LOSS 12-42
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down to the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs today (Good Friday) by 42-12 at ANZ Stadium. The Bulldogs would go on a first half rampage that saw the teams go to the break with the blue and whites leading 32-0. But despite going down in the match, Souths produced an improved second half in front f the 38,192 strong crowd. The Bulldogs elected to attack the right hand side in the opening three minutes of the match and with their second attempt, Will Hopoate came up trumps by planting his hands on the ball following a kick in-goal. Moses Mbye converted from close range to give them an early 6-0 lead. Mbye would pick up a try of his own when he stepped through the Rabbitohs defence close to the line before crossing it to make the score 10-0 with ten minutes gone. A penalty to Souths inside their own half saw the men in Red and Green get their first real attacking opportunity in good field-position on the back of a kick for touch. Cameron McInnes came close to scoring from acting half as a result, but was held up by the ‘Dogs defence. Canterbury would tighten their grip on the match when a blind-side play saw Josh Morris take a desperate pass to avoid going into touch – Morris running the remaining 20 metres to score. Mbye converted to make it 16-0. But things were about to get worse for the Rabbitohs, with a knock-on on just the second tackle deep in their own side of half-way eventually resulting in a try to Craig Garvey – the hooker dummying one way and running the other to touch down. Mbye made no mistake with the extras from close range to make it 22-0. Two sets of solid defence from the Bulldogs would eventually result in another try to the Canterbury side when Paul Carter lost the ball in-goal, with Morris pouncing on it to grab his second of the afternoon. Mbye converted to make it 28-0. Sam Perrett would be next to score for the Bulldogs, with the winger getting outside the last Rabbitohs defender to score the side’s sixth try of the afternoon – the score reading 32-0 to take the teams to the break. After the break, Cody Walker looked to create an opportunity for Souths when he opted to attack the line on the last tackle – the five-eighth slicing through the defence and looking to pass. Walker got the ball away, but Aaron Gray was unable to hold on to it. A Canterbury mistake on their own 30 would gift the Rabbitohs an opportunity and the side nearly took full advantage when a kick in-goal came within a whisker of scoring – the ‘Dogs batting the ball dead to force a goal-line drop-out and thus another opportunity for Souths. After two repeat-sets, Souths continued to apply pressure, but again came up short – a possible try to Luke Keary was sent to the Bunker and after much deliberation was given a no-try. The Bulldogs would get another try half-way through the second stanza when Kurtis Rona did well to stay in-field – the winger scoring millimetres inside touch to make it 36-0. Souths would finally get over the line some 60 minutes into the match when Hymel Hunt streaked away from the Bulldogs defensive line before drawing and passing to Rabbitohs debutant Michael Oldfield who scored. Damien Cook converted to bring the score to 36-6. Luke Keary then made inroads for the men in Red and Green when he burst through the narrowest of gaps to race 60 metres up-field before being brought down. The ‘Dogs would concede a penalty of the very next set and it would lead to a try for Souths’ Chris Grevsmuhl – the forward taking a short-ball to score. Cook added the extras from out wide to make it 36-12. With eight minutes remaining, Chase Stanley crossed for another try for the Bulldogs to notch up the mark, and with Mbye’s conversion, the score was taken to 42-12 to round out the match.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 4
v Canterbury-Bankstown, 1:45pm
WON 28-10
Late Changes - Souths were 1 to 17. Wright and Widders-Leece dropped off the bench.
A hat-trick of tries to winger, Neihana Walters, has helped South Sydney’s NYC (under 20s) side to a 28-10 victory of the Canterbury-Bankstown-Bulldogs on Good Friday at ANZ Stadium. Walters was in fine form, crossing the line on three occasions courtesy of some brilliant passing and lead-up work from the men inside him. It was the Bulldogs who asserted their authority early in the match, but it wasn’t through the scoring of points, but rather with their powerful defence – the blue and whites consistently driving the Rabbitohs attack backwards. But it wasn’t long before the defence turned into points though, with hooker Connor Jones darting from dummy half to open the scoring from close range for the Canterbury club. Zac Greene converted to give the visitors a 6-0 lead. The Rabbitohs in return asked a number of questions of the Bulldogs’ defence, but were unable to turn the opportunities into points. On the 15 minute mark, the ‘Dogs came within a whisker of scoring again through Isaac Pedro, but the defence of Souths’ outside backs miraculously denied the centre in fine style. After a number of further chances with the ball, the Bulldogs were in again 13 minutes from the break when a towering bomb towards the corner landed in the hands of winger, Marcelo Montoya, who touched down to make the score 10-0. But the Rabbitohs would get one back just before half-time when a series of quick passing out the back-line resulted in an unmarked Neihana Walters strolling over in the corner untouched to take the teams into the sheds with the Bulldogs leading 10-4. The try would be the beginning of a Rabbitoh revival. On the resumption, Souths’ Maia Sands crossed for a four pointer before Chad O’Donnell equalised with his conversion to make it 10 apiece. O’Donnell was about to do better than that though – the five-eighth taking a beautifully-timed inside pass from Siosifa Talakai to streak away to score a converted try under the sticks to take the lead at 16-10. Talakai was only just getting warmed up though, with the big centre busting through the Bulldogs defence before drawing the fullback and passing to Walters who streaked away for his second try of the match. O’Donnell again added the extras with a bending kick to take the score to 22-10 in favour of the Rabbitohs. Walters would grab what a prove a game-clinching hat-trick mere moments later when he took a sensational pass from O’Donnell to score out wide to make it 26-10. A penalty to the Rabbitohs within kicking distance saw O’Donnell then kick his team a further two points ahead to make the final score 28-10.

