WIN 20-6
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have claimed their third victory of the season, downing the Wests Tigers by 20-6 in front of 23,211 Members and supporters. A two-try effort from a courageous Dylan Walker – who played the majority of the match with limited use of one of his hands – helped to inspire the red and greens to a gritty victory. But the Tigers didn’t go down easily, testing the Rabbitohs throughout the match. The game seemed to start poorly for the red and greens when a bomb was diffused by Joel Reddy, but was then stripped of the ball leading to Pat Richards racing over to score. But the video referee ruled against the try. The Tigers continued to look dangerous with the ball in hand when Kevin Naiqama tested the Rabbitohs on the opposite flank – the winger narrowly missing the chance to score. In a low-scoring affair, Souths were their own worst enemy throughout the opening stanza, with a myriad of handling errors hampering the side’s efforts. With 10 minutes left in the first half, Robbie Farah finally broke the dead-lock when his own kick from dummy-half rebounded back into his own hands, allowing the hooker to score under the sticks. Pat Richards added the extras to give Wests the lead. Souths hit back straight away four minutes from the break when a back-line movement saw Greg Inglis slip a perfectly-timed ball to Alex Johnston who raced the remaining 15 metres to score the side’s opening points of the match. Reynolds nailed the touchline conversion to equalise. The Rabbitohs refused to go to the sheds with just the one try though – Adam Reynolds needling a well-weighted kick into the in-goal for a flying Dylan Walker to score despite being in obvious discomfort thanks to a hand injury. Reynolds failed to convert, taking the teams to the sheds with Souths leading 10-6. Despite a handful of mistakes to start off the second stanza, the Rabbitohs built strongly before mounting a magical set-play that included a wrap-around from Glenn Stewart before culminating in Greg Inglis going over to score. Reynolds added the extras from out wide to take the score to 16-6. Martin Taupau incurred the wrath of the Rabbitohs faithful after he pushed Adam Reynolds to the ground in an unprovoked off the ball incident that had the Souths halfback clutching at his shoulder. Souths forwards, led by Issac Luke, got their revenge on Tapau close to the line when they hit the lock-forward in a hard tackle before he spilt the ball. The battle continued into the next tackle when Issac Luke lost the ball after being tackled by Tapau, but the referee awarded the men in red and green a penalty for swinging. Wests would ultimately survive the raid. With five minutes in the clash remaining, Dylan Walker grabbed his second of the day when he was again the beneficiary of an Adam Reynolds grubber-kick into the in-goal – the Test centre swooping onto the pill to all but seal the result of the match. Reynolds failed to add the extras, leaving the score at 20-6. The win is the Rabbitohs’ third win of the season.

Judiciary News
Glenn Stewart and Tim Grant were placed on report for a lifting tackle. MRC only proceeded and charged Glenn Stewart. Rabbitohs forward, Glenn Stewart, will miss no matches after taking the early guilty plea for a grade one Dangerous Throw, resulting from an incident in the 64th minute of Sunday’s 20-6 victory over the Wests Tigers. The early guilty plea results in a total of 93 points being recorded for the back-rower, meaning Stewart is free to play this Friday night against the Parramatta Eels pending selection.
U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 3
v Wests-Tigers, 1:45pm
WIN 24-20
Late Changes Souths were 1-17.
