LOSS 10-17

The Rabbitohs have gone down to the Sydney Roosters in Round 6 of the NRL Premiership, by 16-10 at ANZ Stadium, but have taken the Ron Coote Cup having beaten the Bondi Club 42-10 in Round 1. Despite strong showings at the beginning of both halves of the match, the Rabbitohs were unable to capitalise, with Aaron Gray scoring the side’s sole try of the evening in the first half. A territory war inside the first six minutes saw both teams fighting for field-position before the Rabbitohs forced the first repeat-set courtesy of a well-weighted grubber into the in-goal from Luke Keary. The ensuing attacking raid saw the Roosters come up short in defence on their blind-side, with Souths’ Kirisome Auva’a running the ball before being tackled with an unmarked Bryson Goodwin outside him – an opportunity gone begging, with a similar opportunity mere moments later ending with a similar result. But despite the early dominance from the Rabbitohs, it would be the Roosters who would grab first points after a break in mid-field led to Jackson Hastings kicking across-field to an unmarked Daniel Tupou to score in the corner. Hastings’ conversion attempt was waved away leaving the score at 4-0. The pendulum began to swing well and truly in favour of the Tricolours, and that fact would be confirmed when replacement five-eighth, Aiden Guerra ran a brilliant line to score under the posts. Hastings added the extras to make it 10-0 with 13 minutes in the half remaining. The Rabbitohs had their backs to the wall and when Aaron Gray ran on the final tackle before desperately kicking into centre-field, it seemed the Roosters would march up-field through Shaun Kenny-Dowall. But the Roosters winger would throw a misdirected pass that would be picked up by Souths just 15 metres from the line. Mere moments later, a back-line movement saw Hymel Hunt bat on a ball to Aaron Gray who would open the Red and Green account for the evening. Goodwin’s conversion attempt was waved away, leaving the score at 10-4 going into the break. The Rabbitohs came out with renewed enthusiasm in the second stanza, with the men in Red and Green being a little more adventurous with their play in the opening minutes. Cameron McInnes sought to sneak a try from dummy-half inside the first five minutes of the half, but the hooker was deemed to have lost the ball by the Bunker. But in similar fashion to the first half, the early dominance would be overcome by the Roosters when Dylan Napa pounced on the ball in-goal to score his side’s third try of the night despite the efforts of Greg Inglis to ground the pill. Hastings converted to make it 16-4. Both teams traded opportunities, but it was the Roosters who looked in control for much of the second half in both attack and defence – Dylan Napa stinging with his defence while the Rabbitohs attempted in vain to add to their points tally. Hastings would kick a field goal before Cody Walker would eventually grab a second try for the Rabbitohs with just three minutes in the match remaining – Goodwin converting to make the final score 17-10 in favour of the Roosters.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 6

v Sydney Roosters, 5:35pm

LOSS 16-36

Late Changes - O'Donnell, Rudolf and Lillis were out. Leddy starts five-eighth, Brock Gray prop, Saunders on the bench.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down 36-16 to the Sydney Roosters in the NYC (under 20s) this evening at ANZ Stadium, despite a gallant second-half fightback. After the Rabbitohs scored first points, the Roosters hit back with a string of tries to go to the break leading 30-4. A rejuvenated Souths took the field in the second half to score the first two tries while holding the Roosters to just one, but it wouldn’t be enough to chase down the Tricolours. It took just four minutes for the Rabbitohs to cross, with a slick back-line movement resulting in a fast-finishing Riley Yates streaking over in the corner to open the scoring at 4-0. But the Roosters would hit back just two minutes later – signalling an immediate revival – when they got within striking distance for Connor Watson to dive over from short-range. The relatively simple conversion attempt was waved away, leaving the scores locked-up at four apiece inside the first 10 minutes of play. Watson would grab a second try in exactly the same spot just minutes later off the back of a final-tackle kick that would ricochet off the Rabbitohs and back into the five-eighth’s hands. Jake Steadman this time made no mistake with the conversion to make the score 10-4. With just over 16 minutes in the first half remaining and the Roosters attacking the right-hand flank, a number of second phases eventually led to Steadman racing over untouched from short range – setting up a third conversion attempt from an identical spot for the fullback. The conversion was good, making the score 16-4. The right-hand-side onslaught continued when Reuben Porter extended the lead for the Chooks and not long afterwards, Joseph Manu did likewise to make it 24-4. From the ensuing kick-off and with just one minute in the half remaining, Nat Butcher raced straight through the defence to score next to the posts. Steadman converted to take the half-time score to 30-4. On the resumption, the Rabbitohs hardened their resolve and began the second half by scoring first points following a brilliant offload in the in-goal to Maia Sands who scored. Harry Leddy added the extras to make it 30-10. The fightback continued when the Rabbitohs put a kick deep down-field that eventually ended up in the hands of Tom Perrin, who in turn planted the ball down to narrow the gap further. Leddy landed the sideline conversion in fine style to make it 30-16. But the Roosters would fight back, with Connor Watson scoring his third try of the evening by overpowering the Rabbitohs defence close to the line. Steadman converted to make the final score 36-16.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership Round 6

v Warriors, North Sydney Oval, Sun Apr 9 1:00pm

LOSS 12-30

Late Changes - Brock Gray is out, Oldfield starts fullback, Rogers hooker, Seijka prop, Moceidreke, Dietz and Maula on the bench.

