WIN 34-18
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have recorded a gutsy victory against the New Zealand Warriors in Perth this evening (Saturday), defying a strong Warriors line-up and a mounting injury toll to take the points by 34-18. In a match that will be remembered for the display of sheer guts and determination from the Rabbitohs perspective – as well as the ground record 20,267 crowd – the Rabbitohs lost the services of Greg Inglis and Bryson Goodwin for the night, while also momentarily losing Jason Clark and George Burgess, forcing a re-shuffle in Michael Maguire’s side that ultimately stood to defeat the New Zealanders after the visitors led at half time. The Warriors were the first to draw blood, when winger David Fusitu’a got on the outside of the Rabbitohs’ defensive line before skilfully managing to stay within the field of play to plant the ball over the line despite the best efforts of John Sutton. From the ensuing set, Warriors front-rower Suaia Matagi broke clean through the Rabbitohs line before drawing in Greg Inglis and passing on to Shaun Johnson who raced over to score. Johnson converted his own try to make it ten points in nine minutes. A Manu Vatuvei error on a high ball inside his own 10 metres allowed the Rabbitohs their first real attacking opportunity with 15 minutes gone, but while John Sutton was valiant in his effort to power through the Warriors defensive line, his ball handling robbed him of the four points. After being outplayed in the opening stages of the match though, the Rabbitohs’ composure got them back into the match when after a string of repeat-sets on the Warriors line, Dylan Walker danced his way through from short range to open the red and green account for the night. Adam Reynolds converted to make it 10-6 in the Warriors’ favour. The Rabbitohs continued to build pressure, and with a minute and a half left in the first half, Bryson Goodwin took a kick just before the in-goal to almost score. But the Perth product’s arm was deemed to have gone out before he could plant the ball. Souths fans collectively held their breaths as Greg Inglis left the field on the ensuing set with a leg injury after the Rabbitoh’s attempted tackle on Manu Vatuvei – rounding out the first half. The Rabbitohs’ injury woes continued on the resumption, when Bryson Goodwin – who had shifted to fullback to cover the loss of Inglis – left the field after his arm was caught awkwardly in a tackle. The injury caused a major re-shuffle of the Rabbitohs’ line-up, with Chris McQueen shifting out to the wing, Kyle Turner moving into the centres and Dylan Walker to fullback. The effects of the reshuffle showed immediately when Warriors skipper Simon Mannering crossed out wide to make it 14-6. Despite the growing injury toll, Dylan Walker again danced through the Warriors defence, this time racing an extra 20 minutes and stepping to score under the posts for his second of the night. Reynolds added the extras to make it 14-12 in the Warriors’ favour. The Rabbitohs continued to gather pace, with the ensuing attacking raids allowing Kyle Turner to barge over from next to the touch-line to take the lead for the Rabbitohs for the first time in the night at 16-14. With 11 minutes left, a deft pass from Issac Luke to Dave Tyrrell put resident Superman Dave Tyrrell through for his first four-pointer of the season under the sticks. Adam Reynolds converted to make it 22-14. But anyone who thought there would be any let-up from the men in red and green were about to be proved wrong again, when the Rabbitohs went on the attack through an Adam Reynolds cross-field kick that landed in the hands of Joel Reddy who stepped through to score – all but defeating the Warriors psychologically. Reynolds made no mistake with six minutes remaining at 28-14. Dave Tyrrell then bagged a rare try-scoring double inside the last four minutes before Adam Reynolds added the extras to make it 34-14. A late try to Konrad Hurrell was too little too late for the Warriors – the Rabbitohs recording a famous victory.

