WIN 42-10

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gotten their 2016 NRL campaign off to a flying start by demolishing the Sydney Roosters 42-10 this afternoon (Sunday) at Allianz Stadium. In a match that saw among other things, a monumental defensive effort from the Red and Greens, some brilliant tries, and the return of Sam Burgess to the NRL, Souths applied the blowtorch to the Tricolours in hot conditions to claim their first win of the year. A string of penalties in favour of the Rabbitohs saw the men in Red and Green in prime attacking position early, with Cameron McInnes striking from dummy half inside the first five minutes in sneaky fashion. The try was referred to the bunker for a possible knock on, but video officials were satisfied with the grounding. Reynolds added the extras to give the Rabbitohs a 6-0 lead. A brilliantly weighted kick into the in-goal by Adam Reynolds saw Blake Ferguson caught in-goal to force a line-drop out. The result would prove beneficial for Souths a few plays later when Cody Walker threw a cut-out pass to winger, Aaron Gray who in turn scored just inside touch. Reynolds was unable to convert, leaving the score at 10-0. But while the conversion attempt was unsuccessful, Rabbitohs back-rower Paul Carter made amends by scoring a brilliant try off the boot off Reynolds – the halfback hoisting it before Carter brilliantly took the ball to plant over the line. Reynolds added the extras to make the score 16-0 by the drinks break. While the drinks break could have served to halt South Sydney’s momentum, it served to do the exact opposite when McInnes wrapped around Dave Tyrrell, before Adam Reynolds kicked into the corner of Alex Johnston who scored unmarked and untouched. Reynolds was unable to convert with the sun in his eyes leaving the score at 20-0 with 16 minutes in the first half remaining. With the Roosters visibly fading, Reynolds then seized the opportunity to take on the line himself, and after keeping the ball alive with some classy weaving, the Souths Junior passed on to Greg Inglis who in turn stepped through the lagging defence to score a classic try. Reynolds added the extras to take the score to 26-0. The Tricolours got their first real attacking opportunity five minutes from half-time when they threw everything they had at the Rabbitohs, only to be denied by some brilliant defence on Shaun Kenny-Dowall – the Roosters centre held up in-goal brilliantly by Souths’ outside backs. Kenny-Dowall would be denied for a second time just moments later, and with the first half winding down, the home-side would receive a number of repeat sets on the try-line courtesy of some Rabbitohs ill-discipline. But the Red and Greens would defend superbly to go to the break leading 26-0. Nine minutes after the break, Kyle Turner hit a short-ball at speed to score adjacent to the posts, and with Reynolds’ conversion, the Rabbitohs found themselves ahead by 32-0. It took some 65 minutes, but the Roosters finally got over the line through debutant Joe Burgess, who raced over on the wing to open his club’s account for the season. Latrell Mitchell converted to make it 32-6. Following the Roosters’ try, Reynolds was forced to leave the field and go up the tunnel clutching his jaw after making a tackle, and his absence opened an opportunity for Cody Walker to step up into the halfback role. The debutant made his presence felt instantly – a grubber kick being regathered by Turner who in turn passed it on to Bryson Goodwin who scored. Goodwin added the extras to make it 38-6. Following the drinks break, the Roosters would respond again through Burgess albeit after a questionable pass in centre-field that led to the opportunity to narrow the gap to 38-10. With nine minutes left on the clock, Hymel Hunt showed the type of determination his team had displayed all afternoon to overcome the Roosters’ defence to plant the ball down out wide for his first try in Souths colours, taking the score out to 42-10 to round out the match.

In another first today, Souths players all warmed up wearing a training shirt with their First Grade player number on the back.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 1

v Sydney Roosters, 1:45pm

LOSS 20-40

Late Changes - Hamlin and Reddy have dropped off the bench.

The Rabbitohs NYC (under 20s) side has gone down to the Sydney Roosters in Round 1 of the competition this afternoon at Allianz Stadium by 40-20 in a see-sawing affair. In their first Premiership hit-out of the 2016 season, the David Penna-coached Souths side showed plenty of promise despite the hot conditions and the final result on the score-board. The Rabbitohs endured an early set-back inside the first seven minutes of play, when centre Damon Goolagong left the field after falling awkwardly in a tackle, reducing the men in Red and Green to 16 men. Just three minutes after the set-back, the Roosters would score through a centre of their own in the form of Kiah Cooper, who powered his way over out wide to open the scoring for the afternoon. Fullback, Jake Steadman added the extras to make it 6-0 in favour of the Tricolours. But the Rabbitohs would hit back shortly afterwards when Liam Coleman put a perfectly-timed kick toward the wing of Josh Ellison, who plucked the ball out of the air on the fly to score a brilliant try. The subsequent unsuccessful conversion attempt left the Rabbitohs trailing by two points at 6-4. The Roosters’ Ryan King would be next to score though when he raced over to score in an almost identical position to Cooper to extend the lead – Steadman making it 12-4 with his conversion. The ensuing kick-off would see the Rabbitohs put the ball over the dead-ball line on the bounce for the second time in the match, giving the side possession in good field position immediately following the try. Two repeat sets to the Rabbitohs on the back of two errors from the Roosters would ultimately aid the cause of the Red and Green’s – Brock Gray eventually crashing over from short-range to again reduce the deficit to two points with Chad O’Donnell’s conversion. But the pendulum was about to swing in Souths’ favour, with front-rower Toby Rudolf stepping his way through the Roosters defence inside the 40 metre line before passing back on the inside to O’Donnell who scored right next to the posts. The five-eighth would add the extras again, leaving the Rabbitohs ahead for the first time in the match by a 16-12 score-line. With the first half winding down, the Roosters would re-take the lead when Luke Chalker overcame the defence of the Rabbitohs right under the sticks to score – Steadman’s conversion taking the Roosters into the break leading 18-16. South Sydney struck just eight minutes into the second stanza when Tevita Cottrell reached out to plant the ball over the line out wide to re-take the lead at 20-18. An arm-wrestle ensued, with the Roosters ultimately gaining an advantage following a penalty against the Rabbitohs in prime attacking position – winger Bernard Lewis coming away with a try for the Roosters to lead 22-20 with 20 minutes on the clock remaining. Steadman would then add a try to his points tally for the afternoon after a passage of play that saw the Roosters keep the ball alive for a number of phases – Steadman converting his own try to make it 28-20. With time against the men in Red and Green, the Tricolours began to tighten their grip on the match by taking advantage of a string of opportunities that saw them march up-field. Five-eighth Connor Watson added his name to the score-sheet before Steadman added the extras to take the score to 34-20. Jarred Anderson rounded out the scoring for the Tricolours when the replacement scored a try of his own a minute before the siren to make the final score 40-20.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership Round 1

