WIN 23-4
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have knocked over competition leaders, the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles, in a brutal top of the table clash by 23-4 at the Sydney Cricket Ground in front of 27,062 Members and supporters. In one of the side’s best defensive efforts of the season, the Rabbitohs continually put the Sea Eagles on the back foot throughout the match, while also managing to score some scintillating tries – notching up their fourth successive victory as a result. But it was Manly who scored first – a penalty to the visitors for Souths laying on the play the ball, allowed the Sea Eagles to attack the Rabbitohs line with Peta Hiku diving over in the corner for the visitors. Jamie Lyon’s conversion attempt fell short, leaving the score at 4-0. Two back-to-back penalties to the Rabbitohs marched the home-side up-field before a second-man play from Luke Keary allowed Kyle Turner to crash over in front of the Don Bradman stand to open Souths’ account for the night. Adam Reynolds converted from close range to take the lead at 6-4, with 16 minutes gone. With 16 and half minutes left, the Sea Eagles mounted an attack on the Rabbitohs’ line that seemed would yield the visitors points. But Lote Tuqiri would have none of it – the veteran turning back the clock by intercepting the ball before racing 60 metres before being caught. From the ensuing play, Souths threw the ball out to Kirisome Auva’a who powered his way over to the sound of the elated Rabbitohs faithful. Reynolds converted from near the touch-line to make it 12-4 in their favour. On the resumption, the Auva’a nearly did it again, this time when Greg Inglis burst through the Manly defensive line before being brought down 10 metres short. On the last tackle, Auva’a scooted from dummy-half before being brought down just millimetres short. Manly threw plenty of attack at the Rabbitohs, but the home-side’s defence held strong right until the end of the opening stanza – even making the Sea Eagles go backwards on their final set of the half. The sides went to the sheds with the Rabbitohs leading 12-4. On the resumption, both teams chanced their hands with adventurous plays, including a Lote Tuqiri chip down-field. Chris McQueen also nearly put his name on the score-card when the wide-running back-rower came within centimetres of scoring. Souths continued to bash Manly in defence on their own line, keeping them inside their own 10 metre line for much of their set. But Daly Cherry Evans changed the momentum of the game with a crucial forty-twenty that nearly resulted in points for the visitors had it not been for some desperate defence from Lote Tuqiri, whose one on one strip diffused an almost certain try. The Rabbitohs got a penalty right in front of the sticks on the last tackle following a crusher tackle from former Rabbitoh Josh Starling on Luke Keary. Souths opted to attack and gained a repeat set of six from the ensuing tackles. From the line drop-out, a well-orchestrated set-play from Souths saw Kirisome Auva’a hit a hole on the 20 metre line, before passing on to Alex Johnston who crossed for the first points of the second half just inside the touch-line. Reynolds’ conversion went across the face of the uprights leaving the Rabbits two converted tries ahead at 16-4. Some more brilliant defence from Souths saw Daly Cherry-Evans taken over the side-line to gift the Rabbitohs possession in good field position. The defence paid dividends when Sam Burgess was put through a gaping hole right in front of the sticks – the Englishman racing the remaining 15 metres to touch down in front of the Clive Churchill Grandstand. Reynolds added the extras to make it 22-4. A late Adam Reynolds field-goal scraped over the cross-bar to make the final score 23-4, sealing the Rabbitohs’ fourth straight victory.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have fought back to defeat the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles by 28-14 in the NYC at the Sydney Cricket Ground tonight (Friday). With much of the game being a stalemate, the Rabbitohs showed great composure to come away with the two competition points, despite the side having two players sin-binned in separate incidents. The Rabbitohs were the first to get on the board inside the first five minutes when winger Elliot Gorman took a cross-field kick on the chest to plant the ball down out wide. Fullback, Devon Makoare-Boyce narrowly missed the conversion, leaving the score at 4-0. Despite some solid attack from the Sea Eagles, the Rabbitohs marched straight back up the other side of the field, and by the 11th minute, Jack