WIN 50-10
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have accounted for the Newcastle Knights by 50-10 in Cairns this afternoon (Sunday) in round 21 of the NRL. An Alex Johnston hat-trick, a Kirisome Auva’a double and another brilliant four-pointer from Dylan Walker – reminiscent of his 2013 Cairns effort – were among a number of highlights played out in the humid conditions in tropical North Queensland. Both sides enjoyed opportunities on their own try-line inside the first 10 minutes of play, but neither team was able to crack the defence. But leave it to hooker Issac Luke to spark the Rabbitohs into action – the number nine making easy metres up the middle before being brought down 15 metres out. From the ensuing set, a backline movement sent Kirisome Auva’a over in the corner to open the scoring. Adam Reynolds failed to convert leaving the score at 4-0. Luke was at it again half-way through the opening stanza when he opted to attack the Knights short-side inside the 20 metre line. Luke danced through the staggered Newcastle defence before passing on to Lote Tuqiri who powered over for South Sydney’s second to make it 8-0. Thomas Burgess then got his name on the score-card with a barn-storming run from close-range before reaching out his arm to score his first four-pointer. Reynolds converted from right in front to bring the score to 14-0 in the Rabbitohs’ favour. Cairns then began to build a reputation for producing brilliant four-pointers, with a Dylan Walker try reminiscent of 2013’s try of the year being scored. Adam Reynolds’ unsuccessful chip for himself on the 30 metre line was cleaned up in uncharacteristic fashion by the returning Chris McQueen, who crossed the ball with his left foot out to Walker who scored in fine fashion. Reynolds added the extras to bring the score to 20-0. The Rabbitohs built even more momentum when Adam Reynolds kicked a booming forty-twenty. But despite the referees needing to check the effort, the Rabbitohs still managed to take full advantage when birthday boy McQueen attacked the Knights line before reaching his arm out to score. Reynolds converted to take the Rabbitohs to the sheds leading 26-0. The second stanza didn’t start well for the Knights when they gave away a penalty on just the second tackle. The Rabbitohs wasted no time in making Newcastle pay for the error when newly anointed skipper Greg Inglis streaked over thanks to some well-timed passing from Luke Keary and Jason Clark. Reynolds added the extras from out wide to make it 32-0. But a Rabbitohs mistake would change the tide momentarily, leading to Knights winger Jake Mamo getting Newcastle’s first points of the afternoon before Adam Clydsdale got the side’s second just minutes later on the back of the Rabbitohs' kick-off going out on the full. The two quick Knights tries woke up the Rabbitohs, and it was prolific try-scorer Alex Johnston who finished off a backline movement to cross the stripe before bettering the position to touch down to make it 36-10. With 19 minutes in the match remaining and the Knights attacking the Rabbitohs line, a wayward pass was picked up by Kirisome Auva’a who then passed on to an electric Alex Johnston. Johnston’s pace outgunned the whole of the Knights team – the young gun picking up his second of the afternoon. Reynolds converted to make it 42-10. Johnston then picked up his third of the afternoon when he again finished off a Rabbitohs backline movement that sent him over the stripe in the far corner. Reynolds’ conversion attempt hit the upright, leaving the score at 46-10. The Rabbitohs then racked up the half-century when Dylan Walker broke through the Newcastle defence before kicking ahead from the 40 metre line for Auva’a to grab his second, making it 50-10 with four minutes left.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs NYC side fell to the table-topping Newcastle Knights 32-18 at Redfern Oval today (Saturday). Coming off their biggest loss of the season, Newcastle were looking to establish ascendancy early. A penalty within the first minute gifted them a repeat set of six tackles and their first scoring opportunity. Taking full advantage by quickly sweeping the ball through their backline Newcastle's Bradie Smith opened the Knight's try scoring account by crashing over in the corner. While halfback Brock Lamb missed the sideline conversion, Newcastle looked strong with a four-point lead within two minutes. Although conceding an early try, the following ten minutes was all South Sydney. Souths forwards were proving up to the challenge in the early minutes, matching every Knights run with tenacious defence. The men in red and green were looking dangerous with the ball in hand also, with halfback Brad Wall putting up bombs with pin-point accuracy. Knights' fullback Jacob Gagai maintained his composure under the high ball, consistently defusing every Souths attack. Losing possession and then following up with a quick penalty did Newcastle no favours. Souths quickly capitalised with a perfect short ball sending Souths Cheyne Whitlaw under the posts. With Wallace Tangiiti converting, Souths established a 6-4 lead within ten minutes. Souths continued their push for a second try. The breakthrough came at 23 minutes