LOSS 16-18
Late changes - Saumamao and Seijka were out. Gosiewski started second row and Dokoinvalu on the bench.
An explosive opening 15 minutes of the game by Mounties ultimately proved to be the difference, in what was a tough-fought 18-16 victory over the North Sydney Bears. For the Bears, Eli Levido kept on fighting, and his attacking prowess inspired the men in black and red to get so close after a disastrous start. Off the back of an early penalty, Mounties had the first opportunity to post points, but Eddie Aiono knocked on over the line despite an athletic effort off the back of a wonderful right-to-left shift. Keen to take advantage of the field position after the scrambling effort by the Bears, they further cruelled themselves by giving away a questionable obstruction penalty just as they had entered the opposition half. Mounties took full advantage of the penalty, striking first through a barnstorming Barnett, after he was a recipient of a perfect Lachlan Croker pass. A sloppy play the ball by Clayton Williams on the halfway line meant Brad Dietz could not get a handle on the ball, causing the Bears to cough up possession again which gifted Mounties valuable field position. Once again, Mounties took full advantage, as Buttriss skipped out of dummy half in the following set and threw a face-ball for Bateman to crash over next to the left upright to increase the lead to 10-0. While the match began to even out after the incredibly dominant opening 15 minutes by Mounties, the Bears would be rueing their missed opportunities and ill-discipline in the opening half, having only had 43% of the ball and making 18 missed tackles compared to only seven by their opposition. Trailing on the scoreboard, the Bears needed something to re-ignite, and a wonderful big-hit by the little halfback, Eli Levido, on Mitch Barnett in a David versus Goliath mis-match forced an error. Levido backed up his hit by putting in a smart kick into the in-goal on the end of the following set. However, it was to no avail, and the score remained 10-0 until half-time with both teams having close try-scoring opportunities. Buttriss went close for Mounties while Cheyne Whitelaw was held up for the Bears after a barnstorming run towards the posts. Mounties began the second half on the attack almost immediately, and Croker believed he had scored an incredible solo try, but he was ruled to have ran behind Jacob Mayer and they were called up for an obstruction. A Levido show-and-go allowed him to run away, before a Sitiveni Moceidreke grubber kick forced a dropout to allow the Bears to build pressure. Up until the 52nd minute, Mounties had an answer for everything the Bears threw at them, but off the back of the repeat set, Patrice Siolo reached over to score after a North Sydney wrap-around to post their first points of the afternoon. Mounties bounced back 10 minutes later with an incredible athletic effort by Kato Ottio. Maurice Kennedy put in a pinpoint cross-field kick; before Ottio flew in the air and magically reeled the ball in before planting it down to increase their lead 16-6. Immediately, the Bears responded, after Mounties made a crucial error off the kick-off, before Ed Murphy finished off a beautiful scrum play to slide over and score. Levido could not convert which meant the Bears trailed 16-10 with 14 minutes remaining. Whitelaw gave away a crucial penalty with the ball, and while he was clearly distressed at the decision, it should have gifted Mounties two easy points, however Croker missed the seemingly simple shot at goal. Off the 20-metre dropout, the Jack Gosiewski gave away a blocking penalty, which gave Kennedy a kick at goal, and he made no mistake to increase their lead to 18-10. A late try to the Bears kept them optimistic about a late come-from-behind victory, but Mounties defence stuck strong which meant they came away with the important two-points.

NSWRL U16 Matthews Cup Round 7
v South-West Sydney Academy, 12:00pm
WIN 72-0
The Jason Peterson-coached Harold Matthews side sent the Redfern Oval scoreboard into over-drive on Saturday with their 72-0 victory over the South West Sydney Academy of Sport. Kaylib Savage grabbed a hat-trick, while Paul Turner, Maila Chan-Foon, and Harry Larkin all grabbed doubles to help their side to massive victory. Peterson was proud of his team’s efforts to bounce back from a two-point loss to the Dragons from the previous week. “We spoke during the week about what we wanted to do and the boys went out and did just that,” said Peterson. “We lived up to the standards that we’ve set for ourselves and that came about by us executing early on in the game and going on with it. “What was also pleasing was that we went on with the job in the second half. There’s a tendency for teams to drop off a bit after the break, but I’m proud to say that the boys stuck to the game-plan and showed great mental toughness to get on with the job at hand.” Of particular interest was the performance of Peterson’s rotating halves who controlled the game well for the men in Red and Green. “We had a total of four blokes playing in the halves during the course of the game and each one of them stood up,” said Peterson. “They controlled the game well, directed traffic, got us to the end of our sets and showed some good creativity within our structures.”