The North Sydney Bears went down to the New Zealand Warriors 30-12 at North Sydney Oval on Sunday afternoon. An 8-0 score-line at half-time perfectly represented a tough defensive contest, but the Warriors blew the game out of the park in the early stages of the second half with two quick tries, something the Bears could not recover from. Mason Lino and Ata Hingano worked beautifully off the back of a dominant Warriors’ forward pack, while any chance at a Bears comeback was sparked by two outstanding plays by speedster fullback Michael Oldfield. The Bears goal-line defence was tested early with Hingano and Lino forcing two consecutive dropouts with classy grubbers, but the possession did not convert to points. After a short defensive stint of their own, the Warriors eventually opened the scoring through Matthew Allwood, who reached over the line at full stretch to evade Oldfield and skilfully plant the ball down. The Bears faced immense defensive pressure in the opening 20 minutes and were withstanding successfully, until a classy back-line movement by the Warriors caught them undone, with Ken Maumalo going over untouched to increase their lead to 8-0. A tough second quarter of the game saw no points, with both sides aiming up in defence and forcing too many errors for either coaches liking. Consequently, the score remained 8-0 heading into half-time. Immediately after the break, the Bears made an error that gifted the visitor’s immediate field position. It took another swift back-line movement – this time right-to-left – to again crack the Bears’ defence through Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad. Lino saved his first conversion of the afternoon with the kick from the most difficult spot with the toughest angle that increased the Warriors lead to 14-0. Eli Levido had a kick charged-down by Ligi Sao as the Bears forced their way into the Warriors half, which led to a re-gather and offload to a charging Henare Wells, who broke away with his blistering speed to score. Oldfield displayed a combination of fancy footwork and slick hands to set up the Bears first try, and what was the try of the afternoon. Oldfield darted down the left sideline, danced around the winger, cut-through another and threw an incredible offload for Dane Nielsen to run away and score under the posts. Off the kick-off set, Oldfield was at it again and his individual brilliance had the North Sydney locals on their feet. He showed incredible skill and pace broke through the defensive line once again, eventually passed to Siosifa Talakai, who ran away and gave it off for Brad Dietz to decrease the deficit to 20-12. The comeback looked on, until a Bears pass off the kick-off set found the turf, and Warriors five-eighth Ata Hingano put it on his boot multiple times towards the line, and eventually picked it up to score. Viliami Kaveinga eventually put the final nail in the coffin, completing a dominant Warriors performance in their second consecutive week away from home.

NSWRL U18 SG Ball Cup Round 9

v West Sydney Acedemy, Redfern Oval, Sat Apr 9 1:30pm

WIN 34-20

The South Sydney Rabbitohs SG Ball (under 18s) team has made it through to the competition’s Finals Series having finished the regular season in fourth position. The Matt King-coached 18s finished off their regular season playing schedule by downing the Western Sydney Academy of Sport (WSAS) at Redfern on Saturday by 34-20. Tries to Kobi Hookey, Cam Murray, Rangi-Paoa Boyce, Phoenix Hunt, Henry-Siriah Fuimaono and Mawene Hiroti – who also kicked five goals – was enough to round up the side’s season with seven wins, one draw and one loss. King and his men are now completely focused on what the former Test winger described as a new competition. “It’s a whole new ball-game now,” said King. “That competition’s now over and there’s a new challenge in front of us that starts this week against the best side in the comp (the Knights). “I think we’ve laid a positive platform during the regular season that we’ll now build on. The boys have shown great character and dedication to our processes. We just need to put that into practice this weekend the way we know we can.” Souths’ only loss of the season came in Round five against the Knights at Cessnock.

NSWRL U16 Matthews Cup Round 9

v West Sydney Academy, 12:00pm

WIN 44-10

The Club’s Harold Matthews (under 16s) side wrapped up their season with victory against WSAS by 44-22 – the Jason Peterson-coached side missing out on the Finals by a single point. Indeed their superior points differential (126) could have seen the young-guns finish as high as fourth. A hat-trick to Reihana Leuli plus a double to Raine Dellow, were a feature for the 16s, with tries also going to Paul Turner, Trevor Joseph Sionetali and Jordan Little. Jenson Taumoepeau rounded out proceedings with six goals.
