WIN 31-18
A strong showing from the Rabbitohs has seen the red and greens claim a 31-18 victory over the North Queensland Cowboys in a blockbuster top-four clash in Townsville tonight. The five tries to three effort, coupled with a perfect night with the boot for halfback Adam Reynolds, saw the successful return of Kirisome Auva’a as well as the Rabbitohs debut of Paul Carter – both players celebrating with victory in the physical clash. After just two minutes, a penalty to the Rabbitohs deep inside their own half saw Adam Reynolds boot the side up-field before a second-phase ball from John Sutton close to the line allowed Greg Inglis to stroll through for first points. Reynolds converted from out wide to give the Rabbitohs an early six-point lead. But the penalties were going both ways, and with a string of them going the way of the Cowboys, an attacking raid close to the Rabbitohs line saw Justin O’Neil take advantage of an overlap to score out wide. Thurston converted to equalise at six apiece. The Rabbitohs hit back in the 24th minute in a big way when Thomas Burgess stepped off his right foot before defying two Cowboys defenders to score right next to the posts in typical Burgess fashion. Reynolds made no mistake to re-take the lead at 12-6. With the first half winding down, the Cowboys came within a whisker of scoring through Michael Morgan, after a final tackle bomb from Thurston failed to be diffused by Inglis. A scramble for the ball ensued in=goal, and despite Morgan eventually getting the ball down, the try was disallowed for an earlier knock-on. Adam Reynolds seized the opportunity to kick a field-goal with two minutes left in the opening half to take the score to an unusual 13-6. But the decision would prove crucial mere minutes later. Justin O’Neil kicked into the in-goal for a flying Lachlan Coote, who took the ball to score seven metres in from touch 59 seconds from the break. Thurston converted to take the teams to the sheds with Souths leading by 13-12. On the resumption, Issac Luke was placed on report for a dangerous tackle just shy of half-way, allowing the Cowboys first meaningful use of the ball in the second stanza. But despite the opportunity, it would be the Rabbitohs who would be next to score on the back of a well-timed short-ball from Luke to Jason Clark – the Souths Junior hitting the ball at speed to score. Reynolds was on song yet again with the boot to extend the lead to 19-12. The match began to heat up with both sides partaking in niggle as the teams looked for any advantage they could in the tight encounter – players from both sides being warned for a series of push and shoves. The rise in intensity saw the Rabbitohs grab the next try when a massive Reynolds bomb was allowed to bounce by the Cowboys, - Alex Johnston taking the ball to score his 37th career try next to the posts. Reynolds added the extras to make it 25-12. North Queensland weren’t done yet though, with the home side applying plenty of pressure on the visitors. But after showing immense steel defensively to keep the Thurston led Cowboys out, the men in red and green grabbed more points off the back of a brilliant dummy-half run from Luke, who in turn passed on to Johnston, who then went to Walker who scored under the posts. Reynolds continued his perfect night with the boot to take the score to 31-12. Morgan grabbed a consolation try for the Cowboys with three minutes remaining, but it was a case of too little too late, the Rabbitohs coming away with a 31-18 victory.

Judiciary News
Issac Luke was placed on report and subsequently charged by the MRC with a grade one grade one dangerous throw (44th minute). This carrys a base penalty of 125 points but Issac incurrs a 50% loading for a similar offnce but has no carryover points all up a 187 point charge. A early guilty plea will result in a 140 point charge.
Also during the match Issac Luke has been charged with well as a grade one shoulder charge (46th minute) that has a base penalty of 200 points but attracts a 20% non-similar offence loading all up 240 point penalty. A early guility plea will result in a 180 point charge. As these two penalties get combined Issac would attract 320 points and miss 3 weeks if he accepts a early plea for both charges.
Meanwhile, Rabbitohs five-eighth Luke Keary was charged by the MRC with a grade one shoulder charge (9th minute) – a charge that has a base penalty of 200 points. Should Keary take the early-plea, the five-eighth will miss one match and accrue 150 points.
Keary has since accepted the early guilty plea and will miss one game, with 50 carryover points.
Issac Luke and Souths have subsequently chosen to accept the early guilty plea for the Grade 1 dangrous throw and Issac will miss one week with 40 carryover points.
For the other shoulder charge offence, Issac Luke and Souths have chosen to fight this charge at the judicary. The judicary hearing has since found Issac Luke not guilty and the shoulder charge offence has been dropped. This means Issac will only miss one game.
U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 23
v North Queensland, 4:30pm
LOSS 30-44
Late Changes - Souths were 1-17.