when Souths second row Jack Gosiewski finished off a sweeping backline movement to score in the corner. Wallace Tangiiti converted from out wide to push Souths lead to 12-4. Six minutes later Newcastle's Lachlan Fitzgibbon provided some tidy footwork from 25 metres out to cross for Newcastle's second try and work his team back into the contest. When Brock Lamb converted, Souths' early lead had been trimmed to two points after 29 minutes of play. In the following set of six Newcastle spread the ball wide to winger Bradon Robson who streaked along the sideline and beat two Souths defenders to score the Knight's second try in as many minutes. With another conversion from Brock Lamb, Newcastle reclaimed the lead at 16-12 as the first half came to an end. Souths hopes were buoyed as play resumed when Newcastle dropped the ball off the kick-off. However Newcastle's goal line defence proved too strong and Souths failed to capitalise. Newcastle forwards Tuiala Togiatasi and Harry Pondekas were proving to be a handful for Souths defence. Pondekas continued his hard running by breaking a Souths tackle then offloading to centre Chance Peni who sprinted 40 metres for another Knights try. Brock Lamb pushed the conversion wide, leaving Newcastle with a 20-12 lead after 48 minutes. Repeating their efforts from earlier in the match Newcastle wasted no time scoring another try within two minutes. An almost identical blinding run from Bradon Robson down the Knight's left edge was finished off with a perfect pass to Bradie Smith who touched down near the posts for his second. Brock Lamb converted to push the Knights lead to 26-12. While Souths remained in the contest, Newcastle had all the momentum and possession and ten minutes later, Newcastle's Pride Robati finished off a break by scoring under the posts. Lamb converted and the Knights lead 32-12 with twenty minutes to go. Souths were given hope when Cheyne Whitlaw crossed for his second and Tangiiti converted from near the sideline, closing the gap to 32-18. However the final minutes of the contest yielded no further points from either team, and the Knights held on for a 14-point victory away from home.

Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs have handed the North Sydney Bears their tenth consecutive loss, downing the cellar dwellers 34-16 at Belmore Sports Ground. In what was a back and forth contest for most of the match, it was the Bulldogs who kicked clear in the final 20 minutes, thanks largely to a hat trick from fullback Jaline Graham. While each side had their opportunities to score in the opening quarter of the match, forward passes and penalties caused each of them to be called back. It was the home side who finally broke the stalemate in the 20th minute, with prop forward Makahesi Makatoa popping the ball up into the waiting arms of Lindon McGrady, with the halfback diving over next to the uprights, before Pat Templeman converted to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead. It took an individual piece of brilliance from Apisai Koroisau to level the score up six minutes later, with the late addition to the lineup using his footwork to open up space for winger Mark O'Dare, who ran 50 metres to score. Koroisau capped off the play with a conversion from out wide, locking the scores up at six apiece. Interchange player David Minute added to his highlight reel not long after, with the second-rower putting in a grubber kick for himself, before toeing it into the in-goal, where Jaline Graham grounded the ball to extend the Bulldogs lead to 10-6 after Templeman's conversion was waved away. It was North Sydney who hit back just after the break, with Curtis Johnston scoring on the Peter Moore Scoreboard side of the park, following an error from Canterbury at the back. Koroisau was also unable to add the extras from the sideline, once again leaving the scores level at ten all with half an hour remaining. Off the back of a break from Bulldogs second-rower Lachlan Burr, a quick play the ball opened up space out on the left edge, with Canterbury fullback Graham going over for his second of the afternoon, before Templeman converted to stretch the lead out to 16-10. Despite North Sydney having a mountain of possession down the business end of the park towards the back end of the second stanza, the Bulldogs goal line defence was just too strong, denying the Bears on several occasions, before winger Drury Low scored in the corner, pushing Canterbury's lead out to two converted tries with ten minutes remaining. A late converted try to Koroisau closed the margin to six points, setting up an exciting final five minutes, however, tries to Graham and Low in the dying stages capped off a 34-16 win for the home side. While the win will please coach Andy Patmore, the two competition points is a matter of too little too late, with the Bulldogs currently sitting ten points and a very poor for and against out of the top eight with four games remaining.
Curtis Johnston has been charged with a Grade 5 Shoulder Charge out of the match in the 71 min by the MRC after breaking a Canterbury's players jaw. This been directed directly to the judicary. Curtis has attempted to get it downgraded, but was unsuccessful and will miss 11 weeks.
