WIN 16-12
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have held on to take victory against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles by 16-12 at Brookvale Oval despite a spirited revival from the home-side. After leading 16-0 early in the match, a try to the Sea Eagles was all that was required to spark the maroon and whites into action, with the Rabbitohs having to do a mountain of defence as a result for the rest of the match – the side holding on to win. The Rabbitohs rolled the dice early on the back of some enthusiastic running form the forwards, with Chris Grevsmuhl breaking through before being pulled down, but not before pummelling Brett Stewart in the process. Souths would ultimately finish the set empty handed, but their intentions were made clear. A Sea Eagles drop-ball coupled with a penalty to the Rabbitohs shortly afterwards saw Souths take first points courtesy of Cameron McInnes, who darted sneakily from dummy-half to open the scoring. Cody Walker added the extras from short-range to give the Rabbitohs an early 6-0 lead. McInnes would have another bite though not long afterwards, this time from further away – the hooker again going in search of a try from dummy-half and coming up trumps to notch up the Club’s 35,000th point in Premiership history since 1908. Walker was unable to convert leaving the score at 10-0. Souths seemed to be forcing repeat sets at will, and with the Sea Eagles noticeably tiring inside the first 15 minutes, Walker sliced through when he went on the attack and with his conversion, the Rabbitohs were in a commanding 16-0 lead. Manly would get a glimmer of hope when their ensuing kick-off was allowed to lay on the ground for far too long, giving the home-side enough time to swoop on the Rabbitohs before pushing them back into the in-goal on just the second tackle to force a goal-line drop-out. Souths would defend strongly to hold the Sea Eagles at bay, showing great patience to eventually get a 20 metre restart to release the pressure valve. But a bizarre penalty against the Rabbitohs deep in Manly territory for a bungled Sea Eagles play-the-ball, led to Manly marching up-field with plenty of energy. Dylan Walker would eventually grab a try on the back of the roll-on with Jamie Lyon booting the extras to make the score 16-6 in favour of Souths. The try would spark a revival from the home-side that would see the Rabbitohs pinned onto their own try-line. With just minutes until half-time – whether by design or misfortune – Souths leaked numerous penalties that served to disarm and stagnate Manly’s attack as the Sea Eagles threw everything they had at the men in Red and Green to no avail. The teams would go to the sheds following the explosive first half with Souths leading 16-6. On the resumption, Manly continued to gain strength and despite Souths keeping the home-side out for some 20 minutes, Apisai Koroisau, sliced through from 15 metres out to score under the posts – Lyon adding the extras to make it a four-point ball-game at 16-12 in favour of the Rabbitohs. But that would be all for the scoring, with he Rabbitohs holding on to take the victory despite the Sea Eagles having the ascendency.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 5
v Manly-Warringah, 5:45pm
WON 32-24
Late Changes - Talakai and Rudolf were out. Guler starts prop, Butler(Alatipi) starts center.
South Sydney’s NYC (under 20s) team have grinded out a 32-24 win over the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles tonight at Brookvale Oval. In a match that saw the lead change on a number of occasions, the Rabbitohs defied a blinding start by the Sea Eagles to emerge victorious. Against the run of play, the Sea Eagles grabbed the first points of the game when winger, Mitch Thomas, crossed 10 metres from the posts to give the home side a four-point lead. But the winger was only just getting started – Thomas grabbing two tries in quick succession to make the score 12-0. After the Thomas onslaught, the Rabbitohs would finally cross the stripe when some brilliant drawing and passing from Tom Perrin resulted in Tevita Cottrell racing over to claw back. Chad O’Donnell converted from short range to make it 12-6. With just under 10 minutes remaining in the half, Manly replacement John Walker spun out of a number of Rabbitohs tackles to extend their lead. Hutana Coffin kicked his first conversion of the afternoon to make it 18-6. Sustained pressure from the Rabbitohs in the latter stages of the clash resulted in Perrin hitting the ball at speed close to the line to score a try of his own right behind the posts – O’Donnell added the extras to make it 18-12 going into the break. On the resumption. The Rabbitohs went on the offensive deep inside Manly’s own half with late inclusion, Tarquinn Alatipi, crossing out wide. O’Donnell’s conversion levelled it all up at Brookvale at 18 apiece. The Sea Eagles would retake control of the game mere moments later when fullback Jayden El-Jalkh swan-dived his way into the in-goal to claim four points for his team. Coffin added the extras to make it 24-18. Riley Yates would hit back for the Rabbitohs with 15 minutes in the match remaining – the winger touching down millimetres inside the sideline before Chad O’Donnell kicked the conversion to again equalise proceedings at 24 apiece. Liam Coleman would eventually break the dead-lock when he made a break from the 40 metre line – the halfback streaking away to plant the ball down and re-take the lead for the men in Red and Green. O’Donnell continued his fine form with the boot to make it 30-24. O’Donnell would then seize the opportunity to kick his team two points further ahead on the back of a penalty to take the final score to 32-24 in Souths’ favour.

