LOSS 28-29 (Golden Point)
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down to the Gold Coast Titans in a golden-point thriller in Perth by 29-28. But the game wasn’t without controversy. With the game levelled up at 28 apiece and the teams well into the second period of extra time, Adam Reynolds was disallowed a field-goal on the grounds of the Titans defence being obstructed. The disallowed field-goal would set up an opportunity for Gold Coast’s Ash Taylor to slot a field-goal himself mere moments later in the 87th minute, ending the game and providing the visitors with the two competition points. A comedy of errors from both teams would get the first half underway, with both teams taking time to warm up and centre themselves. But it would be the Titans who would capitalise first when Ryan James went over next to the posts. Not long afterwards, Ash Taylor strode over for a try of his own to make it a 12-0 score-line leading into half-time. Souths came out firing on the resumption, with the side making good metres with the ball in hand, but a 40/20 from Taylor just five minutes into the stanza would put the visitors back on the attack, setting up a try for Tyrone Roberts, whose show and go resulted in him going in right under the posts. The try would spark the Rabbitohs into action, and with the side marching themselves up-field thanks to a decisive run from Cody Walker, Bryson Goodwin would reap the benefits when he crossed in front of his home-crowd courtesy of a Luke Keary short-ball. Reynolds converted to narrow the gap. The deficit would become eight points moments later when Dane Nielsen crossed in the 53rd minute, but an error from Sam Burgess early in the ensuing tackle count invited the Titans to attack and Ryan James crashed over for his second try three tackles later. Walker was at it again soon afterwards though when he pounced on a loose ball and breezed past three Titans defenders to score, closely followed by debutant Siosifa Talakai crossing for a try of his own with his very first try in first grade. But the Titans weren’t done. Josh Hoffman would score out wide to make it 28-22 with just two minutes remaining. Cameron McInnes had other ideas though. With the match fast slipping away, the Rabbitohs hooker finished off some brilliant hot potato footy to eventually slide over to bring the home side within two points of the Titans – Reynolds’ pressure conversion sending the game to golden point. However it was not to be for the men in Red and Green, with Taylor taking the final points of the game with his field goal.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 13
v Gold Coast, North Sydney Oval, Sat Jun 4 1:00pm
LOSS 12-14
Late Changes - M.Hiroti, P.Hunt are out. Yates starts on the wing.
The Gold Coast Titans have pipped the Rabbitohs 14-12 in the NYC (under 20s) fixture at a wet and windswept North Sydney Oval this afternoon (Saturday). In an evenly-matched affair played in torrid conditions, two tries to Jamel Hunt weren’t enough for the men in Red and Green, with a penalty-goal ultimately proving the difference. After an evenly-matched opening 15 minutes, it would be the Titans who would go in first through front rower Simione Fatafehi – the big man crashing over from short-range before Brian Kelly added the extras to make it 6-0. But despite the Titans taking the points, it was the Rabbitohs who looked to have all the ascendency, with the side looking likely to score on three separate occasions. With 10 minutes left in the first half, the rain began to come down in bucket-loads, but that didn’t alter the type of expansive style of play on display at the historic ground – if anything, the opposite was the case. The Rabbitohs became more adventurous with a combination of offloads, cut-out passes and kicks all serving to show Souths’ intent. But conditions would again take a turn for the worse with the men in Red and Green applying sustained pressure on the Titans. Just before half-time, the Rabbitohs finally got on the board despite the turn of weather through a barnstorming Jamel Hunt. Chad O’Donnell converted from right in front to take the teams to the sheds at six apiece. On the resumption, the Rabbitohs forced a Titans error on their own line following a strong kick from Liam Coleman, and from the ensuing set, Hunt crashed over for his second of the afternoon in similar fashion to his first. O’Donnell converted to take the lead 12-6. Brian Kelly hit back for the Titans not long afterwards though when the Rabbitohs made a mistake of their own on their try-line – Kelly there to pick up the crumbs before Josh Rogers converted from the side-line to square the ledger again at 12 apiece. A penalty-goal to the Titans’ Josh Rogers with the clock winding down saw the Titans take the lead at 14-12 to round out the match,

v Wyong, North Sydney Oval, Sat Jun 4 3:00pm
LOSS 4-30
Late Changes - Levido is out. Gregorious starts wing, Cottrell center, Rogers half, Saumamao send row. Final Line up -
The Wyong Roos put in a dominant second half performance to down the North Sydney Bears 30-4 in torrential conditions at North Sydney Oval. Both sides completed near the mid-60 per cent mark, struggling to maintain possession thanks to the conditions, but it was North Sydney who struggled the most throughout the contest, failing to get a grasp on the game with their lack of field position and limited try-scoring opportunities. Wyong, meanwhile, controlled the game from the get-go thanks to wonderful performances by Tyler Cornish, Mitch Williams and Abraham Papalii. Wyong had the first opportunity of the afternoon when Williams threaded a grubber in from dummy half, but Zane Tetevano could not ground the ball. After a forced dropout thanks to a smart kick by Omar Slaimankhel, Williams was put another grubber through that deflected off Sitiveni Moceidreke, and with a bit of luck, got a second boot to the ball into the in-goal and planted the ball down himself to score the first try of the match. Wyong dominated field position for most of the first half, but North Sydney had four consecutive repeat sets attacking the Roos’ line. The Roos’ defence held strong, however, and a Moceidreke forward pass with only a minute remaining on the clock let Wyong off the hook, and meaning they led 6-0 at half-time. Jayden Nikorima got ever so close just minutes into the second half, when Cornish put in a perfect grubber, but Latrell Schaumkel swatted the ball out of the would-be try-scorer’s grasp at the last second. The only thing that could have stopped Nikorima in his next chance was a torn hamstring soon after when Moceidreke put a grubber through, it was deflected off a Roos’ player and the young half darted 80 metres up-field to score. As he was about to score the try, he pulled up short and clutched at his hamstring, but still made it to the line. As the rain began to vigorously pelt down, the Roos extended their lead to 18-0 after a left-to-ride mid-field shift created an overlap and allowed Dominic Reardon to score, before Cornish slotted a beautiful conversion from the sideline in tough conditions. The Bears had a sniff of comeback with an unconverted try to Tevita Cottrell in the corner, but Papalii was rewarded for a powerhouse performance with a strong try in the final 10 minutes, increasing the Roos’ lead to 24-4. Cornish kicked an amazing 40/20 in the dying minutes and was nailed by a Bears defender in the process, and scored off the back of that with a show and go on the buzzer to win the game 30-4.
