WIN 48-6
South Sydney have scored their second win of the 2016 season after running riot over the Newcastle Knights by 48-6 in the Club’s return home to ANZ Stadium tonight (Saturday). A hat-trick of tries to winger Aaron Gray, and doubles to Alex Johnston and Bryson Goodwin capped off a relentless effort that saw the men in Red and Green rack up their second consecutive big score following their Round 1 win over the Roosters. Just three minutes in, the Rabbitohs asserted their authority when Luke Keary put up a final tackle kick into the Knights in-goal, with Bryson Goodwin leaping to score next to the posts. Goodwin converted his own try to give the home-side an early 6-0 lead. The Rabbitohs almost backed up the effort off the very next set when the team went virtually 100m to come within a whisker of scoring through Inglis – the skipper unable to handle the loose-pass on the ground. But Souths fans needn’t have worried, for from the next set, a wrap-around from Cameron McInnes that would eventually swing out to Aaron Gray would result in a four-pointer to the Souths Junior – Gray leaping into the corner to plant the ball down. Goodwin’s touch-line conversion attempt was waved away, leaving the score at 10-0 in favour of the Rabbitohs. While the Rabbitohs dominating field-position, the Knights looked unlikely to score inside the first 20 minutes, until an error from the home-side deep in their own side of half-way invited Newcastle to chance their hand. Mercifully, a suspected try to Akuila Uate on the back of the error was denied by the Bunker for an obstruction, leaving the Knights blowing up and the score at 10-0. The penalty to Souths would march the Rabbitohs up-field and eventually result in Gray scoring his second in almost identical fashion to his first effort, taking the score to 14-0 – Goodwin unable to add the extras. Souths were about to provide a magical memory for those in attendance, when Sam Burgess took a ball before hitting and spinning, passing on to Paul Carter who in turn offloaded to Keary who raced the remaining 30 metres to score a brilliant try. Goodwin added the extras to make it 20-0 with 16 minutes in the first half remaining. Gray would then pick up a hat-trick with four minutes left – Souths going from one side of the field to the other with some bullet passing that caught the Knights short on their right hand side for the third time in the match. Goodwin was again unsuccessful with the conversion taking the teams to the break with Souths leading by a whopping 24-0. On the resumption, despite some ill-discipline from the Rabbitohs, some brutal Hymel Hunt defence saw the side turn defence into attack, with Alex Johnston crossing in the corner to extend Souths’ lead further. Goodwin landed the conversion from the sideline to make it 30-0. Johnston would back up the effort mere moments later when he put on a vicious step and fend before racing 30 odd metres to score his second try of the afternoon. Goodwin then made it two sideline conversions in a row to make it 36-0. Hymel Hunt was then denied a try after his four-pointer was sent to the Bunker for review – match officials finding that Sam Burgess had obstructed the defence. But Goodwin had no such dramas when he overpowered the Newcastle defence to come up with his second four-pointer of the night before converting it from the sideline. Newcastle celebrated briefly after they were certain that replacement forward Danny Levi had scored. But the Bunker disagreed, and just a couple of plays later Cameron McInnes and the Bunker again denied the Knights – highlighting South Sydney’s incredible defence. Hymel Hunt would then provide some extra sting to the Newcastle loss when he steamed onto a perfectly timed and weighted Cody Walker bomb to score a brilliant try. Goodwin converted to make it 48-0. With two minutes of the match remaining, Knights winger Nathan Ross grabbed a consolation try by getting outside Greg Inglis on the wing to finally get on the score board.

