WIN 18-17

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have snatched victory from the Bulldogs’ grasps by a single point at the death on Good Friday at ANZ Stadium in front of a crowd of 40,523. The victory wasn’t without controversy though, with an eight-point try as well as a penalty goal right at the death to the Rabbitohs sealed victory as Bulldogs fans threw bottles onto the pitch. A Trent Hodkinson bomb on the Rabbitohs’ own line failed to be diffused by Alex Johnston, resulting in a scrum to the blue and whites inside the first five minutes of the match. The Dogs took full advantage from the ensuing scrum, with Curtis Rona racing over in the corner. Hodkinson’s conversion attempt was waved away, leaving Canterbury ahead by 4-0. From the kick-off, the Bulldogs looked to attack from the very first tackle down the short-side, but were bundled into touch by some solid defence from Alex Johnston – gifting the Rabbitohs possession on the 20 metre line. But the red and greens failed to capitalise immediately despite a fluent attacking set. The Bulldogs would be next to score though in the 15th minute, this time through other winger Sam Perrett, who in similar fashion to the side’s first try picked up a loose ball before planting it over the line. Hodkinson made no mistake from the touch-line to make it 10-0. Six minutes from half-time, the Rabbitohs threw the ball out the back-line in an attempt to get out of their red zone, and with superior numbers, Alex Johnston broke through before kicking onwards to keep the play alive. But Bulldogs fullback Brett Morris was equal to the task, diffusing the effort by collecting the pill. The opportunities didn’t stop there for the Rabbits though – Glenn Stewart making a brilliant break out wide with only one pass separating his man in support, George Burgess, and the try-line. But Burgess couldn’t hold on to the ball in the slippery conditions. Two minutes from the break, Issac Luke was about to throw a spanner in the works when he darted from dummy-half and scored despite Brett Morris leading with the knees. Luke was knocked out, leading to the referees awarding an eight-point try, while Morris was placed on report. Reynolds slotted the conversion 15 metres in from touch, before making no mistake with the penalty-goal from right in front to take the half-time score to 10-8. It was all Canterbury in the opening exchanges of the second half, with Rabbitohs mistakes keeping the red and greens firmly entrenched within their own red-zone. The weight of possession eventually proved too much for Souths when Josh Reynolds put in a kick for Josh Morris, who picked up the ball right next to the sticks before crashing over for his second try of the season. Hodkinson added the extras from close range to make it 16-8. With Issac Luke off the field, the Rabbitohs’ problems were compounded when Glenn Stewart’s face became acquainted with the knee of George Burgess – Stewart was taken from the field as a result. Souths desperately needed something, and with a back-line re-shuffle that included Alex Johnston moving to fullback, while Greg Inglis slotted in at five-eighth, the red and green attack was rejuvenated. On the back of the change, Souths made good metres and eventually an Adam Reynolds grubber was picked up by Dave Tyrrell, who raced in behind the sticks to score. Reynolds added the extras from in front to make it a two-point ball-game again at 16-14. Six minutes from full-time, a penalty 45 metres out saw Reynolds opt to take a shot at goal, and true to form, the Souths Junior was equal to the task, levelling the game up at 16 points apiece. The kick-off though started poorly for the Rabbits with a knock-on in-goal-gifting the Dogs possession inside the half. Hodkinson took no chances by slotting a field-goal three and a half minutes from time to re-take the lead at 17-16. With a minute and a half remaining, James Graham launched himself into Adam Reynolds’ leg as he made an attempt at field goal. Graham was placed on report for the incident and the Rabbits earned a penalty from right in front to take the lead 18-17 to round out the match.

South Sydney's Adam Reynolds could miss just six NRL matches, after receiving a positive diagnosis on his injured knee on Friday. Reynolds suffered the injury late in the Rabbitohs' controversial Good Friday win over Canterbury, amid initial fears he would miss the rest of the season. The 24-year-old visited his surgeon on Friday. "Saw the specialist today. Don't need surgery yet and looking at 6-8 weeks. Could need surgery later though," Reynolds tweeted. Doctors are happy with the way his ruptured ligament has stabilised over the past week, but will examine it again next week to gauge how it has progressed. Reynolds will remain in a brace, but if the knee doesn't continue to recover he may still need to undergo the knife.

