LOSS 14-30
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down to the Wests Tigers by 30-14 tonight in Friday Night Football this evening at ANZ Stadium. Playing in his 50th first grade game, Alex Johnston grabbed himself a try-scoring double while also setting up a second for Kirisome Auva’a. An early penalty to the Tigers on Souths’ own line invited Wests to have first crack, and after multiple repeat sets, Joshua Addo-Carr came within metres of scoring, only to drop the ball with the line wide open. The Tigers again looked likely to score as the half-way mark of the opening stanza approached, with the side again coming within an inch of scoring through Mitchell Moses only for the five-eighth to knock on. But Moses made no mistake just two minutes later when he crossed out wide to open the scoring for the evening courtesy of a vicious burst of acceleration close to the line to make it six nil. But the Tigers were only getting started. From the very next kick-off, the Tigers took advantage of some slow Rabbitohs defence to slice straight through on the first tackle before racing the length of the field through Tim Simona to score. Moses converted to make it 10-0. With the Tigers looking well in control, the Rabbitohs turned the tables owing to a defensive error from the black and golds, with winger Alex Johnston finishing off a movement to finally cross for Souths’ first try of the evening out wide to make it 10-4. With the first half coming to a close, a Rabbitohs line drop-out set up what would be Wests’ third try of the evening, with the side showing immense ball-handling skills to keep it alive long enough to land in the hands in David Nofoaluma who scored to make it 14-4. The try would send the teams to the sheds with the Tigers leading by 10 points. The Rabbitohs would be next to score, and it would again be Johnston – the Souths Junior’s effort briefly being sent to The Bunker for examination before being awarded to take the scores to 14-8. But the Tigers would hit back almost immediately when Chris Lawrence hit a short-ball at speed close to the line to score, before Kevin Naqaima also added his name to the score-sheet with a try of his own courtesy of some hard-running to make it 22-8. Just two minutes later, Robbie Farah sliced through the Rabbitohs defence to streak some 50 metres to score right next to the posts. Moses added the extras to make it 28-8. But Alex Johnston would again make his mark on the game for the Rabbitohs when an Adam Reynolds kick into the corner-post went over the touch-line, only for the Indigenous All Star and Test player to bat the ball back into the field of play for Auva’a to score. Reynolds converted from the touch-line to make it 28-14. A final penalty-goal to the Tigers would take the final score out to 30-14.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 14
v Wests-Tigers, 5:35pm
LOSS 14-40
Late Changes - O'Donnell is out. Christian Wakeham starts five-eighth.
The Rabbitohs NYC (under 20s) side has gone down to the Wests Tigers by 40-14 at ANZ Stadium this evening in Round 14 of the competition. In a match that saw the Tigers dominate the majority of proceedings, Rabbitohs SG Ball graduate Mawene Hiroti grabbed a try-scoring double in aid of the men in Red and Green. It took just four minutes for the Tigers to assert their authority, with some creativity in centre-field resulting in a try to front-rower Mark McCormack right under the posts. Roman Ioelu added the extras with ease to take an early six-point lead. Late inclusion, Ioelu, would be the next to score half-way through the opening stanza, when the winger got outside the final Rabbitohs defender out-wide to plant the ball down a foot in from touch to make it 10-0 in favour of the Tigers – and the dominance would continue. Mere sets after the Ioelu try, the Tigers were at it again when they sent back-rower Jakob Giles over 15 metres in from touch to advance Wests’ lead. Ioelu made no mistake with the routine conversion attempt to send the score out to 16-0 with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. Things would go from bad to worse for the men in Red and Green when Toa Mata'afa finished off an incredible passage of play that went through a number of sets of hands before the winger planted to the ball down in the far corner. Ioelu again added the extras to make it 22-0 with just under 10 minutes in the half remaining. With their backs to the wall, the men in Red and Green pulled out all the attacking stops to eventually grab a try through Hiroti, who defied some desperate Tigers defence to cross the line. Hiroti would miss the opportunity to convert his own try from the touch-line, leaving the score at 22-4 with five minutes in the half remaining – and that was plenty of time for Souths to post more points. With the aid of a number of two penalties close to the line, replacement forward Joshua Saunders eventually found himself crossing the line before Hiroti converted to take the half-time score to 22-10. On the resumption, Ioelu grabbed his second of the evening when he raced down the sideline before adding the extras to make it 28-10. Fullback, Ryan Papenhuyzen, then scored one of his own to take the score to 34-10 with Ioelu’s conversion. Wests’ scoresheet continued to grow with Mata'afa also grabbing his second with 18 minutes in the match remaining – Ioelu’s conversion taking the score to 40-10. Thirteen minutes from full-time, Hiroti got one back for the Rabbitohs when he also crossed for his second of the night to narrow the gap to 40-14.

A Brad Dietz inspired North Sydney Bears have pulled off an upset victory over the in-form Mounties thanks to a near-perfect first-half performance. Mounties came into the game as undeniably the best team of 2016 so far with just one loss to their name, while the Bears were aiming to bounce back from one of the worst performances in recent memory against Wyong last week. Dietz had an opening 40-minutes to remember, while late-inclusion Devon Makoare-Boyce was also a constant threat with the ball in hand. The added influence of Levido had certainly been missing last week, and his positive presence was once again on show today. A string of penalties led to immediate field position for Mounties, and despite throwing everything at them, the Bears’ line held strong. Mitch Kennedy looked like he was going to score for all money, but an amazing tackle led by Dietz held him up and prevented the try. The next 15 minutes of the game was your classic end-to-end style of football, with both sides happy to complete their sets and get a kick away without mounting any sort of pressure. The Bears finally went on the attack for the first time shortly afterwards, and the two halves in Sitiveni Moceidreke and Eli Levido combined to give Ed Murphy enough room to burst into a small hole and dive over for the opening try of the match. Mounties may not have been able to put points on the board in their previous attacking raid, but once they had another sniff they executed perfectly. Kato Ottio charged onto a ball close to the line, before throwing a nice offload onto the chest of Jarrad Kennedy, who wrestled his way over to reduce the deficit to 6-4. A mistake off the kick-off proved to be terrible for Mounties, as off the ensuing set in front of the posts, Dietz sold a dummy so far to his left that he did a 360 degree spin, before charging through a hole left by the drifting markers to crash over. A ruck-penalty while defending their line the following set cost Mounties another two points, nudging the Bears’ lead out to 10. Dietz got a set going with an amazing run out of trouble, before a fantastic offload by Makoare-Boyce set-up a linebreak deep into Mounties’ half. A few tackles later, thanks to some exciting second-phase play finished off by Moceidreke, the Bears extended their lead to 20-4. Mounties had to be first to score in the second-half, and that’s exactly what they did after a left-to-right shift had Alofi Mataele darting down the sideline to score in the corner. It looked like the Bears were going to be next to score after bursting through the line, but a brilliant effort by Lachlan Croker shut down the opportunity with a brilliant tackle. After a simple mistake made whilst retrieving a kick, the Bears’ were put under immediate pressure, and Mounties had no trouble capitalising on the opportunity thanks to an Eddie Aiono try, who finished off a right-to-left shift. The momentum was well and truly with Mounties, and suddenly, they were back within reach after Glen Buttriss charged through a gap to reduce the deficit to just four, after their fourth consecutive conversion was waved away. The final 10 minutes were nail biting, but the Bears sealed the game after Tulsa Saumamao charged onto a ball and scored under the posts, to give them a 26-16 victory. Rogers was placed on report.
