LOSS 18-32

The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs have defeated the South Sydney Rabbitohs at ANZ Stadium this evening (Friday) by 32-18 in a match played with finals-like intensity in front of 26,503 Members and supporters - the Dogs winning the Special Olympics Cup in the process. The loss on the scoreboard was compounded by the sight of skipper, Greg Inglis, walking up the ANZ Stadium tunnel after the fullback was involved in an awkward looking tackle that resulted in a suspected injury to his right knee – the Test and Origin star hobbling through a set of six before leaving the field. A frenetic opening five minutes saw the Bulldogs dominate field position early with some strong defence coupled with well-weighted strategic kicking. But it would be Souths who would get first meaningful use of the ball after being awarded a penalty that saw them string repeat sets together on the Bulldogs line. While the men in red and green asked plenty of questions of Canterbury’s defence, the Dogs would ultimately survive the onslaught when a wayward pass went over the touch-line. Ten minutes into proceedings, Canterbury opened the scoring when they put Souths on the back-pedal with some quick play the balls, and by the time they reached the 10 metre line, a short-side play eventually saw hooker Damien Cook cross. Trent Hodkinson converted to give the Dogs an early 6-0 lead. Canterbury would extend the lead minutes later when an unmarked Sam Perrett took a beautiful ball cut-out pass from Hodkinson to send the Kiwi international in to score a foot in from touch. Hodkinson’s conversion would give the Bulldogs a 12 point advantage. Souths looked to get on the board when they went back on the attack deep inside Bulldogs territory, but even more momentum from the visitors with the ball in hand saw them score another converted try through Brett Morris – Hodkinson again converting to make it 18-0 with 10 minutes in the opening half remaining. The men in red and green proceeded to camp themselves deep inside the Bulldogs ten metre-line courtesy of a string of penalties and six-again calls that placed immense pressure on the visitors. But the wall of blue and white defence held strong while the Rabbitohs struggled in vain to come up with points. With the first half winding down, the Bulldogs attempted a field-goal, but instead came up with four points after a bizarre chain of events saw the wayward attempt by Hodkinson chased feverishly before being batted back over the dead-ball line for Perrett to score his second. By the end of the half, it would be the Bulldogs who would go to the break with a clear advantage not only in terms of points, but momentum. After the break, the Bulldogs we’re dealt a momentary blow when they lost the services of James Graham under the new concussion rules – the forward returning after 10 minutes. Fifty minutes into the match, the Rabbitohs finally managed to get on the board courtesy of a John Sutton kick down the short-side that was picked up by Bryson Goodwin to score – the try coming after a controversial call against the Bulldogs that saw possession given to Souths. Reynolds converted to narrow the gap to 22-6. But the revival was short-lived, with Curtis Rona defying the touch-line to score millimetres in. Hodkinson’s conversion attempt was waved away, leaving the score at 26-8. Despite the set-back, the Rabbitohs refused to give in, with Alex Johnston finding space down his flank to score. With time running out (15 and a half minutes remaining), Reynolds quickly lined up the side-line conversion and slotted it to make the score 26-12. Thirteen minutes from full-time, Bulldogs replacement Shaun Lane grabbed a try, as Inglis walked up the tunnel with a suspected knee-injury. Hodkinson made no mistake from right in front to bring the score-board to 32-12. The loss of Inglis saw Dylan Walker shift to fullback for the Rabbitohs, while Chris McQueen reverted to the centres to cover. Despite the re-shuffle, the Rabbitohs went on the attack, with Jason Clark picking up his second try in two weeks when the Souths Junior jumped out from dummy-half to score. Reynolds’ conversion made it 32-18 to round out the match.

After results across the weekend Souths have qualified for the finals.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 24

