Rabbitohs Flag Flys Over Government House

4th March 2015

The red and green of South Sydney was flown at Government House in Sydney this week for the very first time, following the presentation of a one of a kind South Sydney Rabbitohs flag to Governor of New South Wales, His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret'd) and his wife, Mrs Linda Hurley. The presentation, attended by Rabbitohs officials including; Chairman Nicholas Pappas, CEO John Lee, CCO Shannon Donato and Head Coach Michael Maguire, saw the flag presented to the Governor and Mrs Hurley before being flown in pride of place alongside the Australian flag, NSW flag and the Aboriginal flag of Australia in a sign of the esteem with which the Club, it’s colours and its mission both on and off the field are held. Just one photo of the unique event was captured for posterity, with the image set to be framed along with the flag, signed by His Excellency and donated to Rabbitohs charity, Souths Cares. The historic image along with the signed flag will be auctioned at a later date to help raise money for Souths Cares – an independent not-for-profit public benevolent institution, established to support the disadvantaged, marginalised and indigenous youth in the South Sydney region and their families, with a specific focus on education, training, health and employment. Rabbitohs CEO, John Lee, was proud to be present at the historic event in one of his first public actions since assuming his role – the new CEO hailing the moment as another proud moment in the Club’s 107 year history. “This is another wonderful moment in the history of South Sydney,” said Mr Lee. “South Sydney is far more than just a Rugby League club. It’s a community asset that not only has cultural significance, but has the far-reaching power to inspire. “In Rugby League’s Australian Centenary in 2008, we were awarded Iconic Status by the National Trust of Australia (NSW) for the value of the Rabbitohs to the community and their important contribution to the spirit of sport.’ “We have since gone on to receive the keys to both Randwick and the City of Sydney following our 2014 Premiership victory, and to see this unique Rabbitohs flag flying alongside the Australian, NSW and Aboriginal flag’s today only further solidifies that sentiment.
