WIN 34-26
The Rabbitohs have defeated the Sydney Roosters by 34-26 this evening (Sunday) in an incredibly tight contest played out in front of 27,289 Members and supporters at ANZ Stadium – opening the Club’s home season with victory over their arch-rivals. A solid start to the game by the red and greens was countered by some dominant Roosters attack. But a combination of patience, resilience and nous, saw the Rabbitohs fight back from a 16- 12 half-time deficit to come away with a brilliant win. Five minutes into the match, a brilliant set-play consisting of reverse inside balls from Glenn Stewart and Luke Keary, saw Dylan Walker burst through the middle before stretching out to plant the ball down over the line, opening up the side’s home-season account for 2015 right next to the posts. Adam Reynolds converted to give the Rabbits an early 6-0 lead. The Roosters looked dangerous in response, and with Souths back-pedaling close to the line, Mitchell Pearce put in an attacking kick that looked certain to achieve a repeat set for the Tricolours. But the Chooks hadn’t banked on the talents of Greg Inglis – the Souths skipper not only managing to take the ball back into the field of play, but also saw him break through the line before passing on to a flying Alex Johnston. Johnston raced 65 metres to finish what was a near 110 metre effort. Reynolds added the extras to make it 12-0. As the Rabbitohs continued to assert their dominance, Reynolds copped an accidental knee to the head that saw the halfback go up the tunnel for a concussion test. The Roosters took advantage immediately by scoring a try through winger Daniel Tupou, despite a gallant defensive effort from Inglis. Maloney missed the conversion leaving the score at 12-4 with 17 minutes left in the first half. The Tricolours were buoyed by the effort, attacking again, this time through a massive torpedo bomb from James Maloney on the last tackle. Joel Reddy couldn’t get under the pill with the winger allowing the ball to bounce before Michael Jennings ended up with the ball to score. Maloney made no mistake this time to make it a two-point ball-game at 12-10. Jennings was at it again a few minutes later when the Roosters managed to jolt the ball from Issac Luke’s hands for the Test flyer to swoop and race 45 metres to score. Maloney converted short-range to make it 16-12 with 12 minutes in the opening stanza remaining. With the first half winding down, the Rabbitohs were handed a let-off when the Roosters bombed a certain try before coming within a whisker of another of their own at the other end of the field courtesy of Walker. The visitors finished off the first half with the ascendency though, going to the sheds leading 16-12. The second half started poorly for the red and greens after Adam Reynolds sailed his final-tackle kick over the touch-line on the full, gifting field position to the Roosters. After another dangerous attacking raid, a repeat-set resulted in Dylan Napa grabbing a barge-over try. Maloney again added the extras to make it 22-12. Souths needed something to stay in the game, and it finally came half-way through the second half through George Burgess, who ducked under the defensive line at short range to plant the ball down. Reynolds converted to make it 22-18. Reynolds backed the effort up on the very next set when he kicked a booming forty-twenty to put his side in prime attacking position. Burgess nearly grabbed his second in as many minutes, but the Englishman couldn’t hold onto the ball over the line amid a flurry of Roosters defenders. The Roosters would be next to score though when Shaun Kenny-Dowall finished off a back-line movement that saw the Kiwi international race over in the corner to make it 26-18. Luke Keary provided some spark for the red and greens when he broke clean through the Roosters defence on the 40 metre line before drawing in Tuivasa-Sheck and passing on to Alex Johnston, who strolled over for his second of the afternoon. Reynolds added the extras from right in front to make it 26-24 in favour of the Roosters with 18 minutes remaining. Ten minutes from full-time, in a show of strength and resilience from Reynolds, the halfback threw off multiple Roosters defenders including the larger Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, before linking up with Joel Reddy. Reddy raced over to score a crucial try to make it 28-26 in favour of the red and greens. With just two points separating the sides, tension was rising, but the Rabbitohs would have the final say in the match when Issac Luke burst over for the final try of the match to sink the Chooks by 34-26 with Reynolds’ conversion

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 2
v Sydney Roosters, 1:45pm
WIN 24-22
Late Changes Timoteo, McCudden and O'Donnell dropped off the bench.