LOSS 18-20

Late Changes was Saumamao was out, Syme started second row, McCudden added to the bench.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs NYC side has gone down to the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs on Good Friday by 20-18 despite a late Rabbitohs revival. It was the Bulldogs in control all the way until the final three minutes when Souths scored two quick tries to get them back into the game. But the game belonged to the Bulldogs. The Rabbitohs put themselves under immense pressure in the opening 10 minutes with drop-balls marring their progress up-field. The weight of Dogs possession eventually proved too much, resulting in the blue and whites grabbing first points through back-rower, Harry Pondekas. Brad Keighran converted to give the side a six-point lead. It took the red and green’s almost 20 minutes to get into the Bulldogs’ side of halfway, with John Olive making a break down the touch-line as part of a promising raid. But the centre was bundled into touch 15 metres short of the line. With 14 minutes left in the opening stanza, the Bulldogs continued to dominate proceeding when prop-forward Jake Kamire muscled his way over the try-line right under the posts. Keighran converted to make it 12-0. A penalty to Canterbury 10 metres from the line gave Guy Hamilton the chance to kick his side two points further ahead – the halfback making no mistake to take the score to 14-0. But the half was far from over. An altercation in mid-field saw Souths’ Eden Syme placed on report, allowing the Bulldogs to kick themselves a further two points ahead from inside the 40 metre line, making the half-time score 16-0. On the resumption, the Bulldogs continued their dominant display by scoring inside the first ten minutes of play courtesy of a back-line movement that eventually saw centre Reubenn Rennie score out wide to take it to 20-0. Souths would hit back immediately though when a short-side play saw Damon Goolagong find the slightest of gaps. The winger danced through defenders before racing 30 metres before bettering the position to score. Jordie Hedges converted to make it 20-6. With three minutes on the clock remaining a Rabbitohs revival was about to begin, with Olive picking up a try after a game of hot-potato in near the corner-post resulted in the Bulldogs being a man short in defence. Hedges converted out wide to make it 20-12. Another Rabbitohs attacking raid close to the line saw Wallace Tangiiti kick for a flying Hedges to come through centre-field and score. Hedges converted his own try to make the final score 20-18.

LOSS 22-30

Late Changes - Croad and Friend were out, McInnes started hooker, Brown prop, Hyland at lock, Ross and J.Roberts on the bench.

The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs have won a 30-22 thriller over the North Sydney Bears on a wet afternoon at Belmore Oval. Trailing by six at halftime, the Bulldogs put in a strong second-half performance inspired by halves pairing Matt Frawley and Lindon McGrady, as well as Dane Chisholm off the bench. The Bears put in a brave effort as they had better ball control than the Bulldogs in extremely wet conditions, despite trailing on the scoreboard at full time. A conservative opening 10 minutes to the game saw some strong opening defensive performances by both sides. The first try came from no defensive mistake but a handling error by Bears winger Sam Manuleleua who couldn’t hold onto the ball while trying to retrieve a grubber in the in-goal area. The Bulldogs pounced on the loose ball and Levi Dodd converted the try. The defence was broken in the 21st minute when Frawley made a linebreak and gave it off for Shaun Lane to score for a 10-0 lead. Manuleleua made up for his error by putting an enormous hit on a Bulldogs ball carrier in the 25th minute to force the ball loose. On the back of that, he showed speed and skill to score a wonderful try in the corner. Nikko Roberts’ conversion from the sideline dramatically found its way through after it hit both uprights. In the 33rd minute Roberts stepped through the defence to score a solo try adjacent to the posts and converted it to give the Bears the lead. The Bears increased the buffer three minutes later when Brock Gray picked up a kick that deflected off the Bulldogs and passed to Manuleleua who crossed for his second try. It was 16-10 to the Bears going into halftime after the conversion was unsuccessful. The Bulldogs began their second-half domination just four minutes in when Tautalatasi Tasi strolled over in the right corner courtesy of a McGrady pass to trail 16-14 after the conversion was missed. Dodd stole the lead from the Bears in the 52nd minute when he scored in the left corner after a pass from Frawley. Damien Cook took over the kicking duties but missed the goal. The Bears never gave up and were on the attack on many occasions with creative efforts by Roberts and hooker Cameron McInnes being strong out of dummy half. When they were on the attack in the 65th minute however, Tyrone Phillips took advantage of a wayward pass to Manuleleua who picked up the ball and ran a fair distance to score. Chisholm was the Bulldogs’ third kicker of the day and converted the try to make it 24-16. The Bears hit straight back when Roberts put an optimistic chip kick through and Brock Gray re-gathered to score under the posts for a great try. Roberts added the extra two points and it was back to 24-22. With four minutes remaining and only two points separating the sides, Chisholm kicked an exceptional and important 40/20, which led to the match-winning try by Lane who muscled his way over for his second try of the day. Chisholm converted and the score stayed at 30-22. Both sides put on an entertaining display in what was a physical encounter in a rain-affected match.

