WIN 21-14
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have survived a Bulldogs onslaught to record a 21-14 victory that has increased the side’s chances of finishing the regular season in the top four, while also taking the Special Olympics Cup in the process. The Bulldogs made their intentions clear from the opening minutes with an aggressive start that bore all the hallmarks of a traditional ‘softening-up period’ – Michael Ennis leading the way by getting under the skin of the Rabbitohs forwards with some characteristic niggle. Just eight minutes in, Ennis’ niggling bore fruit as he wrestled with Issac Luke as the Rabbitohs attacked the Bulldogs line. Luke struggled to get up and landed a boot in Ennis’s face. Luke was place on report for the incident, but the repercussions didn’t stop there. From the ensuing set, Mitch Brown managed to open the scoring out wide, with Trent Hodkinson adding the extras from near the touch-line. The Bulldogs continued to apply pressure while was Ennis repeatedly warned by referees for indiscretions in the play the ball. With the Rabbitohs looking unlikely to score thanks to the Dogs controlling the ruck, Souths finally managed to manufacture points from close range when Luke Keary turned a ball back inside to Sam Burgess who crossed the stripe. Adam Reynolds converted to square it up at six apiece. A South Sydney mistake gifted the Bulldogs possession inside the Rabbitohs half, and it was Ennis who would capitalise when the hooker charged over the stripe despite gallant defensive efforts to keep the ball from touching down. Hodkinson converted to make it 12-6 to round out the first half. On the resumption, Canterbury looked to pick up where they left off by taking Alex Johnston over the touch-line. But it was the Rabbitohs who would level the scores thanks to a jink, step and pass off the ground from Luke Keary to Sam Burgess, who crashed over for his second in front of the sticks. Reynolds added the extras to tie the game up again, this time at 12 apiece with 3 minutes in the second half gone. A penalty to the Bulldogs within kicking distance allowed Hodkinson to kick his team two points ahead, making it 14-12 as Sam Burgess went up the tunnel owing to injury. The niggle then continued through Ennis, and Adam Reynolds found himself on report for a dangerous tackle as a result with just over 20 minutes in the match remaining – the referee this time threatening Ennis with time in the bin if the indiscretions continued. With the match winding down, the Rabbitohs threw everything they had at the Bulldogs in search of points and they eventually came through an unmarked Lote Tuqiri, who took a long pass from Adam Reynolds to score in the far corner to take the lead for the first time in the match. Reynolds made no mistake from the touch-line to make it 18-14. A penalty to Souths for an offside 33 metres out with four minutes left, provided an opportunity for Reynolds to boot the red and greens a further two points ahead. Reynolds made no mistake to make the difference a converted try with three minutes remaining. A long-range late field-goal from Adam Reynolds put the result beyond doubt – the Rabbitohs taking the match by 21-14.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have taken another step towards qualifying for the Holden Cup finals series in 2014, scoring a solid 36-24 victory over the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at Campbelltown Sports Stadium today (Saturday). The Bulldogs were reduced to 11 men at one stage, with the Rabbitohs making the most of the open spaces to forge an unassailable lead midway through the second half. The Bulldogs were the first to score in the fifth minute of play when winger Marcelo Montoya crossed in the left hand corner on the back of a couple of piggy-back penalties. Brad Keighran converted from out wide to give the home side a six-nil lead. The Rabbitohs responded almost immediately when halfback Brad Wall spun out of a tackle to score on the left hand side. The Rabbitohs had been pressuring the Bulldogs’ line and that paid dividends, taking the scoreline to six-four in favour of Canterbury-Bankstown. The Rabbitohs scored again three minutes later when centre John Olive put prop Ofa Felila through a hole, charging 15 metres to score. The conversion was missed, taking the scoreline to eight-six in favour of South Sydney. The Rabbitohs were the next to score when second rower Tulsa Saumamao scored in the 31st minute of play. A quality short ball from Wallace Tangiiti put Saumamao through who had to beat the fullback to score. Tangiiti converted to give the Rabbitohs a 14-6 lead. The ‘Dogs scored their second try through Montoya again, this time scooting around the in-goal area to make the conversion attempt easier for his kicker. Brendan Cox converted to take the scores to 14-12 at the half time break. The Rabbitohs looked to be doing it fairly easy when they could hang on to the ball, but poor handling thwarted a number of scoring chances for the visitors. The Bulldogs were very ill-disciplined, giving away many penalties and having front rower Herman Ese’ese sent to the sin bin for ten minutes for dissent towards the referee, but they managed to finish the half within two points of their more-fancied opponents. The Bulldogs snatched the lead in the opening minutes of the second half when Dujuan Manuel-Liolevave scored in the right corner. Cox converted from the eastern touchline to take the lead 18 points to 14 after 46 minutes. The Bulldogs were reduced to 12 men in the 52nd minute of the game after five-eighth Robbie Kamoto up-ended a Rabbitohs’ ball runner into an extremely dangerous position and was sent from the field by the referee. Halfback Guy Hamilton would also spend ten minutes in the sin bin for a professional foul from the 58th minute of play. The Rabbitohs made the most of the 11-man Bulldogs side, crossing for three tries in the ten minute period. In the 59th minute, Tulsa Saumamao crossed for his second try to the left of the posts, with Wallace Tangiiti’s conversion giving the Rabbitohs a 20-18 lead. Two minutes later, winger Sam Manuleleua took the ball from the kick off and raced the length of the field up the right hand touchline to score a remarkable try. Tangiiti converted establishing an eight-point advantage. Three minutes later, prop Eden Syme would scoop up a Tangiiti grubber kick into the in-goal to score, and Tangiiti converted to give the Rabbitohs a 32-18 lead after 65 minutes of play. The Bulldogs struck back through hooker Alex Sorge who dived over from dummy half nine minutes short of full time. Keighran’s conversion reduced the deficit to eight points. The Rabbitohs scored the final try of the match in the 78th minute when a long ball from Brad Wall found John Olive 40 metres out from his own line. Olive turned the defence inside out and then fired up the afterburners to scoot 60 metres to score in the left hand corner to take the final scoreline to 36-24 in favour of South Sydney. The Rabbitohs worked hard throughout the 80 minutes, led by Cheyne Whitelaw in the forwards. Manuleleua and Olive looked dangerous in the backs, especially when given a bit of space due to the send offs for the Bulldogs. The ‘Dogs big forwards gave the Rabbitohs some headaches, but the Rabbitohs turned in an electrifying second half to score an important victory in terms of qualifying for the Holden Cup finals series.