WIN 28-14
Late Changes - Ellison and Saunders were out. David Wright started center, Neihana Walters wing, Haimona Hiroti second row and Lillis on the bench.
The South Sydney Rabbitohs NYC side have grabbed their first win of the 2016 season, downing the Newcastle Knights by 28-14 at ANZ Stadium in sweltering conditions. While the first half saw the lead change a number of times, the Rabbitohs would outmuscle the Newcastle outfit in the second half by taking advantage of a number of opportunities to score. Winger Tom Perrin helped his side to victory with two tries to his name. Perrin opened the scoring for the home-side when he raced into the corner, defying the Knights defence in fine style to pick up four points. Chad O’Donnell added the extras from the touch-line to make it 6-0 in favour of the Rabbitohs. Not long afterwards, a Knights indiscretion within kicking distance saw O’Donnell seize the opportunity to kick his team an extra two points ahead to 8-0. The decision to opt for the points would be vindicated 15 minutes from the half-time break, when Knights player Sione Mata’utia crossed to narrow the gap to 8-4. The Knights had other ideas though, with Jack Meaney crossing out wide to equalise, with Brock Lamb taking the lead from the Rabbitohs for the Novocastrians with his pin-point conversion, making the score 10-8. But Perrin would have none of it – the fleet-footed winger again crossing in the corner after showing some brilliant footwork to outsmart the last Knights defenders out wide to make it 12-10 in favour of the Rabbitohs seven minutes from the break. The Knights would go straight back on the attack when they came close to the Rabbitohs try-line. After a string of promising raids, it would be centre Cory Denniss who would cross out wide to make it a two-point ball-game at half-time with Souths leading 14-12. A second-half arm-wrestle ensued, with both teams bombing opportunities to post points, but it would be the Rabbitohs who would be first to cross through cheeky hooker, Maia Sands. O’Donnell added the extras to take the score out to 18-14 in Souths’ favour. The Rabbitohs would then go on to tighten their grip on the match when Tevita Cottrell danced his way through the Knights’ defensive line before Rory Lillis also crossed to make the final score 28-14.

LOST 10-42
Late Changes - Neilson is out, Miski starts in the centers.
Penrith put in a dominant performance to run out convincing winners 42-10 over North Sydney during the weekend at Pepper Stadium. A powerhouse performance from Penrith’s pack led by Leilani Latu, Moses Leota and Andy Saunders enabled the likes of Will Smith, Te Maire Martin, Sam Clune and Zach Dockar Clay to take control in a game where the Panthers scored seven tries to two. Penrith’s line up had a vastly different feel to it with the big inclusions of Smith, James Fisher-Harris and Latu coming back into the side while North Sydney Bears were weakened with the late withdrawal of experienced centre, Dane Nielsen. Early errors and ill-discipline from the Bears enabled the Panthers to score with Sam Clune instrumental, scoring the first and setting up Malakai Watene-Zelezniak for his try to give Penrith a 10-0 lead in even time. As hard as the Bears tried, they weren’t able to penetrate the Penrith defensive line despite enjoying the better of possession midway through the half. Penrith made North Sydney pay with Sam Clune’s second try with 13 minutes remaining to half time after some strong lead up work from centre, Corey Harawira-Naera and back-rower Tupou Sopoaga. A barnstorming 35m try to prop Andy Saunders laid on by hooker and captain, Zach Dockar-Clay and a Josh Hall penalty after the siren saw Penrith go into half-time in a commanding position leading 24-0. Penrith started the same way they did in the first when Saunders barged over from close range to score his second try before North Sydney with some possession finally going their way, scored back to back tries with a double to winger Bernard Gregorius midway through the second half to trail 30-10. However the Panthers regained their composure to score two late tries through Leilani Latu and Will Smith against a tiring Bears defensive line playing in mid-30 degree heat to run out comfortable winners 42-10.

NSWRL U18 SG Ball Cup Round 5
v Newcastle, Cessnock Sports Ground, Sat Mar 12 1:30pm
LOSS 22-42
South Sydney’s junior rep sides – SG Ball (under 18s), and Harold Matthews (under 16s) – were both downed by Newcastle over the weekend in Round 5 of their respective competitions at Cessnock Sports Ground. Despite both going into the half-time break leading their much fancied opponents, the men in Red and Green were unable to hold on, with the SG Ball eventually going down 42-22. SG Ball centre, Mawene Hiroti, continued his positive run of form for the under 18s side by amassing a 14 point haul of points thanks to his two tries and three goals, while Kurtis Preece and Rangi Paoa Boyce also picked up tries in the match. While disappointed with the loss, SG Ball Coach Matt King believes that his side will learn plenty from the game. “We came up against a really good team and it proved to be a great learning curve for us,” said King. “Irrespective of the score-line, it’s really only a bad game if we don’t learn something from it, and I think that we’ll definitely take plenty out of that game. “Individually we need to improve, but also as a team there’s obviously plenty that we can work on to fine tune things moving forward. “It’s all about next week against the Dragons now.”