v Newcastle, Kurri Kurri Sports Ground, Sun Mar 6 3:00pm

WIN 28-12

Late Changes - Abbas Miski has replaced Dane Neilson. Final line up -

North Sydney Bears put a nightmare first half behind them to defeat Newcastle Knights 28-12 at Kurri Kurri Sports Ground over the weekend. Blistering hot conditions made life difficult for both teams, but it was a happy homecoming of sorts for Eli Levido who played all his junior footy up the road at Cessnock. It was the Bears who created the first chance with a nice cross kick, which hit the posts. Luckily for the Knights they had numbers back in time. Jake Mamo opened the scoring running onto a nice pass from Danny Kerr, after Kerr did a little show and go to create the try. Bryce Donavan had a difficult conversion into a strong breeze that picked up all of a sudden. Newcastle found themselves in good field-position shortly after the Bears kicked out on the full, but were unable to take advantage. North Sydney were defending well in the sweltering heat, but could not hold out for much longer. Just after 20 minutes of play, Newcastle had their second try thanks to a nice back-line movement for Ken Tofilau to cross in the right side corner. Donavan could not convert on the opposite side and the score remained 8-0. Although the score was well in favour of the Knights, Norths just needed some quality ball. A repeat six helped their cause, but they come up empty handed. Levido’s kicking game was asking questions of the Knights backs, but Mamo and his teammates had all the answers. The defence was brutal at times with Jacob Gagai putting a good hit on Norths front rower Jokatama Dokinavalu, and Mao Uta showed he could match it with a ball and all special. Two minutes out from half time, Newcastle extended their lead with winger Tofilau crossing for his second try of the afternoon. Again the conversion was unsuccessful and the Knights lead 12-0. The Knights almost had another from the restart with Bradie Smith creating a half chance, but the ball was knocked on in the next play. There was no more action in the first half and the Knights went into the sheds leading 12-0. The second half got underway and it was the Bears who began the better. Norths hooker Brad Dietz made a break but the Knights defence shut the support down. The Bears had opportunities camped inside the Knights 20 but came up empty handed on several occasions until Bernard Gregorius was on the end of a lovely flick pass from Ed Murphy. The Bears first try of the day came from plenty of ball but much deserved. Levido added the extras with a great kick from the right sideline to make the score 12-6. The heat was becoming a factor for both sides and when North’s hooker Dietz was injured in a tackle it gave both sides a chance to catch their breath. Just after an hour gone in the match, North’s got their second try of the day with Levido placing a wobbly grubber-kick into the in-goal and Michael Oldfield snatched the ball from the grasp of two Knights players to score next to the right upright. Levido added the extras to lock the score up at 12 all. Norths then hit the lead almost instantly with Michael Oldfield making a break, shrugging off several defenders to run 40 metres to score next to the uprights. Levido made it three from three to give the Bears the lead 18-12 with 15 to go. The Knights were out on their feet. It was a reversal of the first half with the Bears starving the Knights of possession. The game was all over when Bears captain Ed Murphy used his strength to outmuscle the Knights defence to the try line. Another good conversion for Levido gave Norths an unbeatable 24-12 lead. Right on full-time Murphy scored his second try of the game to cap off a great come from behind victory for North Sydney Bears, running out winners 28-12.

NSWRL U18 SG Ball Cup Round 4

v Manly-Warringah, Brookvale Oval, Sat Mar 5 2:00pm

DRAW 26-26

In the SG Ball, the Matt King coached Rabbitohs matched the Sea Eagles point for point as they scored five tries and three goals to mirror Manly’s own score-card in a 26 all result. The result means that the Club’s SG Ball side remains undefeated so far in 2016, with three wins and a draw. But for Coach King, the result highlights the fact that more work needs to be done – the former Rabbitoh stressing the need to live up to the team’s own high standards. “I think we’d all agree that we didn’t quite play to our standards and that put us under pressure,” said King. “Because of that, we got into a dog-fight and eventually had to settle for a draw. We showed glimpses of what we’re capable of as a team, but we need to be able to show that for the full 70 minutes.
