a try to Jordan Worboys after a show-and-go to put the Bears in the hunt at 18-12 after 49 minutes. North Sydney, looked likely to lock things up having a run of possession but errors let them down and Cronulla took advantage of this with Tim Robinson breaking the line and getting the ball to lock Dean Britt to touchdown under the post for a 24-12 lead in the 61st minute. The Bears weren’t done with however, camping on the Sharks line for Mark O’Dare to get over in the 67th minute to make the score 24-18. The final 10 minutes saw the Sharks defending their line with North Sydney looking likely to cross however, getting the ball into the Bears half Cronulla number seven Manumalealii, slotted a field goal to take the game away and give his side a 25-18 win. For Cronulla half Manumalealii was the difference leading his side in a commanding fashion, while Valentine Holmes looked a threat with the ball and Junior Roqica ran hard all match. While the Bears half Worboys had a strong showing, as did Nathaniel Neale and winger Mark O’Dare tried hard all game.