NSWRL U18 SG Ball Cup - Round 8

v Western Suburbs, Campbelltown Stadium, Sat Apr 4 12:00pm

WIN 30-20

A dominant first half was enough to get Souths home 30-20 against a spirited Western Suburbs last weekend at Campbelltown in the SG Ball competition. Souths were in first after a physical opening four minutes, Dylan O’Connor strolling through a hole opened up by a neat decoy play. Siosifas Talakai split the uprights perfectly, and Souths were away 6-0. Souths quickly doubled their lead, Emre Guler spinning through some soft defence after an offload from Siosifas Talakai, who converted the try for a 12-0 lead. It was all red and green, handling errors cruelling the Magpie attack and defence, as Gabe Hamlin crashed over after two neat offloads for an 18-0 lead. Wests needed to score next to stay in the contest, and they did just that, Elijah Mannah in adjacent to the uprights and, courtesy of Hosea Leuea’s conversion, the score was back to 18-6. South Sydney hit back to undercut the black and white momentum, Dylan O’Connor sneaking out of one tackle before carrying three Magpies over the line in an incredible show of strength. The kick, from almost bang on the touchline, was dead straight from Siosifas Talakai, Souths taking their 24-6 lead to the break. Wests came out firing after the break and struck first, a kick through from Toa Mata’afa allowing Jye Brooker to dribble ahead and score for the Magpies to reduce the deficit to 24-10, Hosea Leuea slicing the kick. Wests were holding their own against the aggressive Souths pack, and took advantage after a knock on, Hosea Leuea scoring out wide after a nice shimmy and go, although he couldn’t convert his own try, Souths ahead by ten with as many minutes remaining. Wests made it a grandstand finish with four minutes remaining, Hosea Leuea breaking through before kicking wide and putting on a sixpence for Jye Brooker to mark and claim his second of the day, Leuea’s coversion making it 24-20 Souths. However, the Bunnies would not be denied, Henry Fuimaono crashing over with Wests attempting the steal. Talakai threw it over from in front, Souths prevailing 30-20.

NSWRL U16 Harold Matthews Cup Round 8

v Western Suburbs, Campbelltown Stadium, Sat Apr 4 10:30am

WIN 46-4

South Sydney were red hot at a soggy Campbelltown last Saturday, thumping Wests 46-4 in the Harold Matthews. Handling errors aplenty marred the opening of the game, but Wests held on long enough to send the ball wide off a dropout, Nathan Patolo touching down in the left corner for a 4-0 lead after eight minutes. Souths hit back at the halfway mark of the first stanza, some lateral attack moving the Magpie defence around before Daniel Fifita went through the meat of the pack to reach out alongside the posts for a 6-4 lead courtesy of the kick from Mawene Hiroti. Wests were dominating proceedings, but the third try went to the visitors, a lucky ricochet off a Gus Garzaniti kick allowing Mawene Hiroti to capitalise after Souths went 100 metres in two plays, the Bunnies ahead 12-4 ten minutes out from halftime. Souths registered their third just before the interval, Malla Chan-Foon going over after Souths spread the ball in good field position after a poor Magpies turnover. Hiroti nailed the touchline kick, the Rabbitohs going to halftime with an 18-4 break. The second half could not have started worse for Wests, putting down the kick-off and giving Souths a scrum, from which Mawene Hiroti crashed over on the left flank before converting to make the score 24-4. Momentum had swung violently after the break to Souths, and they quickly scored again, Campbell Graham put away off an inside ball from Josh Cook, Hiroti unable to add to the 28-4 lead. Wests could not keep a handle on the ball, Souths pouncing by going wide and, although Wests came up with the cover tackle, Dean Hawkins strolled through off the ensuing play to extend the lead to 34-4 with 18 minutes still to play. Wests defence was struggling under the mountain of dropped ball, and Josh Cook took full toll, going through the ruck almost untouched to score. Hiroti added the extras and the visitors broke 40 with ten minutes remaining. Wests could not take a trick, a right spread going to ground, Jonny Mitsias on hand to scoop up the scraps and race 80 metres to touch down for Souths’ eighth try , the Rabbits running out 46-4 winners.
