LOSS 18-44
The North Queensland Cowboys have come away with the points in Round 7 of the NRL in Townsville, downing the Rabbitohs by 44-18. After going to the break trailing 18-6, the Cowboys went on with the job to score a total of eight tries to wrap up the competition points. Sustained pressure in the opening five minutes coupled with a Rabbitohs error, saw the Cowboys draw first blood in the match through Gavin Cooper, who hit the ball at speed close to the line before bettering the position for the conversion. Thurston converted to make it 6-0. But it wouldn’t take long for Souths to hit back – the men in Red and Green showing great patience and enthusiasm to grind forward, eventually resulting in an explosive try to Chris Grevsmuhl. Adam Reynolds converted to equalise the match at six apiece. The match looked to be hotting up, with both sides going in for some heavy contact, but it would be the Cowboys through Thurston who would be next to score just five minutes later. The Test half kicked into the in-goal before chasing and planting it down himself before converting his own try to make it 12-6. An arm-wrestle ensued before a break from Luke Keary saw Reynolds put in a well-weighted, low kick to Aaron Gray’s wing. It became a foot-race for the in-goal with the Cowboys ultimately grounding the ball in desperation. The Rabbitohs however were unable to capitalise on the ensuing repeat set. It would be a penalty against Souths that would lead to North Queensland’s next try – Justin O’Neill benefitting from some brilliant lead-up work from Thurston. Thurston converted to notch up his 1000th point at the Cowboys’ home ground, making the score 18-6 with 11 minutes left in the half. With the game being played at a hurricane pace, it was the Rabbitohs who piled the pressure on in the final three minutes of the first half. But after three repeat-sets, an error of the scrum in prime attacking position would wrap up the half with the teams going to the sheds with the home side leading 18-6. On the resumption, Hymel Hunt was placed on report for an alleged high-shot, and the penalty would lead to a try to Kyle Feldt in the corner. Thurston added the extras from the touch-line to make it 24-6. Souths would throw everything they had at the Cowboys defence after pinning them down in the mid-stages of the second half with Bryson Goodwin coming within millimetres of scoring. But the home-side were about to turn that desperation defence into attack – and the game on its head. A long-range break saw the side go 100 metres to eventually get Ethan Lowe over the line to make it 28-6. The Cowboys would back it up with a try to Antonio Winterstein on the other side of the field mere moments later – Thurston converting to make it 34-6. The floodgates had seemingly opened, with the Cowboys by now buoyed by their momentum. That buoyancy would lead to O’Neill grabbing his second of the night to take the score to 38-6 with 15 minutes in the match remaining. Cowboys prop, Matt Scott, then found himself on report after hitting Inglis high on a kick-return – the Rabbitohs skipper being taken from the field for a mandatory assessment under the game’s concussion rules. The incident would spur on the Rabbitohs, with the men in Red and Green charging up-field before a final-tackle fumble from Thurston in the in-goal allowed Sam Burgess to grab his first try since 2014. Reynolds converted to make it 38-12. But a handling error would again undo the Rabbitohs – the error on their own side of half-way resulting in a try to Michael Morgan. Thurston made no mistake adding the extras to make it 44-12 with seven minutes remaining. A consolation try to Reynolds – who took an intercept 45 metres out would serve to narrow the gap, and with the halfback’s conversion, bring the final score to 44-18.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 7
v North Queensland, 5:35pm
WIN 34-18
Late Changes - Team is 1-17. Lillis and Ellison drop off the bench.
The South Sydney Rabbitohs NYC (Under 20s) side have downed the North Queensland Cowboys by 34-18 in Townsville tonight in a controlled performance in humid conditions. Five tries to the men in Red and Green, plus seven tries to Siosifa Talakai was enough to hand victory to the visitors, getting the road-trip north of the border off to a flying start for the Club. The Cowboys were in with just a few minutes in the match gone, with centre, Bacho Salam racing some 40 metres off the back off a break in centre-field to make it 4-0 in favour of the home side early. Souths would be unperturbed though – the side marching up-field and grinding out some patient attacking raids that would eventually result in Tom Perrin slicing through the Cowboys defence to open Souths’ account. Centre, Siosifa Talakai converted to take the lead 6-4. The Rabbitohs would take advantage of the ascendency by getting back within striking distance to mount yet another raid on the North Queensland line. It would be Maia Sands who would benefit – the dummy-half scooting from dummy-half before overpowering the better efforts of the Cowboys defence to plant the ball down. Talakai added the extras to make it 12-4. Two penalties within kicking distance for the Rabbitohs centre would then result in a further four points for the men in Red and Green, taking the score out to 16-4 in a matter of minutes. The Rabbitohs were showing great composure despite the muggy conditions, resulting in them piling yet more pressure on the home side – pressure that would result in Jamel Hunt bursting through the defence close to the line to score a brilliant try next t the posts. Talakai made no mistake with the boot to make it 22-4. North Queensland would hit back with three minutes in the first half remaining with an unconverted try to Marcus Jensen – the try taking the teams to the break with Souths leading 22-8. On the resumption, the Rabbitohs overcame a blunder from the kick-off to hit back and score through a barnstorming David Wright – the winger bumping off Cowboys defenders to score a strong try in the corner. Talakai missed his first goal of the night, leaving the score at 26-8. The Cowboys would go in again though, with a second try to Jensen plus a conversion to Cody Grills closing the gap to 26-14 with 26 minutes in the match remaining. A penalty-goal to Talakai though would extend the buffer for Souths – the Rabbitohs leading 28-14 with 16 minutes in the match remaining. Joe Besgrove would then build upon the lead with a try that would then be converted by Talakai to take the score to 34-14 with five minutes remaining. A final try to the Cowboys through Cooper Bambling brought the final score to 34-18 to round out the match.

NSWRL U18 SG Ball Cup Major Preliminary Semi Final
(4v1) v Newcastle, St Marys Stadium, Sat Apr 16 2:30pm
LOSS 22-23(Extra Time)
The Matt King-coached Rabbitohs came within a whisker of securing their spot in the Prelim’s a week early on Saturday, only to be pipped in golden-point extra-time by the Minor Premiership-winning Newcastle Knights by 23-22 at St Mary’s. The Rabbitohs lost their only game of the regular season against the Knights in Round 5 at Cessnock by 42-22, but the finals series clash would ultimately prove much closer. King’s men found themselves 16-6 up at half-time only to endure a Knights fightback that would result in the game being locked-up 22 apiece at the end of regulation time. After four minutes of golden-point, a Knights field-goal would end the match and propel the Minor Premiers into the Preliminary Finals. “I’m proud of the effort the boys put in, but unfortunately we couldn’t come away with the win,” said King.