NSW Cup Round 26

LOSS 12-48

The Vodafone Warriors have snuck into the NSW Cup top eight following today's must-win 25th round clash against the North Sydney Bears at Mt Smart Stadium. Second-rower Agnatius Paasi scored a hat-trick in the eight try rout of the last-placed Bears to snap a four-game losing streak for the home side. The match got off to an inauspicious start when North Sydney scored a converted try to halfback Blake Nichols before the Vodafone Warriors had touched the ball. The Vodafone Warriors got on the board in the 15th minute when their NRL players Feleti Mateo and Chad Townsend combined to put Paasi over for his first try. Townsend's conversion locked up the scores 6-6. The same movement produced Paasi's second try in the 25th minute to make it 12-6 following Townsend's conversion. The lead sparked some much needed energy for the Vodafone Warriors after a lack-lustre opening quarter. A strong run by Paasi earned a penalty and in the ensuing set, captain Steve Waetford off-loaded near the line for David Bhana to dive over and Townsend's boot made it 18-6 at halftime. It was one-way traffic in the second half as the Warriors piled on tries to Abraham Papalii, Bhana, Albert Vete and Mateo in third quarter, Townsend converting all four to make it 42-6. North Sydney got on the board again in the 72nd minute when prop Nathaniel Neal spun his way to a try which Arlidge converted. Paasi claimed his hat-trick to close out the scoring with Townsend maintaining his perfect record for 48-12.
