2016 Holden Cup Train-On Squad
New Rabbitohs NYC Coach, David Penna, has settled into his role at the helm of the under 20s at Redfern, and is now looking forward to a bright 2016. As a player, Penna played 56 first grade games for South Sydney between 1994 and 1997, and now after being part of the coaching staff at the Sea Eagles for the past ten seasons, returns to the Red and Green of South Sydney. Penna now assists the Rabbitohs first grade team working under Head Coach Michael Maguire and current NRL Assistant Coaches Kurt Wrigley and Wayne Collins, as well as alongside North Sydney Bears NSW Cup Coach Ben Gardiner. The sense of nostalgia of being back home in the red and green isn’t lost on the former first grader. “It’s great to be back around Redfern,” Penna explained. “It was a very different place the last time I was here as a player back then – things have obviously changed a lot, but the mateship and atmosphere is really positive. “I was fortunate enough to play here for a number of years, and managed to win some pre-season competitions and the like, so I feel very connected to this place and it’s great to be back. “We have a fantastic coaching team here – one that I really wanted to be a part of and be able to contribute to.” Penna will be looking to develop the Rabbitohs Under 20s side during the course of his first pre-season at the Club, with the improvement of all his budding players the key priority. “It’s been a really positive pre-season so far,” said Penna of his time behind the clip-board so far. “We have an extended squad of around 40 players at the moment, and everyone’s putting the work in to be the best that they can be. “At the end of the day, that’s the goal of this team – to improve and develop as many of our boys into top-line players as we possibly can.”
