LOSS 8-30
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down to the Brisbane Broncos in Friday Night Football at Suncorp Stadium tonight by 30-8 in a dog-fight of a match. Despite a solid opening half showing that had the Rabbitohs well in the game just after half-time, the Broncos would pull away by scoring consecutive tries to grind out a victory in front of a crowd of 40,275. The game would see the loss of Hymel Hunt to a pec injury early in the match, while a number of other players spent time on the Suncorp Stadium sideline with the Rabbitohs bench completely bare at one stage in the match. An early penalty to the Broncos gave the home-side an opportunity to have first crack at the Rabbitohs’ line, and Corey Oates would seemingly cross only for the try to be disallowed on the ground of an obstruction. Not long afterwards, Hymel Hunt’s night was cut short when he left the field with an apparent shoulder injury, prompting Kirisome Auva’a to come off the bench and into the centres. But a string of penalties would result in the Broncos drawing first blood with Corey Parker taking a shot at goal from 30 metres out to make it 2-0. The Rabbitohs were defending strongly, with the Broncos throwing everything they had down the left-hand-side of the pitch. Another string of penalties and bounces of the ball in favour of the home side would ultimately gift the Broncos the first try of the night – Kodi Nikorima scoring from the scrum-base after a Rabbitohs knock-on on the 10 metre line. Corey Parker converted to give Brisbane an 8-0 lead. Just two minutes later, a Broncos set-play had Ben Hunt strolling into a gap left by a shooting Rabbitohs defender to extend their lead. Jordan Kahu added the extras from short range to make it 14-0 going into the break. On the resumption, the match took an aggressive turn, with Sam Burgess being warned by the referee on two occasions for separate incidents – the latter incident resulting in a small scuffle. After 51 minutes, the Rabbitohs finally crossed for their first points of the match through Greg Inglis – the skipper benefitting from a set-play and a double-pump from Reynolds to race in and score. The Rabbitohs went up a gear as they looked to attack the Broncos line, but a sickening late shot on Adam Reynolds from Adam Blair with momentum behind the Red and Green’s diffused the opportunity. Reynolds left the field, while Blair was placed on report – Reynolds would return shortly afterwards. Bryson Goodwin kicked two points to narrow the gap to a converted try at 14-8. The Broncos would hit back though when Corey Oates picked up a miraculous try in the corner to make the score 18-8 and would then back up the effort moments later when an early kick down-field sparked a foot-race that would be won by Jordan Kahu. Parker added the extras to make it 24-8. Brisbane looked well in control late in the half, with Parker grabbing a try of his own to all but seal the match at 30-8 with seven minutes remaining. With just two minutes left, the Rabbitohs were denied a consolation try to Damien Cook on the grounds of an obstruction, leaving the match to finish at 30-8.

Late Changes - H.Hiroti is out Hamlin starts second row.
The South Sydney Rabbitohs’ under 20s outfit were humbled 38 points to nil at Suncorp Stadium tonight (Friday). Despite a classy victory over the Cowboys last weekend, the young Rabbitohs could not replicate that performance to get the two competition points for a second week in a row in Queensland. The Broncos led 16-0 at the half time break following tries prop Jai Whitbread, winger David Fauid and halfback Will Brimson. The Broncos picked up where they left off in the second half with tries interchange player Tristan Hope, back rower Lachlan Lanskey, bench player Josh Rudolph and a second to Fauid, with five-eighth Haydyn O’Hara kicking five goals. The young South Sydney side were outclassed on the night and will need to improve before taking on the Wests Tigers next Thursday evening at ANZ Stadium.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership Round 7
v Canterbury, Stadium Australia, Sat Apr 23 12:40pm
WIN 17-16
Late Changes - Talakai, Neilsen, Saumamao were out. Gregorious started at center, Hughes on the wing and Langi on the bench.