NYC Cup Round 13
2:00pm, Redfern Oval
WIN 28-26
Late Changes McInnes, Gardiner, Kavanagh out. Makoare-Boyce started wing, Felila hooker, Simone on the bench. A resilient South Sydney NYC side has defeated a rampaging Warriors outfit 28-26 at the Rabbitohs’ spiritual home ground of Redfern Oval today (Saturday). With only a missed sideline conversion after the full-time siren separating the two teams, it proved difficult for either side to establish dominance for any extended period of the match. The Warriors started the game with an efficient yet aggressive mindset in attack, opening the scoring with a crisp backline movement that led to a try in the corner to winger Metia Lasati. The conversion attempt was waved away, giving the Warriors an early four point lead within four minutes. It wasn’t long before Souths found themselves defending their own line again, consistently probed by a determined Warriors pack. Some fancy footwork and quick passing led to the Warriors second try to Nathaniel Roache right beside the posts with a conversion from Mason Limo extending the Warriors lead to 10 points in 15 minutes. Early penalties and handling errors from Souths continued to give the Warriors possession within Souths territory, and they capitalised on their opportunities again with a try to Ken Maumalo. With another Limo conversion, the Warriors lead was 16 points after 20 minutes. A Warriors knock-on off the kick-off presented Souths with their first genuine attacking chance of the afternoon, when a short ball to a barnstorming Cheyne Whitelaw gave Souths their first four pointer. Wallace Tangiiti was unable to convert, leaving the score at 16-4 after 23 minutes. With the Warriors kicking out on the full, Souths were gifted possession within the Warriors half. Souths’ pressure proved too much with Wallace Tangiiti slipping through the Warriors defence for another Souths try. A conversion by Devon Makoare-Boyce cut the Warriors lead to 16-10 with ten minutes remaining in the half. In the 38th minute Souths fullback Elliot Gorman produced an impressive solo effort to beat two Warriors defenders and score out wide. Although the conversion was missed, Souths had whittled the Warriors lead to four points going into the sheds at half time. Souths didn’t take their foot off the accelerator when the second half began, forcing repeat sets on the Warriors line. A quick tap and short ball after a Warriors penalty led to a try for Souths’ PJ Los’e at the 48 minute mark. The conversion attempt was missed, however Souths now held the lead at 18-16. The Warriors gave all they had in attack, but Souths’ strong defence continued leading to Warriors handling errors and penalties. Souths maintained their dominance with a try to Clayton Williams adjacent to the posts. Irae Simone converted to extend the Rabbitohs’ lead to 24-16 after 54 minutes. With the match turning in their favour Souths attack opened up shortly afterwards with a beautiful Wallace Tangiiti chip finding Irae Simone in open space, scoring in the right corner. Although he missed converting his own try, Simone’s try further increased Souths lead to 28-16 with twenty minutes remaining. While Souths looked comfortable, the Warriors proved determined with a 70 minute try to Sam Lisone. With Mason Limo converting, Souths lead was down to six points with ten minutes to go. In a spirited final period Souths defence looked to be impenetrable, with the Warriors consistently forced backwards away from Souths’ line. Although Maumalo scored in the corner in the dying seconds of the match, the conversion they needed to tie the match went wide after the siren.

NSW Cup Round 14
v Newtown, NSO Sun Jun 8 3:00pm
LOSS 16-38
Late changes Merritt Goodwin LBurgess Picker Lowe are out. Morgan starts at fullback, Uluibau center, McInnes hooker, Areaiitti prop, Roberts second row, Hyland lock. Lupi and Tavita added to the bench. Newtown secured the Frank Hyde Shield after they defeated North Sydney 38-16 at North Sydney Oval last Sunday afternoon. The Newtown Jets started the season poorly, winning just one game in the opening nine rounds of the competition. But with a number of players coming back from injury, the Bluebags defeated the Bears early last month and have since beaten Wyong, Illawarra, Mounties and North Sydney once again. From fighting to avoid the dreaded wooden spoon, Newtown is now in the top eight while the same can't be said for the North Sydney side. The Bears sit in last place with just two wins to their credit against Wyong and Newcastle. In fact, they have won just once since March. It didn't get any better for the Bears as Newtown opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Tautau Moga latched onto an intercept and raced 80 metres to score in the corner. With a healthy crowd in attendance under cold and wet conditions, the Jets extended their lead to 10-0 when Arana Taumata produced some fancy footwork to score under the posts. Daniel Mortimer added the extras to make it 10-0 after 12 minutes. It was all too easy for the Newtown side when they went in a few minutes later when Mortimer scored under the posts. He added the extras to have the visitors ahead 16-0. The Bluebags extended their advantage to 20-0 after winger Josh Davis scored in the corner. North Sydney finally got on the board when Joe Uluibau scored but drama was to follow when Ray Moujalli was sent off for a dangerous tackle on Bears lock-forward Duncan Low. The Norths player was stretchered off the field. With the Jets down to 12-men, North Sydney replied with a try to winger Curtis Johnston in the 29th minute. And the Bears were in again when hooker Matt Hyland scored. Kurt Aldridge added the goal to make it 20-16 at the half-time break. The second half was a real arm wrestle in the tough conditions but it was the Jets that went further ahead in the 56th minute when Sio Siua Taukeiaho scored after a break from Reuben. Mortimer added the kick to push the Jets out to 26-16. With heavy rain greeting the players, Newtown was in again when Kurt Kara scored adjacent to the posts. Mortimer's conversion saw the score at 32-16 with 13 minutes remaining. It was game over in the 73rd minute when Samisoni Langi crossed in the corner.
