LOSS 12-16
South Sydney have gone down to the Melbourne Storm this evening by 16-12 in a hotly contested Round 10 match at AAMI Park during the NRL’s Women in League Round. After trailing 16-2 at the break, the men in red and green kept the Storm scoreless in the second half, scoring two tries of their own to narrow the gap. But time was against Michael Maguire’s men despite a spirited final 20 minutes. The Rabbitohs started the match strongly by completing their opening set and getting another one when Aaron Gray bundled the Storm’s winger over the touch-line on the 20. Another promising attacking raid from the ensuing set yielded another repeat set courtesy of a well-weighted kick from Dylan Walker. On the back of that set, a penalty to the red and greens on the 30 metre line allowed Bryson Goodwin to kick his side two points ahead after just five minutes. Chris McQueen then came within a millimetre of scoring in the eighth minute when he hit the ball at speed close to the try-line before reaching out. But the Queenslander couldn’t keep control of the pill. Souths’ two-point advantage was short-lived when a penalty against George Burgess for hands on the ball allowed Cameron Smith a chance to level the scores with a penalty goal from right in front. In a sign of the level of respect both sides hold for each other, another penalty to the Storm in similar position in the 15th minute saw Smith again take the shot at goal to hand the home-side the lead by 4-2. The ill-discipline led to Melbourne gaining momentum, eventually resulting in a try to front-rower Jesse Bromwich right next to the posts in the 21st minute, despite the desperate defensive efforts of the men in red and green. Smith added the extras to make it 10-2. Souths threw everything they had at the Storm in a determined period of play, but wave after wave of red and green attack was repelled by the home-side with confidence. The strong defence would pay dividends for the Storm, the side eventually going over through Will Chambers two minutes before half-time to make the half-time score 16-2. After the break, the Rabbitohs would be the first to score after a change of direction on the final tackle from John Sutton allowed Keary to kick for the wing of Johnston, who in turn flew above the Storm defence to score. Issac Luke converted from out wide to make it 16-8 nine minutes into the second stanza. Souths continued to attack, and after a Mahe Fonua mistake deep inside Storm territory, a red and green back-line movement saw Aaron Gray slide over in his left hand corner for the third try of his career. Luke’s touch-line conversion attempt hit the upright leaving the score at 16-12. With six minutes remaining, Dylan Walker seemed to snatch the game from the Storm’s grasp thanks to a short-side play that saw Johnston leap from the field of play to bat the ball back to Walker. But while the Souths Junior managed to get the ball down, the video referee spotted Johnston’s foot on the touch-line before he gave the ball. Despite a spirited performance from the Rabbitohs, the two points would ultimately go to the Storm by 12-16.

LOSS 26-38

The South Sydney Rabbitohs’ under 20s side has fallen to the Melbourne Storm 38 points to 26 at Gosch’s Paddock in Melbourne tonight (Saturday). The Rabbitohs poked their noses in front early in the match, but the Storm managed to get back in front and maintain the lead to secure the two competition points. Melbourne winger Josh Cullen-Minhinnick was the first to score in the third minute before the Rabbitohs struck through powerhouse prop Clayton Williams in the seventh minute. Williams bounced out of three or four tackles in a tough run at the line, with Jordie Hedges’ conversion giving the visitors a six-four lead. The Storm scored twice more after this through tries to Brandon Manase and Junior Kirisome, establishing a 14-6 lead. Centre Irae Simone was the next to score for Souths, following some nice hands from halfback Eli Levido in his first game for the Club. Hedges converted to reduce the Storm’s lead to two points. Cullen-Minhinnick scored twice more to complete a first half hat trick for the Storm, giving Melbourne a 24-12 lead at the break. Junior Kirisome scored his second try four minutes into the second half, followed by a try to Storm dummy half Connor Donohue, giving the Storm an unassailable 36-12 lead after 49 minutes. Damon Goolagong would cross for the first of his two tries in the 53rd minute when a handy backline movement saw him touch down in the left corner. Hedges converted from the touch line to take the score line to 36-18. Right winger Josh Ellison would cross next in the 69th minute, diving over in the right hand corner, taking the score line to 36-22. The Storm kicked a penalty goal before the Rabbitohs posted the final points of the match through Goolagong in the penultimate minute of the game, finalising the score line at Storm 38 – Rabbitohs 26. The Rabbitohs were led throughout the match by Clayton Williams who was relentless in attack and defence, but it was not to be for our under 20s in Melbourne tonight.

WIN 26-18
Late Changes - Manuleleua, Hyland, Sorensen, Wall, Sione were out. L.Smith started center, Olive wing, J.Garlick hooker, Lee prop, J.Roberts, Schmakeal, Mourad on the bench. Nicholls was captain.
The last-placed North Sydney Bears overcame the loss of key personnel to record a stunning 26-18 win over the defending premiers in what surely ranks as the upset of the season so far. For the past five games, the Penrith Panthers have been a model of consistency built around a simple game plan of getting to their kick and relying on their defence to force teams into error. The opening 40 minutes against the Bears however, was one to forget for the Panthers given their low completion rate and compounded by a defensive line that leaked six line breaks. The Bears win is even more meritorious considering they lost influential skipper Matt Hyland, the experienced Scott Sorensen and the team’s top try scorer, Sam Manuleleua before kick-off. The Panthers, already bolstered by Isaac John’s return, were further boosted when enforcer Adam Docker was deemed fit to play his first game since his Round 3 send-off against the Jets. The opening minutes of the game was punctuated by errors, but the Bears scored first to lead 6-0 after nine minutes. Prop Fred Junior Mauala burrowed his way over to score after Penrith junior Evan Lee offloaded in heavy traffic. Buoyed by their lead, the Bears repeatedly targeted the Panthers outer right edge defence, while their kicking game often earned repeat sets. Their lead was soon doubled in the 18th minute when replacement hooker Jackson Garlick sold a gigantic dummy before diving over from dummy half. The Panthers lacked direction from their key playmakers and were further punished for their listless play in the 34th minute when a quick spread close to the Panthers tryline put Darryl Millard on an angled run to score out near the right corner post. Darren Nicholls’ conversion attempt hit the post, but nonetheless the Panthers were stunned, trailing 16-0 at halftime. The second half saw a complete reversal as the Bears repeatedly coughed up possession, which gifted the Panthers the territorial advantage that they lacked in the first half. Chris Smith capitalised on that advantage for the Panthers, after some quick hands inside the Bears’ 20, involving John and Pat Hollis, allowed the centre to crash over from close range to trail by 10. Within ten minutes, the Panthers levelled the game through two quick tries to Tom Eisenhuth and Eddie Aiono, both scoring from close range with John and Sam Scarlett respectively instrumental in the lead up to those tries. The Panthers could have easily wrapped up the game had they converted their opportunities into points, having bombed three certain try-scoring opportunities during the opening 25 minutes of the second half. A simple penalty goal from 20 metres out for Will Smith did allow the Panthers to claim the lead for the first time in the match with eight minutes remaining. Just as the Panthers appeared set to claim victory, the Bears were awarded a late tackle penalty in good field position in what was a game-changing call. The Bears capitalised, starving the Panthers of possession before tries to Cody Walker and Darren Nicholls in the last five minutes of the game sealed a shock but deserved 26-18 win to the Bears.