Gosiewski powered his way over the stripe for Souths’ second try of the evening to bring it to 8-0. The Sea Eagles hit straight back though winger, Latrell Schaumkel, who reached out just metres from the line to score a foot inside the touch-line. The sideline conversion attempt was waved away by the linesmen, leaving the score at 8-4. Late Manly inclusion, Tom Trbojevic, made his presence felt when he also managed to cross for the Sea Eagles in the corner to level the scores up at eight points apiece with 15 minutes in the first half remaining. Both sides struggled to gain an advantage as the first half wound down, but the teams would ultimately go to the sheds at eight apiece. The stalemate continued well into the second half, and despite Manly having all the ascendency early, the Rabbitohs’ goal-line defence held strong – repelling wave after wave of maroon and white attack. But the game was just about to blow up, with one player per team being sent to the sin-bin for throwing punches following an innocuous tackle on a Rabbitoh. Zane Musgrove left the pitch for the red and green’s, but far from deterring the home-side, the sin-binning sparked the Rabbitohs into action by putting pressure on the Manly line. Despite the positive work from the Rabbitohs, it was Manly who would score next, with five-eighth Will Pearsall scoring under the sticks. Luke Garner converted to make it 14-8 in the Sea Eagles’ favour. Makoare-Boyce wouldn’t have it though, with the nippy fullback coming up with a sneaky try next to the posts to bring the scores to 14 apiece with Wallace Tangiiti’s conversion. The fight-back continued when Gosiewski grabbed his second of the night, right in front of the building Rabbitohs faithful in the Clive Churchill Grandstand to break the deadlock. Tangiiti converted to make it 20-14 with 10 minutes in the match remaining. The Rabbitohs again pressed the Manly line and thanks to a massive Aaron Booth dummy at the ruck, allowed the hooker to dive over for a brilliant try from dummy-half. Tangiiti made no mistake with the conversion to make it 26-14 with four minutes left. A late scuffle saw a player from each side sent to the sin-bin, with Sam Manuleleua going to the bench for the Rabbitohs, but the penalty would ultimately go to the red and greens. Wallace Tangiiti kicked a penalty goal to bring the final score to an impressive 28-14.

Despite a promising start by the visitors, competition leaders Penrith have toppled last placed North Sydney 68-12 at Sportingbet Stadium. The Panthers opened the scoring in the third minute of play through Wes Naiqama, who found himself over in the right hand corner after a brilliant catch and flick pass by Eddie Aiono. The Bears responded with two tries of their own, both on the back of Panthers mistakes. The first in the 9th minute by hooker, Matt Hyland, who burrowed over close to the line and then in the 16th minute through Chris Grevsmuhl. From there it was all the Panthers who scored 64 points in as many minutes. Luke Capewell added to the score sheet in the 24th minute through good support play on the back of a Ryan Simpkins bust. He grabbed his second only six minutes later, with simple support play again proving effective, regaining the lead for the Panthers with the score at 16-12. The Panthers crossed over for two quick tries before the break, firstly to Tom Eisenhuth and then through Kieran Moss, with the second coming in the set after points. Both tries were converted by Tom Humble, which blew out their lead to 16 points, with the half time score at 28-12. Penrith started the second half how they finished the first, scoring three tries in five minutes through Leilani Latu, Luke Capewell and Eto Nabuli. Humble converted two of the three tries, boosting the Penrith lead to past five converted tries and shattering any hopes of a Bears comeback, with only 25 minutes remaining. Kevin Naiqama scored the easiest try of the afternoon after scooping up a Bears dropped ball from a 20 metre restart. Humble again converted bringing up the half century for the Panthers and summing up North Sydney's season. The Panthers weren't finished yet, scoring three tries in the last 10 minutes firstly to Nathan Smith who pounched on a Tom Eisenhuth grubber. On the back of a terrorising run on the Panthers left edge from Ben Murdoch-Masila, Eto Nabuli brought up his double and 15th try of the season after out pacing his opposing winger. Nabuli returned the favour to Murdoch-Masila in the 80th minute, flinging the ball back on the inside to cap off another big Penrith victory. The extras were added by Nabuli this time, leaving the final score at 68-12.
