WIN 52-6
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have demolished the Newcastle Knights by a whopping 52-6 at ANZ Stadium tonight in their biggest win of the season so far and their biggest winning margin over the Newcastle side. Hat-tricks to Greg Inglis and Dylan Walker, as well as a double to Alex Johnston helped the men in red and green to the incredible finish that also fell just four points short of the side’s biggest ever winning margin at ANZ Stadium. The Knights burst out of the blocks by getting in a good first set before also receiving a penalty. The infringement would prove costly for the Rabbitohs, who were put on the back-pedal early. Kade Snowden crashed over from short-range to open the scoring before Tyrone Roberts converted. But that would be the end of the Knights' evening so far as points were concerned. When the Rabbitohs finally got use of the ball after four minutes, they would make full use of the opportunity with Alex Johnston getting outside his opposite number before streaking away and passing onto inside-man, Dylan Walker. Walker would score his second try in two weeks in fine style, but Reynolds’ radar was off target, leaving the score at 6-4. With the Knights attempting to get out of their own red zone, a loose ball was picked up by Tim Grant, setting up a brilliant attacking opportunity for Souths. As a result, Johnston would get a try of his own in the set when the red and green’s again opted to go right – Johnston overpowering the defence before reaching out desperately to score. Reynolds added the extras from an almost identical position to his last attempt to make the lead 10-6 Another error by the Knights just two minutes after the try saw the Rabbitohs apply yet more pressure on the Newcastle side. Swinging the ball out the back-line, Keary held up a pass just long enough to get Sutton through a gap, who in turn passed back inside to a flying Greg Inglis who scored behind the sticks. Reynolds converted to make it 16-6. Reynolds then hoisted a monster, spiralling bomb, at the conclusion of a Rabbitohs set that was spilt by Newcastle, again giving the Rabbitohs an attacking opportunity in good field position. The error would again yield points, this time through Bryson Goodwin, who finished off what appeared to be a routine training drill to make the score 20-6 with 14 minutes left in the first half. While Reynolds was unsuccessful with his conversion attempt, Greg Inglis seemed to make it his mission to get more points off the next set – the Rabbitohs skipper dancing through the Knights defence before racing 35 metres, stretching out and scoring a brilliant try. Reynolds made no mistake to make it 26-6. It was raining tries at ANZ Stadium when Walker was again the recipient of a Johnston inside ball to score, but not before some intense scrutiny from the video referee after Walker took an age to plant the ball over the line – some desperate defence from Beau Scott almost managing to diffuse the try. But the on-field decision of ‘try’ stuck, taking the score out to 30-6. Inglis would put the finishing touches on the Rabbitohs first half when he dummied close to the line and strolled straight through the Knights defence to complete his hat-trick. Reynolds added the extras from out wide to make the half-time score an impressive 36-6. The Knights’ horror night of handling continued in the second half when Jake Mamo fumbled a ball deep in his own red-zone – an error that would see the Rabbitohs apply the blow-torch for three consecutive sets. The Knights would eventually crack under the weight of the sustained pressure, with Thomas Burgess grabbing his second career try – the English international crashing over from short range under the sticks. Reynolds added the extras from right in front to make it 42-6. A rare mistake from the red and greens should have been an opportunity for the Knights to claw back, but instead, the Rabbitohs flexed their muscle even further when they managed to bundle a Knights attacker over the touch-line as they looked to attack. Alex Johnston missed an opportunity to score in the corner in one attacking instance, but not long afterwards, the Souths Junior grabbed his second of the night off a kick to make it 46-6. The half-century was notched up – as well as Walker’s hat-trick – when the Test centre hit a short-ball from Glenn Stewart before exploding through the line to score behind the sticks. Reynolds added the extras to make the final score 52-6.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 20
v Newcastle, 5:15pm
LOSS 22-24
Late Changes - Hedges, Rudolf out. O'Donnell starts five-eighth, Gardiner lock, Hamlin on the bench.
The South Sydney Rabbitohs NYC (under 20s) side has gone down to the Newcastle Knights by 24-22 at ANZ Stadium tonight, despite a spirited second half from the men in red and green. With 20 minutes gone in the first half, the Knights managed to get over the line first when lock-forward Luke Yates barged over adjacent to the posts in a show of strength. Brock Lamb added the extras to give Newcastle the lead. Not long afterwards, a Rabbitohs error in-goal saw the Knights capitalise immediately when a kick in-goal wasn’t diffused by the red and greens. Knights winger Fuimamao Uta pounced on the pill to extend the lead. Lamb converted to make it 12-0. Newcastle centre Jacob Gagai turned defence into attack when he extended the lead by racing 70 metres to score untouched next to the posts. Lamb made no mistake with his conversion attempt to make it 18-0 with six minutes in the half remaining. With pressure mounting on the red and greens to respond, recent SG Ball graduate Gabe Hamlin delivered – the lock-forward hitting the ball at speed to score under the posts. Eli Levido added the extras from right in front to take the score at half-time to 18-6 in Newcastle’s favour. On the resumption, the Rabbitohs came out with renewed vigour. With the red and greens attacking the Knights short-side with intent, Haimona Hiroti hit the ball at speed before racng 20 metres to score out wide. But while the Rabbitohs were playing with renewed gusto, it was the Knights who would score next when front-rower Josh King broke through the South Sydney line to re-take control of the match. Lamb’s conversion made the score 24-10 with just under 18 minutes in the match remaining. With the clock winding down, the men in red and green mounted another attack, and it would be replacement Joe Gardiner who would power over the line. Levido added the extras to make it an eight-point ball-game with seven minutes remaining. Gardiner would cross in similar circumstances with just under a minute left in the game – Levido quickly converting to bring the Rabbitohs within two points of the Knights. Troy Finch’s side would throw the ball around with intent as they searched for more points, but the game would ultimately belong to the Knights by 24-22.

The North Sydney Bears scored an impressive Saturday afternoon win over the Illawarra Cutters in Round 20 of the NSW Cup at North Sydney Oval. Doubles to Cody Walker and Latrell Schaumkel helped the Bears to a much-needed victory as they look to finish the season in the race for the finals – the Bears now sitting in ninth place on the competition ladder. The Bears got on the front footy early when prop-forward Zane Musgrove crashed over for the side’s first of the afternoon with Darren Nicholls adding the extras. The Cutters responded with a converted try of their own through Craig Garvey in the 17th minute, but five minutes later, Cody Walker raced in for the first of his two tries. Nicholls’ conversion gave the red and blacks a 12-6 lead. It was a case of tit for tat in the 28th minute when Cutters hooker Garvey grabbed his second to equalise at 12 apiece. Four minutes before half-time, Bears powerhouse-prop, Nathan Brown, crashed over to re-take the lead. Nicholls converted and before long was doing likewise for the first of Latrell Schaumkel’s tries one minute from half-time to take the teams to the sheds with the Bears leading 22-12. After the break, Nicholls wasted no time in getting his team back on the board when he scored a converted try of his own just three minutes into the half. But the Cutters were about to mount a mini-revival when they raced in two tries to come within eight points of the Bears at 28-20. The Bears increased the intensity and it was Schaumkel and Walker who would be the ultimate beneficiary’s when they both grabbed their second four-pointers of the afternoon – Nicholls’ conversions making the score 40-20. Paul Carter would put the finishing touches on the scoreboard for the Bears to take their final tally to 44, while the Cutters finished off on 32 points