The Bears have eventually disposed of a gallant Bulldogs side thanks to dominant displays from Samisoni Langi and Man of the Match Cheyne Whitelaw to keep the Bulldogs winless in 2016. In dreary conditions at ANZ Stadium, it was evident from kick-off that this would be a typical Homebush arm wrestle; both sides earned repeat sets in the opening stages with nicely-timed grubber kicks into the in-goal and were truly in wet-weather mode. In the 14th minute the Bears defence eventually cracked thanks to a fantastic looping cutout ball from Matt Frawley to winger Jarrod McInally. The conversion attempt hit the upright for a 4-nil Bulldogs lead. The Bears struck back in the 27th minute through three of their late inclusions: returning five-eighth Cody Walker sent it wide to his winger Tom Hughes, who came up with a brilliant offload for Bernard Gregorius. With the try converted, North Sydney took a two-point lead and would never look back. The game hit a sour note when Bulldogs centre Reubenn Rennie was put on report for a dangerous shot on Eli Levido, who was forced from the field and unable to return. As the sun began to poke through the clouds over Sydney Olympic Park, it was some Sitiveni Moceidreke brilliance that set up a second four-pointer for the visitors; the fullback put the ball to boot for a short stab kick before toeing it off the ground for a flying Samisoni Langi. Langi got his first try of 2016 before Moceidreke converted, sending North Sydney into the sheds with a 12-4 advantage. Canterbury-Bankstown enjoyed significant field position early in the second stanza but were unable to make the most of it as Brad Abbey sent a cutout pass into touch. They defended their error and after a line break to Dane Chisholm eventually found themselves back in an attacking position. Once again the Bulldogs were offering very little in attack and were unable to come up with points on the Bears’ line. Eventually the Bulldogs hit back through a Raymond Faitala-Mariner line break and while it was a questionable pass to set up Chisholm under the posts, it brought the home side within striking distance of North Sydney. The momentum, however, was short-lived; second-rower Jack Gosiewski muscled his way over for the Bears just three minutes later and with the conversion missed they led 16 points to 10. The miserable weather was starting to get to the players and when Cody Walker slotted a field goal in the 72nd minute for a seven-point lead, they made their intentions to wrap up the game clear. The Bulldogs weren’t going to die wondering and Tyrone Phillips soon chased down a long-range kick to come close to scoring, with Hughes sin-binned for holding the Bulldogs centre down. Abbey and Rennie made the most of their one-man advantage with a fantastic try to Rennie, converted to get Canterbury-Bankstown within a single point with just a minute remaining. The North Sydney defence proved impenetrable, however, eventually handing the Bulldogs another heartbreaking defeat. At full-time the score was 17-16

NSWRL U18 SG Ball Cup Minor Semi Final
(4v5) v Parramatta, Leichhardt Oval Sat Apr 23 2:30pm
WIN 24-8
South Sydney’s SG Ball (under 18s) side is through to the Preliminary Finals following a dominant 24-8 finals victory over the Parramatta Eels at Leichhardt Oval today (Saturday). The Matt King-coached Rabbitohs now find themselves just one game away from the competition’s Grand Final. In a match played in wet and windy conditions – as well as in true Finals-like intensity – King’s men ran in four tries to two, with Dylan O’Connor, Dean Hawkins, Mawene Hiroti and Cam Murray all try-scorers, while Hiroti continued his fine form with the boot by kicking four goals. After a fast and furious first half, the Rabbitohs went to the break leading 10-0 before going on with the job to secure their place in the next stage of the competition. The result follows a steadily improving build-up that began last week when the Rabbitohs were pipped at the post in golden-point extra-time by the Minor Premiership-winning Newcastle Knights. Former Test and Rabbitohs player, King, was proud of his team’s efforts to remain in control of the match despite the difficult conditions. “The boys showed immense composure in the conditions," said King speaking to Rabbitohs.com.au. “Led by Cam Murray, they adapted well and still managed to play the game with finals-intensity to come away with the win. “It’s easy to move away from what you’ve practiced in situations like the ones we faced today, but the boys showed tremendous focus and mental toughness to stick to the plan. “That’s what we’ll now be looking to build on for our next game."
