LOSS 10-14
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down 14-10 to the Gold Coast Titans tonight (Monday) in round 17 of the NRL at ANZ Stadium. In a game that boasted a record 24 NRL penalties, the Titans held on to defeat the home-side for what would be their first victory in six matches. Despite being bolstered by the return of Luke Keary, Dylan Walker and George Burgess, the Rabbitohs failed to pick up the two points, picking up a single try and three goals in the process. Adam Reynolds however did manage to break a record during the match, becoming the first player to score points in 69 consecutive matches. In his first game back, it didn’t take long for Luke Keary to look dangerous in his first game of the season when he hoisted a towering bomb that found Nathan Merritt on the wing. With the Titans scrambling to defend, Merritt threw the ball back inside on the ground for Keary who raced 20 metres to score. Reynolds converted to give South Sydney an early six-point lead. The Titans almost responded with a try through Paul Carter, but the video referee denied the lock on the grounds that he was held up in goal. But Souths made a point of parking the Titans inside their own half with a combination of strategic kicking and strong defence. The defence paid dividends when Kevin Gordon was taken into touch by the red and greens on the 20 metre line, gifting the Rabbitohs perfect attacking position. But Souths failed to turn the opportunity into points. The Titans began to give away penalties, with officials eventually warning the visitors to get their act together. The penalty gave Adam Reynolds an opportunity to boot the side two points further ahead from close range. The Gold Coast finally got on the board with six minutes remaining in the first half when Albert Kelly turned a ball back inside for David Mead to score. Daniel Mortimer missed the conversion, leaving the score at 8-4 to take the teams to the break. On the resumption, it was the Rabbitohs’ turn to show ill-discipline – the Titans hitting back through William Zillman who danced through the Rabbitohs’ defence. With the conversion attempt missed, it was all locked up at ANZ Stadium at eight apiece. Sam Burgess tried to spark something for the red and greens when he found a gap before passing on to Alex Johnston. But some desperate Titans defence from Mark Minichiello saw the former Rabbitohs strip the ball from Johnston just shy of the line. With the penalty count beginning to blow out, the Rabbitohs again opted for a shot at goal in front of the sticks to break the dead-lock – the Rabbitohs leading 10-8. After another six penalties in a row and the Rabbitohs throwing everything they can at the Titans defence, John Sutton looked to crash over the line for a four-pointer. But with insufficient evidence from the video referee, a try couldn’t be awarded. But it was the Gold Coast who got on the board next, with a Rabbitohs dropped ball from a towering bomb giving Kevin Gordon a four pointer on the touch-line. Gordon converted his own try to make it 14-10 in the Titans’ favour. With the clock winding down, both Nathan Merritt and Adam Reynolds looked to spark something for the home-side – Merritt making a break down the side-line before being taken in defence, while a Reynolds chip and chase nearly yielded an opportunity. But neither moment managed to yield points.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs NYC side has gone down to the Gold Coast Titans tonight (Monday) by 36-16 in round 17 of the Holden Cup competition. Three tries to the Rabbitohs weren’t enough on a night dominated by the Titans, who looked well in control from the opening whistle, despite some spirited patches from the men in red and green. The Titans were in first after just four minutes, when a back-line movement sent winger Zac Spring over in the corner to open their account for the night. Hooker Deacon Fletcher added the extras to make it 6-0 in favour of the visitors. But it would take a while before either side looked like scoring again, with the Rabbitohs doing the honours 16 minutes from half-time when late inclusion, Aaron Booth darted over from dummy half under the sticks. Irae Simone slotted the conversion from in front to level it all up at six apiece. With six minutes in the first half remaining, Titans fullback and co-captain Jahrome Hughes put in a chip over the top for himself on the 30 metre line before regathering and scoring next to sticks. Halfback Kane Elgey converted to give the Gold Coast a converted try advantage. Elgey added six more points to his personal tally when he pounced on the ball in the in-goal to extend the Titans’ lead to 18-6 going into the sheds. On the resumption, both teams exchanged blows for 10 minutes before the Rabbitohs finally got the upper hand when Irae Simone took a chip into the corner to score out wide. Simone sprayed the conversion attempt, leaving the score at 18-10. But the Titans hit back just over half way through the second stanza when Brian Kelly crossed out wide to make it 22-10. Kane Elgey converted to make it 24-10. The Gold Coast backed the effort up mere minutes later when Jaiden Hawkes took a well-timed pass on the chest to streak through, better the position and score behind the uprights. Elgey added the extras to make it 30-10. With four minutes on the clock remaining, Titans replacement Shaun Hudson dived over in the corner to make it 36-10, before the Rabbitohs’ Tom Hughes grabbed a consolation try as the final hooter sounded. Irae Simone added the extras to make the final score 36-16.

The Wentworthville Magpies have toppled last placed North Sydney Bears on Sunday at Ringrose Park, with a convincing 56-16 victory. After a physical opening exchange from both sides, Wentworthville capitalised on back-to-back penalties through front rower, Taniela Lasalo, who crossed close to the line for their first try. Lasalo was instrumental early and provided strong carries and skilful offloads. This allowed Wentworthville to isolate North Sydney's middle defenders and gain quick play-the-balls as a result. The Wenty big man was one of four Magpies to bag doubles alongside, Bureta Faraimo, Henry Raiwalui and Api Pewhairangi. Four minutes later, a left edge attacking raid from Wentworthville saw 19-year-old, Tepai Moeroa, score a try in his VB NSW Cup debut, bumping up their lead to two converted tries only eight minutes in. North Sydney managed to stem Wentworthville's flow of points, through veteran winger, Curtis Johnston and then through captain, Matt Hyland, in the set after points. With Aldridge kicking one from two, North Sydney was only trailing by two points, until Wentworthville hit back with a flurry of tries, all being converted by Hooker, Liam Foran. With the score at 30 points to 10, and a blow out on the cards, North Sydney's, Mark O'Dare, made a brave decision to leave his wing and attempt an intercept. Fortunately for the Bears this paid off, as he raced the better part of 60 metres to score. After being the victims of a high scoring first half, the Bears were still in reaching distance, trailing by only 14 at the break. They started the second half extremely poorly however, gifting Wentworthville with possession through one incomplete set after another. Wentworthville winger, Bureta Faraimo, scored the first try of the half and his second of the day nine minutes after the break. With his 16th try for the season, Faraimo passed Marika Koroibete as the VB NSW Cup's leading try scorer for 2014. The second half was all the Magpies, shutting out the Bears 26-0 on the back of smart play from Liam Foran. Foran was key in getting his forwards on the advantage line and turning around the Bears with pin-point kicking. He found the ground on every occasion and managed to force three goal line drop-outs, including one from a kick inside his own 40 metre line and another from just over halfway. To make matters worse for the Bears, second rower, Josh Toole, had to be assisted off the field by medical staff late in the match, after he injured his knee. Overall, North Sydney's head coach, Wayne Lambkin, will have a lot to address this week as they'll need to improve significantly if they want to beat a third placed Wests Tigers at North Sydney Oval on the weekend.
