LOSS 26-28
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have come within a bounce of the ball in pulling off an unbelievable comeback against the Penrith Panthers in front of 14,080 Members and supporters at Pepper Stadium tonight (Friday). Sam Burgess scored two late tries to get the Rabbitohs back in the contest, but a wicked bounce for winger Aaron Gray with the siren sounding in the background thwarted the Rabbitohs’ final efforts to steal the two competition points away from home. Head Coach Michael Maguire shifted his backline around at the kick off with Alex Johnston moving to fullback, Cody Walker into the halves, Ed Murphy into the centres and Aaron Gray to the wing. The Rabbitohs had the home side under pressure early, making plenty of metres up the middle, and in the 11th minute of play the Panthers finally cracked. Luke Keary shifted the play back to the left across the face of the posts, and a short ball turned underneath by Cody Walker saw Kyle Turner beat one defender on his way to a try. Walker converted to give the Rabbitohs an early six-nil lead. The Panthers would strike back five minutes later when the Panthers’ backline strung passes together to get outside the Rabbitohs’ defensive line, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak touching down in the right corner. Nathan Cleary converted from the touchline to level the scores midway through the first half. The Rabbitohs were the next to score through a penalty goal to Cody Walker. Repeated penalties helped piggy-back the Rabbitohs up the field, and an offside penalty against Trent Merrin delivered the Rabbitohs the two points. The Panthers led for the first time in the 31st minute when Bryce Cartwright got an offload away close to the line to put Josh Mansour over in the left corner. Cleary missed the conversion, meaning the Panthers would lead by two points late in the first half. The Rabbitohs went close to re-establishing the lead two minutes short of half time when Cody Walker chased through a John Sutton grubber kick into the in-goal. Watene-Zelezniak appeared to bump Walker off the ball while changing his line, but The Bunker saw it differently and no try, nor penalty, was awarded to South Sydney, taking the scoreline of 10-8 to the Panthers into the break. The Rabbitohs wrested back the lead early in the second half when captain Greg Inglis showed why he is regarded as one of the best centres in the world. The play came back to the left side of the attack in the 45th minute, with Inglis getting early ball. He bamboozled Waqa Blake before putting on a big left foot step past the grasping Cartwright, running the ball around under the posts for the try. Walker converted to give the Rabbitohs a four-point lead. The Rabbitohs maintained the pressure on the Panthers with powerful running from the forwards and plenty of ball movement once in the hands of the backs. Then it was the Panthers’ turn to mount pressure on the men in red and green. Penrith eventually cracked the Rabbitohs’ defensive line following four consecutive sets on the Rabbitohs goal line, with Leilani Latu crashing over between the posts in the 58th minute. Cleary converted from in front to give the home side a two-point advantage heading into the final quarter. Just three minutes later Nathan Cleary would slice through the Rabbitohs again, touching down to the right of the posts. He converted his own try, giving Penrith a 22-14 lead with 18 minutes left on the clock. The video referee denied the Panthers a third second half try when Josh Mansour held Aaron Gray out of the play when trying to diffuse a bomb, giving the Rabbitohs a reprieve from the pressure being mounted by the Panthers. The pressure would eventually produce points for the mountain men, with Chris Grevsmuhl crossing in the 70th minute after another offload from Cartwright. Cleary converted to give the Panthers a 14-point lead with eight minutes left on the clock. The Rabbitohs were not done with yet, with debutant Tautalatasi Tasi going close to scoring in the 73rd minute, and one minute later it would be Sam Burgess who would charge onto a grubber kick in-goal to score. Walker converted reducing the deficit to eight points with six minutes remaining. The Rabbitohs threw caution to the wind in the dying minutes and it paid dividends when Cody Walker broke the line in the 79th minute, putting Sam Burgess away under the posts for his second try of the match. Walker converted taking the scoreline to 28-26 with one minute on the clock. The Rabbitohs powered their way up field and on the final play, Cody Walker saw space out wide for winger Aaron Gray. He kicked over the top of the defence to the right wing and it was only the bounce of the ball that beat Gray to the ball as the Steeden bounced over the touchline, and with the Rabbitohs chance of pulling off a remarkable comeback victory.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 16
v Penrith, 5:35pm
LOSS 8-32
Late Changes - Robinson, McCudden and Davis are out. O'Connor starts fullback, Hamlin and Brock Gray on the bench.