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have survived a late Wests Tigers flood of points in the NYC to claim victory in round three at ANZ Stadium. Inside the final 10 minutes of the match, the Tigers took the lead for the very first time thanks to a spirited revival. But a final try to winger Damon Goolagong inside the final two minutes of the clash sealed the result. It didn’t take long for the Rabbitohs to find first points – the side grabbing a brilliant opening try courtesy of a brilliant cross-field chip from Jordie Hedges to an unmarked Josh Ellison to score in the corner. Hedges added the extras to give the Rabbitohs a six-point lead. A struggle between the two sides ensued as they battled for supremacy in the middle of the field. But it was the Tigers who looked the most dangerous as they carved their way through the middle of the Rabbitohs’ defence on multiple occasions – the men in red and green relying on the defensive prowess of fullback, Irae Simone. Inside the final ten minutes of the opening half, the Rabbitohs finally managed to break the stalemate when winger Damon Goolagong crossed for the Club’s second try. Hedges converted to give the home side a 12-0 lead going into the break. The Rabbitohs continued to dominate proceedings after half-time, with the side looking dangerous with each attacking raid. Next points would come from hooker Aaron Booth, who went over from dummy-half in similar fashion to his four-pointer against the Roosters in round two. Hedges again made no mistake to take the score out to 18-0 with just over half an hour remaining. But a Tigers revival was brewing. The Tigers finally hit-back less than five minutes after the Rabbitohs’ try when superior numbers out wide saw winger Ryland Jacobs stroll over. Eli Levido converted from the touch-line to bring the score to 18-6. Wests backed up the effort when Esan Marsters crossed for his side’s second of the afternoon right next to the sticks. Levido added the extras to make it a six point ball-game at 18-12. Watso Heleta raced over for the side’s third successive try to bring the visitors within two points of the red and greens at 18-16 with 13 minutes remaining on the clock. While Levido missed the conversion attempt, the halfback made no mistake a minute later when the Tigers were awarded a penalty-goal from virtually right in front. With the clock winding down, another penalty to the Tigers on the same spot allowed Levido to take the lead for his team for the first time in the match at 20-18. But the Rabbitohs would have the final say in the match, with Damon Goolagong claiming a match-winning try at the death to secure the side’s second victory of the season by 24-20.

v Illawarra, Wollongong Stadium Sat Mar 21 3:00pm
LOSS 12-50
Late Changes team was 1-17.
The Illawarra Cutters produced their best performance of the season so far, putting the cleaners through the North Sydney Bears on their way to a 50-12 hiding at WIN Stadium, Wollongong. In a lopsided affair that saw the newly-formed halves pairing of Kris Keating and Shannon Crook control the tempo of play with their superior kicking game, it was the Cutters’ back five that were the main beneficiaries, combining for six of the nine tries scored, including a hat-trick to former Bear Justin Hunt. The home side were in control from the get go, with former South Sydney Rabbitohs and Penrith Panthers centre, Junior Vaivai, pouncing on an error at the back from the Bears to open the scoring in the fourth minute of play. Vaivai, who was a late inclusion into the line-up for Euan Aitken following his call-up to the Dragons, scored his second try only moments later, slicing through some woeful North Sydney defence to score under the posts. Crook’s conversion pushed the Cutters lead out to 10-0 after 11 minutes. Things only got worse from there for the Bears, with a pinpoint kick by Crook falling into the waiting arms of winger Tyron Cranston, who got the ball down just inside the sideline. Crook’s conversion from the western touchline was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 14-0 after just 16 minutes. Despite Illawarra dominating all facets of the game in the opening quarter, the Bears found themselves back in the contest when a Nikko Roberts grubber bamboozled the Cutters winger, before taking a kind bounce for an unmarked Sam Manuleleua to get North Sydney on the board. Roberts had no problem with the conversion from 15 metres in from touch, cutting the deficit to only eight points. Just when it felt as though the Bears were starting to assert themselves, Crook got a ball away to second rower Nathan Green, before batting it back inside to a trailing Justin Hunt to score under the posts and extend their lead to 20-6 following Crook’s conversion. In an amazing turn of events before the break, Illawarra capitalised on a North Sydney knock on over the try line, taking a quick 20-metre tap and storming down field to score their firth try of the opening stanza through former junior Kiwi, Adam Tuimavave-Gerrard. Poor discipline by the Cutters allowed North Sydney back into the game after half-time, with back-to-back penalties gifting the Bears ideal field position, before Brad Wall put Jack Gosiewski over to close the gap to 14 points. A number of poor last-tackle options by North Sydney enabled Illawarra to start a majority of their sets in good field position, allowing the home side to run away with the match in the final quarter of the game. Back-to-back converted tries to veteran five-eighth Kris Keating in the 60th and 64th minute pushed the Cutters lead out to 38-12, ensuring they pick up their second win from three starts. Adding to the Bears’ miseries, Justin Hunt managed to cross twice in three minutes, capping off his hat-trick and a 50-12 victory in sending a warning sign to the rest of the competition.
