WIN 42-16

South Sydney have defeated the Brisbane Broncos tonight by 42-16 to take provisional first on the NRL ladder in Close the Gap Round. Despite a slow start that saw the Broncos draw first blood, a composed South Sydney went on to score a convincing victory that included a hat-trick for Greg Inglis. The victory places the South Sydney side in equal-first position with the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles on 32 competition points. The night had extra special feeling for Rabbitohs forwards, Ben Lowe and Ben Te'o, who celebrated their 100th and 150th games respectively - Ben Lowe grabbing a rare conversion at the death to celebrate. A Rabbitohs mistake on halfway led to the Broncos receiving a string of back-to-back sets on the red and green line. The mistake would prove costly following a penalty, when Justin Hodges took a Ben Hunt grubber into the in-goal to open the scoring for the night adjacent to the sticks. Corey Parker added the conversion to give the Broncos a six point lead. Six minutes later though, a penalty against the Broncos yielded points for the Rabbitohs. With the red and greens attacking the Brisbane line on the last tackle, Issac Luke opted to run the short-side before linking up with Greg Inglis, who powered his way over the line to score. Adam Reynolds converted from near the touch-line to level the scores up at six apiece. From the very next set, a Sam Burgess break almost resulted in a second four-pointer to Alex Johnston, who took an offload from the Rabbitohs lock and sprint towards the try-line, only to be brought down in cover by Lachlan Maranta. With 14 minutes left in the first half, Adam Reynolds took the opportunity to be creative on the last tackle by chipping over the top on the 40 metre line for a flying Greg Inglis. Inglis proceeded to steamroll Josh Hoffman before throwing the ball back inside to Sam Burgess. But Inglis wasn’t done – backing up Sam Burgess to score a brilliant four-pointer. Adam Reynolds converted to make it 12-6. Souths were far from done in the first half – backing up the incredible effort with a try to Chris McQueen thanks to a knock-down gone awry from Justin Hodges. Reynolds made no mistake from short-range to bring the score to 18-6. Souths were at it again from the ensuing kick-off with Dylan Walker, who took off down the touch-line, before being brought down 20 metres short. But despite the missed opportunity, Lote Tuqiri would finish the set with a four-pointer before Reynolds again added the extras to all of a sudden make the score 24-6 going into the break. On the resumption, it was the Broncos who would draw first points through Sam Thaiday, who ducked through from close range to bring the score to 24-12 with Corey Parker’s conversion. The Rabbitohs muscled up in defence and managed to repel a number of waves of Bronco attack on their own line. Mercifully, Souths managed to march up-field and get a line drop-out courtesy of a Luke Keary grubber kick that was knocked-on in-goal by Maranta. The mistake paid dividends for the Rabbitohs when Adam Reynolds opted to kick towards the goal-posts and finding a flying Greg Inglis who streaked through to claim his hat-trick. Reynolds kept up his perfect night with the boot to claim his fifth conversion of the night to make it 30-12. With the clock winding down, Inglis seemed destined to make it four tries for the night after the Test representative took another kick from Reynolds, but unselfishly passed on to five-eighth Luke Keary, who touched down to make it 36-12. The Broncos grabbed a late consolation try through Jack Reed, but another four-pointer to the Rabbitohs through Kirisome Auva'a and a rare Ben Lowe conversion in his 100th match, added salt to th Broncos wounds - the Rabbitohs coming away with the points and their 14th win of the season – downing the Brisbane side 42-16.