The South Sydney Rabbitohs’ NYC side have stolen victory from the Roosters’ grasp in the final minute of the match to the tune of 24-22 in a see-sawing affair at ANZ Stadium. The lead changed hands on many occasions during the match, with the kicking of Jordie Hedges ultimately proving to be the difference with his four conversions. A Roosters mistake in the first set of the game gifted the Rabbitohs first meaningful use of the ball on the 30 metre line, but equally poor handling by the home-side undid the opportunity. The red and greens would atone just minutes later though, when a strong attacking raid a few sets later saw lock-forward Eden Syme crash over from short range to claim first points. Jordie Hedges converted from right in front to give the Rabbitohs an early six-point lead. The Roosters hit straight back with a long-range effort from winger, Joseph Manu, who raced 40 metres down the touch-line to open his side’s account for the afternoon out wide. Jackson Hastings nailed the conversion to equalise. Manu was at it again down his flank not long afterwards when he raced through in similar fashion to his first try – Hastings again adding the conversion to make 12-6. An arm-wrestle ensued in a dead-lock that wouldn’t be broken until two minutes before half-time when Rabbitohs hooker Aaron Booth dived over from dummy-half, before Hedges added the extras to equalise the match for the second time as the teams went into the sheds. On the resumption, Roosters winger Manu went in to complete his hat-trick eight minutes in, breaking the deadlock to make it 16-12 in favour of the Tricolours. Thirteen minutes from full-time, the Rabbitohs went on the attack and came up trumps through Liam Coleman, who took a well-timed pass to break into the open before racing 25 metres to touch down right next to the posts. Hedges successfully added the extras to re-take the lead at 18-16 with 12 minutes remaining. The Roosters his back minutes later through Paul Momirovski to re-take the lead – the centre converting his own try to make it 22-18 with six minutes on the clock. With the clock down to the last minute, Jordie Hedges conjured a last gasp try to equalise before converting it himself to seal the victory by 24-22.

The North Sydney Bears have gone down to the defending Premiers of the NSW Cup the Penrith Panthers by 38-6 in Bathurst this afternoon (Saturday). Rabbitoh Cheyne Whitelaw was the only North Sydney try-scorer in the seven tries to one victory by the defending Premiers. Just five minutes in, Norths went in for the first of the afternoon courtesy of Cheyne Whitelaw, who took an inside-ball on a lateral run to score. Nikko Roberts converted to make it 6-0 early. Penrith began to muscle up in defence in the ensuing 20 minutes with Panthers flying out of the line at will to shut down the Bears’ attack. The defence eventually paid dividends when Norths’ Scott Sorensen dropped the ball in tackle to gift the Panthers good field position. Panthers winger Eddie Aiono would be the ultimate beneficiary when he finished off a back-line movement from the ensuing set to score in the corner. Rabbitohs Premiership winner, Apisai Koroisau – now a Panther – came close with his conversion attempt, but hit the upright to leave the score at 6-4. But mere minutes later, the Panthers were in again to take the lead through a rampaging Leilani Latu, who monstered the Bears defence to score from close range. Koroisau made no mistake with his second attempt to make it 10-6 in Penrith’s favour. Just before half-time, Penrith went in again this time through five-eighth Isaac John, who danced through the Bears defence to extend the side’s lead. Koroisau converted to make the half-time score 16-6. Despite a positive start in the second half from the Bears, after just three minutes the Panthers were in again courtesy of some strong running from Waqa Blake, who powered his way over in the corner. Koroisau nailed the sideline conversion to blow the score out to 22-6. The points began to come easy for the Panthers on the back of some brilliant passing from Isaac John, who sent winger Christian Chricton over in the corner. Koroisau’s continued his brilliant day with the boot by again converting from the touchline to make it 28-6. With the clock winding down, Koroisau finished off a 70 metre movement that went through a range of Panthers hands to score under the sticks. The hooker converted to make the score 34-6. In the final minute of the match, Waqa Blake raced over for his second of the afternoon to round out the match 38-6.
Nathan Brown has been placed On-Report for a dangerous chicken wing contact in the 45th minute. He has subsequently been charged with a Grade 1 Dangerous contact and has taken the early plea and will not miss any matches with 90 carryover points.
