LOSS 6-20
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down to the Penrith Panthers tonight (Friday) to the tune of 20-6 at Pepper Stadium in Round 17 of the NRL. The Rabbitohs were kept scoreless for some 75 minutes, with the sides only four-pointer coming in the form of a try to Joel Reddy. It was all the Rabbitohs in the opening 10 minutes of the match, with the men in red and green attacking the home-side’s line with intent and precision, but espite numerous cracks at the line, the Rabbitohs were unable to come up with points. The Panthers by contrast had no such issue when they finally found themselves deep in Souths’ half and it would prove to be a theme for the night. Dallin Watene-Zelezniak picked up a loose ball close to the line to score a try, but not before the video referee took numerous looks at the effort before finally awarding the try to make it 4-0. Zelezniak almost grabbed a second from the ensuing set when he had the Rabbitoh defence clutching air after a brilliant in-and-away to seemingly score. But the try was immediately disallowed thanks to an obstruction. If the first 10 minutes was all Souths’, the remainder of the match was all about Penrith. The Panthers were looking dangerous with the ball – making easy metres while also throwing some adventurous passes that could have easily yielded points had it not been for some poor ball-control in the following 10 minutes. The weight of possession would eventually yield points for Penrith, with centre Dean Whare taking advantage of a jagged Rabbitohs defensive line to streak over and score out wide. Soward’s conversion attempt was waved away to leave the score at 8-0. A number of penalties to the Rabbitohs deep in Penrith’s half saw the men in red and green try unsuccessfully to score thanks to some brilliant Panthers defence. Alex Johnston almost conjured a try out of nothing inside the final minute of play when he broke through the Panthers line just past the 40, before being briefly grounded and passing on to a flying Bryson Goodwin who seemed to score. But officials ruled against the four-pointer citing that the Johnston tackle was complete. The decision would take the teams to the sheds with Penrith leading 8-0. After the break, the Panthers came out firing again and after pressing the Rabbitohs on their own line for a myriad of repeat-sets, a kick into the in-goal from Jamie Soward saw Peter Wallace time his run to pounce on the pill to score right next to the sticks. Former Rabbitoh Apisai Koroisau converted to make it 14-0. Penrith continued to dominate by repelling wave after wave of Rabbitohs attack before immediately turning defence into attack to apply pressure on the red and greens, and with just under 20 minutes remaining, Waqa Blake tip-toed down the sideline to grab a try for the home-side to make it 18-0. The Rabbitohs’ woes continued when Dave Tyrrell was knocked out and consequently stretchered off the field after a head-clash in a tackle. Tyrrell would not return although in a positive sign, the prop forward did sit on the bench for the remainder of proceedings. Chris Grevsmuhl came within an inch of scoring when he hit the ball close to the line at speed, only to be tackled short. But just one play later, Joel Reddy would finally get the Rabbitohs on the board when the winger planted his hand on an impossibly fast moving ball courtesy of an Adam Reynolds kick. Reynolds wasted no time converting from the touch-line with a beautiful kick to make it 18-6. But with the clock winding down, a penalty to Penrith 18 metres from the uprights saw Koroisau kick his second goal of the night to take the score out to 20-6 to round out the match.

The Rabbitohs NYC side has gone down to the Penrith Panthers at Pepper Stadium by 22-8 this evening after leading going into the second half. Souths looked well in control for much of the early portion of the game, but the Panthers came out a renewed outfit in the second half to keep the Rabbitohs scoreless for the remainder of the match. Ill-discipline put the Panthers under pressure inside the first five minutes of play, with the Rabbitohs benefitting from three consecutive penalties deep in the Panthers’ half. On the final occasion, Jordie Hedges took the opportunity to kick his side two points ahead from 20 metres out to make it 2-0. By the 15 minute mark, Devon Makoare-Boyce turned defence into attack for the Rabbitohs when he took a kick into the in-goal before streaking some 102 metres to score the first try of the night – the Rabbitohs fullback showing scintillating pace to reach the try-line untouched. Hedges added the extras from out wide to make it 8-0. Penrith looked to reply mere minutes later, but a grubber-kick ricocheted off an offside Panther rendering Moses Leotea’s grounding a no try. But the home-side made no mistake when a cut-out pass to Logan Geyer saw the late inclusion steam into a widening gap to slam the ball down. The conversion attempt was waved away, leaving the score at 8-4 with the Rabbitohs ahead going into the break. It took nine minutes following the break for points to be scored and they would come from the Panthers, with lock-forward Tyrone May breaking through the Rabbitohs defensive line to score. Dylan Edwards converted from short-range for Penrith to take the lead by two points at 10-8. Penrith made it a one-two punch when replacement Cowen Epere hit the ball up hard before overpowering the defence to plant the ball down under the sticks. Edwards added the extras to make it 16-8. Souths missed two opportunities down the left hand side to post more points during the course of the second stanza as the side looked to claw back to the lead. With 30 seconds left in the match, the Panthers attacked the Rabbitohs line and came up with a final four-pointer through hooker, Sione Katoa, with Edwards again adding the extras to make the final score 22-8.

DRAW 34-34

The North Sydney Bears recorded their second draw of the season against Mounties on Saturday –the teams fighting out a `34 all draw at North Sydney Oval in Round 17. Norths led late in the match, but were unable to hold on against a fast-finishing Mounties side who managed two converted tries in the final 10 minutes to draw level. The match saw the successful return of centre Kirisome Auva’a, who capped off his return with a second half try. Mounties got their day underway by drawing first blood of the afternoon after just five minutes. But Bears fullback Latrell Schaumkel would put the red and blacks back on level pecking with a four-pointer of his own at the 15 minute mark along with Darren Nicholls’ conversion. It was a case of tit for tat in the 24th minutes when Mounties went in for their second to make it 10-6, but it would again be Schaumkel who would claw the Bears back to 10 apiece, before scoring a third and by the 35th minute, Darren Nicholls was adding a converted try of his own to the ledger to make the score 22-10 leading in to half-time. On the resumption, five-eighth Cody Walker added his name to the score-sheet just nine minutes into the second stanza. Nicholls was unable to convert, although a later penalty goal would see the Bears reach 28 points. With the Bears looking well in control, Mounties mounted a come-back to get themselves within four points of the lead with 10 minutes in the match remaining courtesy of two tries. But in the 70th minute, Auva’a struck out wide to seemingly all but seal the match at 34-22. Mounties however would have the final say of the match, with two converted tries finishing proceedings at 34 apiece.
Kirisome Auva'a has been charged with a Grade 2 striking charge in the first minute of the game. This has a base penalty of 225 points. He also has a non similar offence yielding a 20% loading plus he has 45 carry overpoints. Kirisome has taken the early guilty plea and will miss two games with 47 carryover points.