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs’ NYC side have gone to the Brisbane Broncos ny 36-32 at Redfern Oval in a nail-biter. With just under 10 minutes left, the Rabbitohs were in control of the match, but quick tries to the third placed Brisbane side put them back in the match to claim victory, despite a spirited final throw of the dice from Souths. The Broncos were first to draw blood inside the first five minutes, when centre Tom Opacic crashed over to give the Broncos a 4-0 lead. With 20 minutes in the first half gone, a Broncos line drop out put the Rabbitohs in perfect attacking position, and on the back of a brilliant pass, Tom Hughes raced the remaining 25 metres to touch down just inside the side-line. Devon Makoare-Boyce’s conversion attempt was waved away, leaving the scores locked at four apiece. The Broncos hit back within four minutes though on the back of a penalty, with Joe Ofahengaue crashing over right next to the posts. Jayden Nikorima converted to make it 10-4. Sam Manuleleua then grabbed a four-pointer of his own out wide to set up a pressure-kick for Makoare-Boyce from just inside touch. The fullback calmly slotted the conversion to level it up at 10 apiece. Rabbitohs lock, Cheyne Whitelaw, seized an opportunity from close range when his side went on the attack again just a couple of sets later – the forward powering over three Broncos defenders to take the lead for his team. Makoare-Boyce converted to make it 16-10 with just over three minutes left. With just over a minute left in the first half, Makoare-Boyce slotted a 30 metre penalty goal to take the teams to the sheds with Souths leading 18-10. On the resumption, the Rabbitohs went straight back on the attack, marching themselves up-field before throwing the ball out to Jack Gosiewski, who charged over to make it 22-10. But the momentum continued off the very next set for Souths, when Tom Hughes grabbed his second of the afternoon. Makoare-Boyce added the extras to make it 28-10. The Broncos hit back through second rower, Alex Barr, when the Rabbitohs failed wrap the big forward up over the try-line. Duncan Paia’aua converted to make it 28-16. With 20 minutes left on the clock, Jack Gosiewski came within a whisker of grabbing his second, but the pass was ruled forward. Instead, it was the Broncos who put points on the board through Jayden Berrell. Another Paia’aua conversion made it 28-22. But Tom Hughes hadn’t had enough of scoring points – the winger swan-diving over in the corner to claim his hat-trick with 14 minutes in the match remaining to make it 32-22. Kodi Nikorima narrowed the gap again for the Broncos with two tries to make it 32-30 with Paia’aua levelling the game up at 32 apiece with his conversion. But with two minutes in the matches remaining, the Broncos’ Brendon McBryde snatched the lead yo make it 36-32. With under a minute left, a short-re-start and a penalty got the Rabbitohs back on the attack in good field position. Mounties continued their quest for a top four finish with a punishing 40-0 win over North Sydney Bears at GIO Stadium Canberra on Saturday afternoon. Mounties were down on personnel after a number on their players were called into the Canberra Raiders side for their match later in the day against St George Illawarra Dragons. North Sydney however were boosted by the return of former New South Wales player Nathan Merritt, playing in the unfamiliar position of five-eight. Mounties wearing a special indigenous jersey for the 'Close The Gap' round hit the front early after fullback Jack Ahearn pounced on a kick through for a 4-0 lead after two minutes. Minutes later big centre Mosese Pangai, found the line for his first try of the afternoon and an 8-0 lead in what was shaping to be a high scoring afternoon for the Mounties. North Sydney had the bulk of the possession and were threating the Mounties line but frustratingly could not breakthrough the strong Mounties defence. As the half wore down elusive number six Joey Bond found his way through the Bears defence, streaking away for a well-deserved try and a 12-0 lead for his side. Next up winger Reece Robinson then scored one of the tries for the season after the Bears put a kick into the in-goal, Robinson brought it back quickly for a 20 metre restart. What happened next was the highlight of the match as Robinson tapped and was off, moving through North Sydney defence with ease to race 80 meters to score. Leading 18-0, Mounties started the second half the way they started the first with an early try. This time it was Shane Shackleton who barged his way, over under the post to have his side coasting at 24-0. After the try Mounties were straight back on the attack and Mosese Pangai was in again for his second and put Mounties up 28-0. Norths had opportunities to close up the gap however each attempt proved fruitless. Then speedy youngster Jeremy Hawkins who continues to look like a star of the future broke through the Bears line to go over. As the curtains drew on the match Mosese Pangai was again on the score sheet, landing a hat trick and a 40-0 win for his side.