v Canterbury-Bankstown, 5:30pm

LOSS 24-26

Late Changes - O'Donnell, Rudolf, Syme are out Tangiiti started five-eighth, McCudden prop, Preece lock. Davis and Leuleuai added to the bench.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs NYC side has been pipped at the post by the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs this evening at ANZ Stadium by just two points (26-24). The Rabbitohs led the blue and whites late in the game – aided by two tries to the hard-running Haimona Hiroti, but it would be the Bulldogs who would leave with the two competition points. The Bulldogs got proceedings underway when they scored their first try courtesy of a well-orchestrated second-phase play close to the line – Renouf To’Omaga racing in beside the posts. Hooker, Brad Keighran, converted 15 metres in from touch to give the side an early six-point lead. A penalty to the Rabbitohs eight minutes later gave the home-side an opportunity to attack deep inside the Bulldogs half. The side made full use of the ball, with some adventurous offloading leading to a try to Devon Makoare-Boyce. Jordie Hedges’ conversion attempt from the side-line was struck beautifully off the left boot to equalise at six apiece. The Rabbitohs began to build sustained pressure on the Dogs, and it would more points for the men in red and green, this time the wide-running Haimona Hiroti getting outside the last Bulldogs defender to score. Hedges converted to take the lead by 12-6. Canterbury would get one back just before half-time though when they attacked the short-side and came up trumps when winger, Jayden Okunbor crossed the stripe before bettering the position. Keighran converted to take the teams to the sheds on level footing at 12 apiece. On the resumption, Okunbor grabbed his second of the match when he crossed out wide some ten minutes into the second stanza to make it 16-12. After a hard slog up the middle, the Rabbitohs finally hit back thanks in large part to a booming forty-twenty kick from Aaron Booth. From the very next play, replacement player, Treyvon Leuleuai, crashed over from short-range, Hedges’ conversion re-taking the lead for the red and greens. The Rabbitohs seemed to lift a gear on the back of the points, with the side wasting no time in going straight back on the attack close to the Bulldogs line. Hiroti and his men would benefit when the forward crossed for his second of the evening on the back of a powerful run. Hedges again added the extras to take the score to 24-18. Canterbury weren’t dead and buried though. On their next use of the football, the blue and whites spread the ball to the wing of Marcelo Montoya, who defied the scrambling defence of the Rabbitohs to narrow the gap. Keighran made no mistake from the touch-line to make it a two-point ball-game at 24-22. With two minutes in the match remaining, the Bulldogs went on a long-distance attacking raid that eventually saw fullback, Joshua Bergamin cross for the final try of the match to take the lead and the win by 26-24. The Rabbitohs kicked short and regathered for one last throw of the dice, but the score would stand at 26-24 at full-time in favour of the Bulldogs.

LOSS 16-18

Late Changes - Manuleleua, Millard, Asotasi are out, Saumamoa starts center, C.Walker five-eighth, Brown prop, Crichton second row, Grevsmuhl lock, Mauala and Hyland on the bench.

The North Sydney Bears went down to the Wyong Roos 18-16 in a game that saw a scoreless second half thanks to some inspirational defensive efforts from both sides. The Roos flew out of the blocks early to an 18-0 lead after just 15 minutes, before the Bears clawed back with 16 unanswered points just before halftime. Heavy and constant rain caused poor ball control by both sides for the entire 80 minutes, in a match that was separated only by a Tyler Cornish conversion. The two sides had polarizing opening sets to the game, with a Leivaha Pulu try coming off the back of a Cody Walker bomb that went out on the full. Pulu was put over by a lovely Cornish short ball, which meant the Roos were up 6-0 inside the opening two minutes. Scott Sorensen was standing in an offside position at marker in the seventh minute, and therefore did not make a play at Matt McIlwrick, who picked the ball up from dummy half and ran 50 metres to score the Roos second try. The Bears knocked the ball on coming out of trouble just moments later, which immediately invited the Roos back onto the attack. Willie Manu thought he had a try after Cornish threw him an inside ball off the scrum as he crashed over, but the pass was ruled to have gone forward. The Bears were losing the battle of field position at this stage of the game, and giving away back-to-back penalties certainly did not help their cause. Cornish grubbered into the in-goal area in the 15th minute and showed tremendous speed to win the race and score off his own kick to increase the Roos lead to 18-0. Angus Crichton made a huge run towards the goal posts and was pulled down just short of the line, before he dropped the ball in the act of scoring just five minutes later. The Roos immediately found themselves back on the attack after the Crichton mistake and received a penalty in goal-kicking range. They opted for the two points, but Cornish missed to the right. The Bears finally opened their account in the 28th minute when Cody Walker dummied to the left and burst through a hole to decrease the deficit to 18-6. Suddenly, the Bears were back in the contest after an incredible Ed Murphy try of the kickoff set that included some great work from Darren Nicholls and Nathan Brown. It started with Nicholls breaking through the line and brushing off various defenders, before passing to Brown, who charged up field and threw an unbelievable offload for Murphy to plant the ball down in the corner. Nicholls slotted the important conversion. Walker passed for John Olive to score for the Bears two minutes out from halftime, which came off the back of a Matt Hyland forced dropout out from dummy half. Nicholls was unable to convert the try, which meant the Roos led 18-16 at halftime. An incredibly powerful run by Abraham Papalii and a tidy kick to the corner by Walker began the second half for both sides, however errors began to creep in due to the rain and slippery surface. The Roos threw everything at the visitors from the 52nd to the 63rd minute, but the Bears incredible goal line defence withstood the pressure. Another incredible Walker kick to the corner followed by a strong Olive tackle from marker allowed the Bears to go on the attack immediately afterwards, however this time it was the Roos defence that was far too strong. Both sides had try-scoring opportunities in the final 15 minutes of the match, but failed to convert – which meant the fulltime score mirrored the halftime score of 18-16 to the Roos. But after results over the weekend the Bears have quailified for the finals.
