LOSS 10-22

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down to the North Queensland Cowboys by 22-10 at ANZ Stadium tonight (Saturday) in round 24 of the NRL. With the Cowboys’ top eight berth on the line, the visitors burst straight out of the box in the match to score four tries to two to take the two competition points. The Rabbitohs immediately found themselves under siege when Greg Inglis was taken over the side-line 10 metres out, gifting the visitor’s first crack at points. A combination of penalties and solid play earned the Cowboys four repeat sets on the Rabbitohs line, but with their defence holding strong, a high tackle eventually provided Johnathan Thurston with an opportunity to kick his team ahead from 15 metres out to take an early two nil lead with 10 minutes gone. The Cowboys backed it up not long after when Johnathan Thurston threw an inside ball to Jason Taumalolo, who darted his way through the remaining Rabbitohs defenders to pick up his side’s first try of the night, 10 metres in from touch. Thurston added the extras to make it 8-0. It was all North Queensland in the opening 20 minutes of the first half, with Kyle Feldt racing over in the corner to extend the visitors’ lead to 12-0. The Rabbitohs attacked the Cowboys line but were unable to break through. Instead, it was Feldt who would come up with points again for the visitors with just four minutes in the first half remaining. Thurston’s conversion attempt hit the up-right, taking the teams to the sheds with the Cowboys leading 16-0. On the resumption, the Rabbitohs threw everything they had at the Cowboys in the opening exchanges, marching up-field on the back of some solid forward running as well as a brace of penalties. Luke Keary nearly capped off the positive play with a four-pointer, but the video referee denied the young five-eighth, ruling the ball had gone over the dead-ball line before being grounded. Twelve minutes into the second half, Cowboys winger Antonio Winterstein finished off a well-orchestrated set-play to score just inside the touch-line. Thurston added the extras to make it 22-0. With 24 minutes in the match remaining, Dylan Walker seized an opportunity down the short-side before chipping back inside – the ball eventually ending up in the hands of Joe Picker, who crashed over for the side’s first try of the match. Adam Reynolds added the extras to make it 22-6. Souths turned back the clock with 14 minutes left by steam-rolling the Cowboys’ scrum and winning the ball against the feed – the Rabbitohs forwards putting in a mighty effort to push North Queensland off the scrum mark. Five minutes from full-time, a short-side play from close-range put Alex Johnston over the try-line for Souths’ second of the night to make it 22-10 to round out the match.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have hit back to claim a 16-4 victory over the North Queensland Cowboys tonight (Saturday) at ANZ Stadium, leading for the full 80 minutes. After faltering in the dying minutes of round 23 against the Broncos at Redfern Oval, the men in red and green put in a controlled performance that included well-orchestrated attacking plays on the fringes, as well as steely defence to account for the Cowboys. With just four minutes gone, the Rabbitohs took advantage of a Cowboys mistake to charge up-field and eventually race through via John Olive 15 metres in from touch. Devon Makoare-Boyce missed the conversion attempt to leave the score at 4-0. An arm-wrestle ensued before Olive was at it again – this time finishing off a break by running 30 metres towards the touch-line to get his second of the afternoon. Makoare-Boyce converted from the just inside the side-line to make it 10-0. Olive continued his good form by almost setting up a try for Makoare-Boyce with 10 minutes in the first half remaining on the back of another break. But the opportunity was diffused by the Cowboys on the back of some desperate defence. Despite some positive play on both sides of half-way in the dying minutes of the opening stanza, neither side was able to convert their opportunities into further points, taking the sides into the sheds with Souths leading 10-0. On the resumption, steely defence on both sides ensured that neither side would cross the stripe, taking until 13 minutes before full-time for points to be scored again in the match. Sam Manuleleua broke the point-scoring drought though when he took an inside pass to score in the corner for the Rabbitohs. Makoare-Boyce added a screamer from the side-line to make it 16-0 with 11 minutes remaining. But the Cowboys wouldn’t go home empty-handed – a short-side attacking play saw winger Hayden Crowley in the far ANZ Stadium corner to make it 16-4 to round out the match.

The Cronulla Sharks have maintained their spot inside the top eight after defeating the North Sydney Bears 32-10 at North Sydney Oval on Saturday. After a back to back sets on the Bears line, the visitors capitalised on their opportunity by crossing for the first points of the game in the 11th minute. Travis Robinson was the try scorer and recipient of a Penani Manumalealii cut-out pass. Despite a missed conversion from the sideline, the Sharks had the lead at 4-0. North Sydney hit back only five minutes later through Mark O'Dare, after a penalty on half way put the Bears in good field position. An identical decoy play and cut-out pass that saw Robinson score was used by the Bears, with the last pass coming from Kane Morgan. The conversion attempt from the sideline by Aldridge struck the post and was waved away which left the score tied at four points apiece. The next fifteen minutes by both sides were scrappy which was understandable given the conditions, but the Bears managed to literally weather the storm and cross for their second try through a chip and chase re-gather by Kurt Aldridge. Aldridge converted his own try, which were the last points of the half, leaving the score at 10-4 to the Bears at the break. The visitors scored the first points of the second half, after a North Sydney dropped ball, from a last tackle kick, was pounced on by Cronulla interchange, Jake Lawrence. The try was converted by Young Tonumaipea, which evened up the score at 10-10. Cronulla went back-to-back through Ben Hampton, who scored in the 48th minute after slicing through some ordinary right-edge defence by the Bears. Hampton collected a double in the set after points again through the Bears' inability to defuse the high ball. Tonumaipea converted the try which increased the Sharks lead to 10 points. He then added another two points to the scoreboard in the 56th minute from a penalty goal. Sharks second rower, Michael Morris, was next to cross four minutes later, through a fluent shift play conducted by Hampton and Manumalealii. The Sharks had well and truly woken up since the first half, scoring 24 unanswered points in only 20 minutes, giving them a lead of three converted tries. Although the Sharks showed good commitment in defence, the Bears found it difficult completing sets, let alone stringing together any threatening attacking plays. The boys from the Shire sealed the second half blow-out in the 77th minute through Ben Hampton, who brought up his hat-trick.

Jackson Garlick was placed on report but no further action was taken by the MRC.

Joe Uluibau was later charegd by the MRC with a Grade 1 Shoulder Charge in the 58th min. Base penalty is 150 points. He has taken the early please but will miss the final game of the season with 12 carry over points.