The South Sydney Rabbitohs’ under 20s Holden Cup team mounted a late comeback, but it was not enough to knock over the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville this afternoon (Thursday), going down 44 points to 30. The Rabbitohs trailed 44-8 after 67 minutes, and went on to score four tries in the final 12 minutes, but it wasn’t to be for the young men in red and green at the end of the 80 minutes. The Cowboys were the first to score through fullback Kalyn Ponga, who made the most of a repeat set to slice through the Rabbitohs’ defence to score to the left of the uprights. Five-eighth Kyle Laybutt converted to give the home side an early six-nil lead. Some lazy Rabbitohs’ defence led to the next Cowboys try, with halfback Cooper Bambling beating five South Sydney defenders to score under the posts. Laybutt converted to give the home side a 12-point advantage. The Rabbitohs struck back in the 17th minute when young centre Siosifa Talakai scored on the right hand side. On the back of a penalty the Rabbitohs made their way up field, and some movement of the ball through the back line had the Cowboys’ defence stretched. The ball went right to fullback Jordie Hedges who put on a deft short ball for Talakai to race over, reducing the deficit to eight points. It would only take a few minutes for the home side to retaliate, with wingers Scott Schulte and Gideon Mosby scoring tries in the 22nd and 25th minutes. Laybutt missed the conversions, leaving the score line at 20-4. Mosby would cross for his double in the 29th minute, a long ball from Ponga catching the Rabbitohs short in defence out wide. Bambling missed the conversion, taking the score to 24-4 in favour of the Cowboys. Bambling crossed for his second in the 33rd minute when a gap opened up close to the line due a Rabbitohs’ defender slipping over. He converted his own try, taking the score line to 30-4. The Rabbitohs scored their second try of the afternoon in the 39th minute of play, when some good passing plays found Irae Simone on the right wing. Simone trampled over one defender to get the ball down in the corner. Hedges missed the conversion, taking the half time score line to Cowboys 30 – Rabbitohs 8. The Rabbitohs could not have started the second half more poorly, with a knock on from the kick off leading to a try to Laybutt in the 41st minute. Bambling converted to extend the lead to 28 points. The Cowboys were at it again shortly after, with fullback Ponga scoring his second try for the match adjacent to the uprights in the 47th minute, and his third three minutes later in the same spot beside the posts. Bambling missed both conversions, leaving the score at 44-8. The Rabbitohs started to muscle up in defence which started to bring some errors from the Cowboys, halting the run of points from the North Queenslanders. The new aggressive style paid off for Souths, with Siosifa Talakai crossing for his second try of the afternoon in the 68th minute of play. The Rabbitohs rolled their way up field, courtesy of strong runs and offloads by prop Clayton Williams. The ball was then swung to the right, with Talakai running a fantastic line to break the defence and run around underneath the posts. Hedges converted to take the score line to 44-14 in favour of the Cowboys. South Sydney were not done with yet, with Eli Levido laying on a perfect short ball for Jacob McCudden, who raced 30 metres to score in the 75th minute of play. Hedges converted, with the score now reading 44-20 in favour of North Queensland. Two minutes later the Rabbitohs were over again, this time it was Brock Gray getting over the stripe after a great lead up run and offload by centre Tevita Cottrell. Hedges converted, reducing the deficit to 18 points. Souths would score again in the final minute of play when Cottrell charged straight and hard, bumping off defenders to score out wide on the left. Hedges missed the conversion, leaving the final score line to read Cowboys 44 – Rabbitohs 30.

WIN 52-20
Late Changes Mauala and C.Walker are out. Brown starts prop, Reddy wing, Millard five-eighth, Olive fullback.
For the fourth consecutive week, the Bears defeated an opposition team sitting above them on the ladder – this time a 32-point victory over the fifth placed Newcastle Knights. Angus Crichton, Chris Grevsmuhl and Tulsa Saumamoa dominated through the middle in the convincing 52-20 victory, while John Olive was an explosive asset at left centre. Paterika Vaivai from the Knights and Nathan Brown from the Bears were sent to the sin bin for two separate incidents during the match. A horrible start for the Bears saw a knock on in the first set of the game, followed by an early penalty that gifted the Knights field position. Carlos Tuimavave took full advantage by slicing through the Bears defensive line to score the opening try after the ball was shifted towards the left edge. Bernard Gregorius denied the Knights back to back tries thanks to an unbelievable try-saving tackle on Honeti Tuha, before Joel Reddy immediately scored up the other end after a perfect tap on by Olive. The Bears received a penalty in the 13th minute after Brown was put in a dangerous position, before Nicholls ran the ball through a hole off the back of the penalty to give the Bears a 10-4 lead. The Knights kick pressure was ruthless, with Nicholls being illegally hit late and high on two occasions in as many minutes. Daryl Millard once again turned field position into points for the Bears after shaping to pass to his outside men, but instead running the ball himself and using raw power to increase their lead to 16-4. Latrell Schaumkel matched Reddy’s effort from earlier with an outstanding try saving tackle, again on Tuha who simply could not seem to find the try line. Nicholls almost scored his second try but dropped it over the line, before Musgrove was sent to the sin bin for constant ill discipline. The Bears immediately took advantage of the extra man, as Schaumkel charged onto a ball at full pace and danced his way through the defence to score. The Knights finally hit back just three minutes out from halftime after a wonderful flick pass from Pat Mata-utia found Kerrod Holland who went over untouched. Crichton scored the try of the afternoon just four minutes into the second half after he bumped off three defenders in his 20-metre raid to the try line to score under the posts. Reddy made it back to back tries for the Bears after he received a pass from Millard and evaded various Knights defenders to score his second try of the day. Olive increased the Bears lead to 38-8 in the 58th minute after he shaped to flick pass to Reddy but instead went himself and showed incredible power to get across the line. The Knights hit back five minutes later after Jaelen Feeney went himself to score a simple try, before Brown was sent to the sin bin for back chat when play re-started. Alike the Bears earlier, the Knights immediately took full advantage of the extra man as Tuimavave ran straight at Millard and unloaded to Mata-utia, who planted the ball down with ease. Any hope of another Knights miracle comeback was quashed when Saumamoa charged forward and magnificently offloaded to Reddy, who completed his hatrick in the left corner to make the score 42-20. Some John Olive magic sparked an incredible solo try with five minutes remaining after he picked the ball up from dummy half, ran through a hole and completely burned a Knights cover defender to put the ball down in almost the same position as Reddy did just minutes earlier. Grevsmuhl showed incredible power on the fulltime buzzer to charge through and offload for Jack Gosiewski to score and bring up the half century for the Bears for the first time this season. The Bears incredible run towards the finals continued with this dominant performance over the Knights, despite key players like Cody Walker, Cameron McInnes and Paul Carter being unavailable.