v Newcastle, TG Milner Field, Sun Apr 2 3:00pm
WIN 24-10
Late Changes - Dokinvalu and Sijeka are out. Talakai starts on the wing Carter at prop. Hughes and Dietz drop back to the bench. Langi and Booth are 18th and 19th men.
North Sydney Bears claimed their third win of the season, defeating a poor Newcastle Knights outfit 24-10 in a brutal encounter at TG Milner Oval. It was an error fuelled game with a great amount of ill-discipline and mistakes from both teams, but it was the outstanding goal-line defence late in the game for North Sydney proving to be the difference after nearly allowing Newcastle back into the game. Tautalatasi Tasi was a shining light for North Sydney, crossing for three tries alongside his strong carries, while Cheyne Whitelaw provided some great defensive efforts whilst also proving to be dominant with the ball in hand. A poor opening five minutes from Newcastle saw North Sydney have a host of opportunities to grab their first try of the afternoon, repeated errors in the Knights’ 20-metre zone saw them fail to capitalise on some valuable field position. A quick burst down the short side saw Tasi claimed North Sydney’s first try of the afternoon, courtesy of some quick hands from fullback Sitiveni Moceidreke allowed him to score in the corner. Eli Levido converted from the sideline to make the score 6-0 after 10 minutes. Some resilient defence from Clayton Williams and Paul Carter continued to put Newcastle under pressure, forcing a great amount of errors in the opening quarter of the game. The Bears were no better however, continuing to drop the ball whilst coming out of trouble. A great amount of ill discipline from Newcastle offered North Sydney some much needed field position as they attempted to grab their second try of the afternoon. Bears back-rower Jack Gosiewski tried to spark his team, putting in a great individual effort barging his way through some poor Newcastle defence, only for the referee to rule that he had knocked the ball on over the line. It took Newcastle 25 minutes to finally crack North Sydney’s line, with a well executed back line movement and great hands by Jaelen Feeney saw Mao Uta cross in the left hand corner drew the game level at 6-all. The Bears soon claimed back the lead after repeated offloads on the Knights’ line eventuated to an outstanding effort from Tasi, which again saw him crash his way over in the corner - somehow putting the ball down just before being tackled into touch by the scrambling Newcastle defence. Levido failed to convert from the sideline, keeping their lead to just 4 points heading into halftime. Newcastle managed to get their revenge just before the end of an error riddled first half from both teams, with Lachlan Fitzgibbon fighting his way over in the corner thanks to some powerful carries from Uiti Baker and Michael Steele. Nothing seemed to change in the early stages of the first half, with an early penalty from Newcastle allowing North Sydney to march down the field straight off the kick off. The Bears took full advantage of the Knights ill-discipline, with a classy backline movement allowed for Siosafa Talakai to earn himself a try and extend their lead to six points just after half time. Some outstanding scrambling goal-line defence from both sides proved to be the difference in the first 20 minutes of the second half, unable to break each other’s line despite both teams earning themselves some valuable field position. North Sydney were soon gifted a penalty 30-metres out from the Knights’ line, with Levido taking full advantage and slotting a penalty goal to extend their lead to eight points after 60 minutes. It didn’t take long for North Sydney to gain a further strangle hold on the game, with a smooth shift from left-to-right and class touch by captain Ed Murphy allowed Tasi to grab his hat-trick for the afternoon, extending the Bears’ lead to two converted tries heading into the final 10 minutes. North Sydney continued with their poor discipline in the ruck, constantly inviting Newcastle back into the game with a host of penalties in the final 10 minutes, with Brad Dietz the first being sent to the bin after giving away repeated penalties. A late penalty goal by Levido added more salt to the wounds of Newcastle, with the Bears finally running out 24-10 winners to claim their third win of the season.

WIN 80-0
The Matt King-coached under 18s ran in a total of 14 tries, with Phoenix Hunt, Dylan O'Connor, and Campbell Graham all posting hat-tricks, while Mawene Hiroti tallied up a personal haul of 32 points courtesy of his two tries and twelve goals. King was pleased with the result and is now completely focused on his side’s final round (Round 9) clash against the Western Sydney Academy of Sport at Redfern Oval this Saturday at the Simply Energy High Performance Centre, Redfern Oval. “It was pleasing to see the boys enjoy their footy over the weekend,” said King. “We’re constantly going after the standards that we set as a team and I think we went a long to achieving those over the weekend. The defence in particular was tremendous – managing to keep any team to nil is an achievement. “It’s all about this coming weekend now at Redfern.” With finals just two weeks away now, the SG Ball side currently sits in fourth position on the competition ladder on 13 points, with Illawarra, Newcastle and Penrith ahead of them, all on 14 points.