A strong start for the Rabbitohs Under 20s team saw them in position to record a positive result at Pepper Stadium against the Penrith Panthers. However, it proved to be a false dawn as they were run down by the home side in a one-sided affair. Tom Perrin crossed first for the Rabbitohs in the seventh minute of play, crossing from the left wing for a four-pointer. The Panthers struck back 11 minutes later when centre Caleb Aekins dived on a grubber to level the scores. They followed up in the 25th minute with try to Jarome Luai, who converted his own try to take the lead out to 10-4 in favour of the home side. The home side scored again in the 34th minute through Billy Burns, who broke the line three minutes out from the goal line. The conversion was missed, taking the score to 14-4 in favour of the Panthers. The Panthers would add one more try before the break, with halfback Wayde Egan dummying and sliding through to score. Luai converted to give the home side a 16-point advantage at the half time break. The Panthers picked up where they left off in the second half, with big Thomson Tuigimala crashing over in the 45th minute of play. Luai converted from close range to extend the lead to 26-4. Two of the Rabbitohs’ under 18s set up the next try, with Cameron Murray getting outside his opposite number and throwing a perfect flick pass for Campbell Graham on the right wing to score. The Panthers continued their run of dominance with another try to Braidon Burns under the posts to pull the Panthers to a 32-8 lead with 15 minutes left on the clock. However, ill-discipline saw the Panthers go a man down when Cowen Epere was sent to the sin bin for unsportsmanlike conduct. The remaining 15 minutes were uneventful and the game would finish up with the same scoreline.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership Round 15
v Warriors, Mt Smart Stadium No.2, Sat Jun 24 1:00pm(NZT)
LOSS 14-15
Late Changes - Murphy was out, Robinson and Gregorious start in the centers, Saumamoa on the bench.
Mason Lino delivered the clutch play in the last minute to give the Warriors a 15-14 win in their Round 16 Intrust Super Premiership clash against North Sydney at Mount Smart Stadium No 2 today. The scores had been locked up at 6-6, 12-12 and 14-14 during the contest when Lino broke the deadlock with a well-taken field goal to give the Warriors their 10th*win of the season. It lifted them to 24 points and took them back to the top of the table pending the outcome of the clash between Wyong and the Mounties; the Mounties will go back into top spot if they win. The Warriors were back home today after two straight matches on the road, the second last week ending in a disappointing 6-38 loss to Newtown. It was never going to be easy finding a way back into winning form today. Conditions were challenging at best with steady rain falling throughout the day, ensuring roll-the-sleeves-up fare for the forwards with the battle certain to be fought out in the middle of the park. The Warriors were on the board in the opening minutes, Mason Lino scoring after Bears fullback Sitiveni Moceidreke spilled a kick. With Lino converting his own try, the score remained 6-0 deep into the half when North Sydney levelled up from close range through hooker Brad Deitz. Soon after halftime the Bears took the lead for the first time when interchange forward Jokatama Dokinavalu thundered over from 10 metres out to score under the bar for halfback Ekli Levido to convert. The lead was short-lived as the Warriors forced a goal-line dropout from the restart and eventually created a try on their left edge for centre Matt Allwood. Lino converted for 12-12. A high tackle by interchange forward Pat Sipley enabled North Sydney to edge ahead through a Levido penalty before the Bears transgressed at the other end and Lino reciprocated with a penalty to lock the contest up again at 14-14. With 15 minutes to go the Warriors thought they’d made the critical play of the game when fullback Tomas Aoake went over steaming onto an inside pass but the ball was called forward. The setback was exacerbated when the Warriors then conceded a penalty, the Bears setting up at the other end hunting an opportunity to take the lead. They were repelled as the Warriors produced an inspired stint on defence. A field goal play appeared to be the most logical for either side if they could get into position. The Bears did inside the last six minutes, but great pressure from the Warriors saw them spray it wide. With three minutes to play the home side had time to grab victory. First Lino’s nicely-weighted kick forced a goal-line dropout. From the repeat set the Warriors worked themselves into position perfectly, setting up Lino for the one-point play to seal the result.
